Chapter 3 - First battle

Chapter 3 - First battle

Their first target was a small caravan entering through the woods, the caravan was heading deeper into the forest and was guarded by two armored guards and a fat man who appeared to be the leader. The two men were equipped with steel spears and wore armor, they didn't seem to be cultivators.

The fat leader Bo, looked around with his eyes narrowed, monitoring his surroundings every few minutes. He was going to get good money after this delivery to the nearby town, enough to let him retire and live out the rest of his life in luxury. He selected only the two of his most trusted men to go with him on this journey, he was overly cautious as taking more men would attract greater attention toward the treasures he was transporting. He had been in the escort business for the last three decades and had gone through several near death experiences and was a sly fox who managed to escape by the hair of his neck each time.

Bo's instincts warned him that they were being watched but they didn't spot anyone except for the occasional wild beast that would be quickly dispatched off by his two guards. Bo's instincts had never failed him before so he quickly signalled his guards to prepare for a fight when they were deep enough in the forest.

The two guards took up their battle formation with one to the right and the other to the left of the caravan while Bo took shelter inside the caravan. There was an eerie silence for a while around them before a shadow shot towards the guard on the left, the guard saw the shadow turn into a woman more beautiful than any he had ever seen before, the sight of the fairy bewitched him for a second, that second were he dropped his guard was enough for Mei to drive a wooden makeshift spear with a 'whoosh' through his exposed neck and out the other side, he plopped to the ground like a puppet with its strings cut off, eyes wide open in shock as blood spurted from his neck.

At the same time that Mei engaged the guard on the left, Wen had dropped down from the tree above onto the guard on the right, pulling the man to the ground by grabbing his head and plunging him face first into the forest floor, the man let out a hoarse groan before fainting.

The two guards went down so easily as they never expected such a sudden and ruthless attack out of nowhere, the element of surprise and knowledge about the enemy that Wen and Mei had by tracking and studying their targets while the guards were oblivious of what awaited them combined to prove fatal.

Mei yanked out the wooden spear from the dead guard, her eyes glowed like that of a predator that just downed it's prey, each kill brought her closer to sating that hunger for vengeance that burned within her. Things were going much better than she had expected, the Otherworlder Wen had agreed to help her as long as she helped him in turn, it was an agreement were both of them had something to gain. As they travelled through the forest, they had grown to trust each other and he grew stronger at a pace that even a pureblooded demon like her grew jealous. He didn't flinch when she had told him that they would need to kill to get into the town safely, any other human would have shown some hesitation, even she had some apprehension when she had learnt for the first time that she would need to kill others during their flight from the North.

As she drew closer to the caravan, the fat man rushed out and began kowtowing and begging for mercy, like a little child caught doing something he wasn't supposed to and thought that weeping and groveling would save him from what was to come. When the man saw the indifferent expression on Mei's face he grimaced before reaching for something in his sleeve, before he could grab it, a foot landed on his head pushing him nose first into the ground with a thud and then a knife-hand chop landed on the top of his head knocking him out, the foot and hand belonged to Wen who had approached the fatty from behind and took action after he sensed the man reach for something in his sleeve.

Fatty Bo woke up screaming in anguish, there was a steel spear driven through his abdomen avoiding his vitals, the monstrosities had crushed his men in the blink of an eye and knocked him out before he could use the secret poison he had on him for emergencies. He saw them interrogating the guard who was knocked out earlier, his limbs were tied up and the woman seemed to enjoy herself as she inflicted cut after cut onto the guard's flesh, one after another like painting a canvas, this went on for several hours until the guard's mutilated body dropped dead surrounded by his own dried up blood, a look of relief on his bloodied face.

Soon it was Bo's turn to be tortured, why were they killing him and his men in such a cruel manner, he could not make sense of it at all. They questioned him about the town, about the various powers that ruled the town and so on, he replied to all their questions the best he could hoping they would end his misery quickly. But the man and woman seemed to enjoy watching as he writhed in agony as blood dripped down his body, the spears firmly driven into the ground immobilising him as he slowly bled to his death.

Wen waited until the fatty died, before pulling the spear out and then proceeded to loot and dismember the three corpses with Mei's help and spreading the chunks in the surrounding area so that the beasts would consume them.

They then moved to check the caravan to find it contained several weapons, the fatty had revealed that he was transporting them to supply a nearby town's Green Wind sect in their conflict against the Boundless Ocean sect. Aside from the weapons they also found some usable attires, rations, gatepasses that belonged to the fatty and a deadly poison powder and it's antidote from the fatty's corpse among their spoils.

The two then disguised themselves to resemble the townsfolk based on the information they had obtained, using Mei's ring's power Wen was able to temporarily hide his remnant soul from being detected if they were to be tested, after destroying all the evidences and making it appear like the caravan was attacked by wild beasts, they left for the town, only taking two ordinary spears from among the caravan's weapons while leaving the rest untouched.
