(Vol 1) 1- Chosen in Death (E)

The last thing she remembered of her life was a short man standing by her bed holding her hand. He wore strange clothing that could have been a fantasy cosplay but his sad smile was comforting. She found herself watching him as things slowly went black. There was a sharp rise in panic in those last few seconds and her mind screamed that she wasn't ready; but then she died. A blackness seemed to swallow her and then there was stillness and silence. She was oddly aware of a peaceful nothing that was somehow in a space between, between what... she wasn't sure and then there was a pulling sensation and then she felt more than heard a popping vibration. A disorienting moment later and she was in a great room filled with mist and candle light as a small orb of light.

A young looking female elf with blue black hair and large black orbs for eyes was standing above and in front of her. An intense pressure held the orb of light in place and she felt rooted to the spot, helpless. The odd looking creature analyzed her with one of her hands and a thoughtful squint. After squinting at the orb for a while the elfin tilted her and tapped the tip of her pointed nose with a finger. With two slender fingers the elfin started picking threads of light bound in her orb and pulled them out. She would look at them and nod seemingly satisfied and toss them to the side. The threads would squirm for a time and then wither away as the light faded.

“You are removing almost everything.” Said a woman with long white hair and almond orbs for eyes. She was watching them with what might have been curiosity from some steps that surrounded a dais. If the woman on the dais stood still she would have looked like a tree with the leaves in strange places. Her leaves were woven together in an intricate way forming a fashionable green dress. Clothing that looked natural on the woman's white bark like skin. Behind the lounging tree woman was a small unadorned throne that sat empty in front of a large window. The stained glass window was large and framed the throne with a depiction of a stylized sun and moon. The window glass wasn't lit from the outside so the orb assumed it was night where every they were. The tree woman shifted so she could watch with her chin resting on her hands and elbows.

“It will be better that she doesn’t have much of an identity for what is about to happen. We don’t need that, we need someone that will leverage your system, little Luna. I had Nim pick us an ambitious person, and an out of the box thinker, but who cares who they were.” Said the elfin girl standing near her orb of light, she was still using her fingers to pull off pieces of them.

As she did the orb could feel memories and parts of herself disappear. Her memories of a loving family were soon in a small bundle of strings of light on the floor. She watched the memories writhe on the floor unable to remember why they were so important. Other strings of light were were disappearing on the floor as well. A few strands of friends and her childhood dog, she didn't miss them and a dog was such a silly thing, considering.

The elfin girl moved closer and her solid black eyes twitched back and forth. She looked at the orb with a fierce expression and then there was a lightning fast snap of her fingers. The orb noticed another piece of her was gone and she watched for a moment as it lingered on the floor. The elfin girl gave her a wide almost menacing smile that showed her teeth.

"Now to add something, a gift from me to you." The elfin girl said as she dangled a mass of black and red fibers for the orb to see. The orb strained and vibrated as the elfin girl crammed the tangle into them. The screen from before flickered back on.

“If Syl understood you better she would be terrified.” Luna said with a little boredom creeping into her voice.

“It’s better Syl doesn’t know me, at least for now. If this plan works she can have her moral fit about what we’ve done to save her later. That girl is too soft and you know it.” Said the black eyed girl. The girl backed away then, her simple night gown swayed with the sudden movement. The orb of light thought that the girl might have been cute if she hadn’t ripped away their identity. “That should do it, give her the system so we can get back before she notices.” She said looking at the woman on the steps of the dais.

“The Ilvante are a real problem and your solution to our problem is to fix it with an Ilvante… what if this doesn’t work?” Luna said as she waved an arm towards the orb. A blank screen flickered on, like a menu screen in a video game, created in the air in front of them. Luna’s complaint hadn't stopped her from giving the [System] to the orb. After a few seconds the blank screen flickered off and the woman turned toward the elfin girl.

“Then we try again, we can always make more… now hurry it along, I want to snuggle with my sister some more before she wakes up. Plus the rest of you have your children... ever wonder who my children are?” The black eyed girl said as she looked over them. Her fingers twitched like she was hoping to find something else she could take from them.

“You are a monster.” Luna said as she stood and walked over to them eyeing her orb of light critically.

“Im a pragmatist. The Ilvante are wonderful, couldn't be a happier mama.” The black eyed girl said and Luna’s eyebrow peaked but the woman didn’t bother responding. She paused and looked at them for a while.

“What if this is too successful, maybe we should have gotten someone with less ambition.” Luna said as she looked at them.

“Hehehehe. Then I’ll give this little one a promotion.” The black eyed girl said as she turned and held the little part that remained of them. Smoke swirled around them as she started speaking again. “We won’t speak again little one, my voice can be dangerous to the living. Learn temple hand speak and invoke me, Sister Sun, and I will help you. Don’t disappoint me.”

“Where do you want to put them?” Luna said while she seemed to consider locations.

“I have a spot in mind, plus it should be funny.” Sister Sun said with a devilish grin.

“I am betting its sadistic…”Luna said her voice sounded far away.

“Ohhh yeah... this is going to be great!” Sister Sun said her voice fading away as her orb of light was flung into darkness.
