Ticket Back

The morning sun streaked through the window, casting a warm glow upon my face as I savored the anticipation of the day ahead. The cheerful chirping of birds outside served as a gentle reminder of life beyond the confines of my solitude. With a blend of excitement and nervousness, I rose from bed, knowing that today marked the beginning of a journey I had abandoned five years ago.

"I'm finally heading back to a real classroom!" I thought, practically bounding down the stairs to the living room.

"Jacob, did you get everything ready?" Mom's voice carried a mix of concern and anticipation.

"All set, Mom," I replied between hurried bites of breakfast.

"Dad's right, be careful on your way there," Mom added, her eyes betraying a hint of maternal worry.

"Where are Max and Ethan?" I inquired eagerly, ready to commence the day's adventure.

"They're getting ready," Mom responded with a smile.

"Already? I thought I was quick," I chuckled.

As I began clearing my plate, Dad interjected, "Better hurry up, Ethan's especially antsy today."

"I am not!" Ethan retorted indignantly.

"Come on, Ethan, you know you're always the restless one," I teased.

"Let's keep it friendly, guys. It's Jacob's big day," Max interjected, his voice a calming presence amidst the banter.

Ethan couldn't resist a playful jab, his envy peeking through. "Not fair that you both get to go back to school first."

"We're older, that's why," Max reasoned, his tone gentle yet firm.

I dashed upstairs to complete my preparations, relishing the anticipation of face-to-face interaction with peers after five years of isolation. As I donned my uniform and caught my reflection in the mirror, I couldn't help but marvel. "When was the last time I wore a uniform?" I mused.

Before I could dwell on it further, Ethan barged in, his usual antics in tow. "What's with the staring, ugly?"

"Hey," I protested, shaking my head with a smirk.

"You know what? I'll let that slide today," I said, offering him a lighthearted smile as he darted downstairs. I followed suit.

"Are you ready?" Max asked his demeanor a blend of eagerness and responsibility.

"All set," I confirmed with a nod.

"Then let's go," Max declared, leading the way.

We left the house at early 6 a.m. with our train cards and boarded the earliest train available. My heart raced with excitement, knowing that I was another step closer to going back. How I had forgotten how it felt to be in a classroom.

"This is our stop," declared Max, leading me through the shortcuts he had discovered during his year of commuting. After a bit more walking, we finally reached our destination.

"We're here, Metro Heights High School. You ready?" my brother inquired.

The school loomed large before us, with several smaller buildings scattered around the campus. A multitude of students, all dressed in the same uniform, bustled about.

"As ready as I'll ever be," I stated with determination.

"Well, this is where we split. Have fun looking around, Jacob," said my brother as he walked away.

I took a moment to absorb my surroundings, watching the flurry of activity around me. The sheer number of students amazed me, and a sense of excitement bubbled within me.

"I'm back, school life," I muttered to myself as I gazed up at the imposing main building. The sun shone brightly overhead, and a gentle breeze stirred the air as I started to walk towards the main entrance.
