Chapter 1417 I Don’t Know What I’d Do Without You

Kisa gave a firm nod. “I got it.”

Kisa was just about to ask Adrien for a ride when he suddenly took on a righteous expression and told her, “Hold up, Kisa. Why don’t you stay here and see if that guy still cares about you? If he comes back for you, it means there’s still hope for you to win his trust. But if he doesn’t, then I can come to your rescue. How does that sound?”

Kisa’s lips curled up in a stiff smile. ‘This man is going to extreme lengths to test Gilbert’s feelings for me. On Kerrona Hill, he went to great lengths to gauge Gilbert’s affection for me. It is as if the more Gilbert and I loved each other, the more excited this man became, almost relishing in the idea of us hurting each other.‘

Kisa fought back a sigh and flashed him a wry grin. “Sure thing, just Uncle Adrien. I mean, this cemetery is a little creepy, don’t you think? And the sun is setting, so if he’s not back by seven I’ll give you a call and you can come pick me up.”

Adrien patted her on the shoulder, his smile warm and reassuring. “No problem, Kisa. I will be there for you, just like I would for my own daughter. You can count on me.”

“Uh–huh,” Kisa nodded with appreciation. “Aww, Uncle Adrien, you are a lifesaver! With Jensen out cold, I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

As soon as the words “I don’t know what I’d do without you” escaped Kisa’s lips, Adrien’s attention drifted away, lost in a sea of memories. He stared at her with a blank expression, and for a split second, she morphed into the woman in his memories. He quickly averted his gaze, burying the resentment and bitterness that threatened to surface.

Kisa, after all, was just a child of that woman and another man, with no connection to him whatsoever. None at all.

Adrien clambered into his car, and it sped away, leaving Kisa behind. She watched it disappear into the distance, her smile fading in tandem. The more Adrien tried to act kindly toward her, the more revulsion she felt toward him.

‘How had I ever thought this man was as kind–hearted as an elder? Perhaps I had placed too much trust in Jensen at the time. Jensen, Jensen… When I return to Calthon, I’ll have to pay him a visit.‘

The winter sky seemed to turn black in a heartbeat, casting a sinister gloom over everything. The sun, which had been perched on the horizon, had vanished, leaving only menacing tree shadows behind. Kisa hugged her knees and perched on the steps of a flight of stairs. A cold wind swept in from behind, causing her to shudder involuntarily. Content rights belong to .

She sensed a presence behind her but dared not turn around. Instead, she clung to herself, her nerves stretched to the brink of breaking. She waited for what seemed like an eternity, and finally, the sky turned pitch black. Kisa gathered her courage and spun around, only to come face to face with row upon row of ominous tombstones. Her heart skipped a beat in terror.

Glancing at her phone, she saw that it was only a little past six. She tried to distract herself by scrolling through her phone, but it abruptly shut down, drained of power. Panic surged through her

veins.

‘With a dead phone, how am I supposed to call Adrien to come pick me up? The remote location makes it impossible to get a taxi.‘ If not for Anthony still up on the hill, she would have been a quivering mess by now. Frozen in place, she could only wait, hoping that the heartless man would return to find her.

‘Doesn’t he care about the child growing inside me? Surely, for the sake of the child, he would come back. Right?’
