When Anna woke up in the morning, she accidentally woke Jem, who was always a light sleeper.
Anna whispered, "Sorry, Jem. I left some white bread for you and Dad."
Jem didn't get up. He sleepily mumbled, "Okay, Anna."
He closed his eyes and went back to sleep.
Today, Anna wore her best dress, a grey-blue one that made her look much more vibrant compared to the smoky grey dress she wore yesterday. She also tied her reddish-brown hair into a centipede braid.
Her father, Evan, was still asleep. Anna bid farewell to her mother Gayle.
This world had mages, and naturally, it had religion. Everyone worshipped the Goddess of Light. Evan and Gayle were devout followers, dedicating at least a third of their monthly savings to the Goddess of Light church in BlueStone.
The specifics of this world were beyond the original Anna's knowledge. She only knew that she was in the Principality of Engari, which was surrounded by other principalities and the independent Goddess of Light Church. The Church sent clergy to various principalities, and BlueStone church was overseen by a priest. From Anna's memories, he was an ordinary middle-aged man.
Anna knew the location of the Earl's mansion. It took her half an hour to get there, but was stopped at the first hurdle.
When she explained that she was there to apply for a job, the guard told her that without a recommendation, she couldn't enter.
Anna remembered Lily's words. Lily did say that without a recommendation, she couldn't get in.
But Anna didn't want to give up so easily. She pleaded with the guard, "Please, let me in. My family is very respectable... Oh, and there's a maid who knows me."
Anna went so far as to borrow Lily's aunt's name, but the guard remained unmoved.
"I know her."
Both Anna and the guard turned to see who it was. The guard immediately beamed, "Brother Shane, what brings you here?"
Anna recognized him—it was the coachman who had driven Parish yesterday!
"Just here to help a relative's child find a job," Shane said naturally, smiling.
Because he often drove for Parish, Shane, though just a coachman, was quite respected. The guard immediately said, "If Brother Shane knows her, then there's no problem!"
"Hahaha, I'll buy you a drink sometime!" Shane laughed heartily. "So, I'll take her in?"
"No problem! I'll be the one treating you, Brother Shane!" the guard laughed in return.
As Anna followed Coachman Shane inside, she felt a bit dazed.
Did she just get in like that?
Wait... does this mean that the demon is still watching her? Anna was startled.
If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
But then she relaxed.
Hadn't she considered this possibility already?
However, she wondered, does the Goddess of Light truly exist in this world? If she sought help at the church, could the priest borrow the Goddess's power to eliminate the demon?
As Anna pondered this, she saw the mansion.
The Earl's mansion was entirely different from Pomegranate Lane where Anna lived. She had felt the difference at the gate, but once inside, the contrast was even more striking. The mansion seemed centuries ahead of Pomegranate Lane.
In any era, those who monopolize the majority of resources always live comfortably.
Unfamiliar with the Earl's mansion, Anna only realized where Shane was taking her, when she heard a familiar voice.
"So, we meet again."
Shane had brought her to the demon!
Anna quickly averted her gaze after one glance.
The demon was still inhabiting Master Parish's body.
But remembering the previous incidents, she felt she shouldn't be too afraid. Hadn't she successfully resisted the demon before? He hadn't harmed her...
This was Rothgar's second day possessing Parish.
According to his original plan, after getting several dozen human women to agree to marry him, he would move to another place, find another handsome playboy, and continue the process. He could win the bet in a few days, far less than six months.
However, yesterday's incident forced him to reconsider his plan.
His assumption that any woman would immediately accept his proposal proved incorrect.
Although his subsequent small experiment with a maid showed that his idea wasn't entirely wrong, this unexpected refuse annoyed him.
Since yesterday, he had been conducting observations and experiments, proving that the human world was as he expected. The woman he encountered yesterday was merely an accident.
And then, Rothgar saw the woman brought to him by his coachman, the one who had caused his initial failure.
So, it wasn't an accident after all.
It could only be said that this "innocent" human woman was actually more cunning than anyone else. Falling in front of his carriage yesterday and refusing him several times were just the beginning.
Rothgar delved into Parish's memories, suppressing his own sinister smile and replacing it with a gentle one. "The girl who made me fall in love at first sight yesterday, have you finally decided to respond to my proposal?"
Of course, he would respond to her "expectations." Otherwise, how could he enjoy the pleasure of torturing her later?
Anna saw Parish's flawless smile and, comparing it to the cold murderous intent on the demon's face, felt her whole body stiffen. She quickly lowered her head.
To Rothgar, this meant Anna was shy.
He was already thinking about how to torment her once she agreed.
With her head down ,avoiding the demon's face, Anna's courage returned. She softly said, "No, Master Parish, I'm just here looking for a job... I want to work in the kitchen."
Yesterday, she had been terrified by the sudden sight of the demon. Today, she was still afraid, but not as much as before. This allowed her to think more clearly and judge the demon's behavior. She found his acting skills rather poor.
Yesterday, he had said he cared about her injury and wanted to take care of her, but he only focused on "proposing" with his words and took no actual action. Today, he said he fell in love with her at first sight, but yesterday he hadn't even asked for her name. He couldn't even call her by her name now!
Even without seeing the demon hidden in Parish's body, no normal girl would be fooled by his clumsy acting.
Hearing Anna's response, Rothgar was slightly surprised but not as shocked as yesterday.
A cunning woman wouldn't give in so easily.
He drew on Parish's memories, showing a disappointed expression and looking at her with sorrow. "Beautiful girl, would you rather work in the kitchen than marry me and become my wife?"
Anna didn't look at "Parish," but she thought his words were overly dramatic and his expression probably just as exaggerated.
"I'm really sorry."
"Parish" sighed and said to Coachman Shane, "Tell the kitchen to keep my beautiful girl."
Shane quickly replied, "Yes, Master!"
Although it seemed unbelievable that the girl had once again rejected the young master, Shane knew that bringing her before the young master was not a mistake.
After Shane led Anna away, Rothgar's face darkened.
She seemed genuinely happy about being able to work in the kitchen... Clearly, she was pleased to have a reason to stay close to him.
He would love to see what she planned to do next.
The more tricks she played and the longer she dragged this out, the more "rewards" he would give her in the future. Hmph, she had better not regret it.
