The moonlight seeped through cracks in the storm-heavy clouds, faint and fleeting, as if the heavens themselves dared not linger over Southrade. The distant rumble of thunder rolled closer, pressing the townsfolk into hurried steps.
BOOM!
The explosion tore through the night, rattling windows and sending a plume of dust and smoke spiraling into the air. Screams erupted as part of an inn collapsed in a fiery burst, debris raining down like the wrath of an angry god.
Alice staggered backward out of the chaos, her boots scraping against the slick cobblestones as she fought to steady herself. The hilt of her sword was slick with sweat, her trembling hands struggling to maintain their grip. Her chest heaved, heart hammering against her ribcage as if trying to break free.
I struck him. I know I struck him. Her mind raced, replaying the moment her blade connected—the flash of her enchanted sword slicing through his neck. It had to have worked. No one could have survived that.
But the dust refused to settle.
The wreckage hissed and groaned as tiny pieces of rubble continued to rain down, but beyond that, there was only silence.
Alice’s pulse quickened. Her golden eyes remained fixed on the swirling smoke, unblinking. Her breathing grew shallow as her instincts screamed at her to run. But her feet refused to move. He’s dead. He has to be dead…
Then, she heard it—a slow, deliberate rhythm.
Footsteps.
Her breath caught, and her entire body tensed. A faint glow flickered from within the smoke, ominous and unnatural.
The sound grew louder, heavier with each step, until the glow became two blazing golden embers—eyes.
A chill raced down her spine. Her body felt numb, her limbs unwilling to respond. Her throat tightened as fear seeped into her chest. This isn’t the man I traveled with… this is something else.
A low chuckle broke through the silence.
The smoke parted as Axel emerged, his towering figure framed by the faint light of the ruined inn behind him. His golden eyes burned with a malevolence that pierced straight through her, pinning her in place like prey caught in a predator’s gaze.
Alice’s stomach twisted violently as her grip on her sword tightened. Sweat poured down her temples, her instincts screaming at her to run, yet she stood her ground, forcing her feet into the slick cobblestones beneath her.
“. . . Looks like you’ve figured out who I really am,” Axel said, his voice low and mocking.
He raised a hand and pulled back his hood, revealing his face fully to her for the first time. Alice’s pupils shrank as she took in the sight before her. His features were sharp, his expression twisted into a cruel grin that radiated nothing but carnage and malice.
It wasn’t human. It wasn’t even close.
Alice’s chest tightened. This is the monster I was sent to kill. The Reaper.
“You’re with him, aren’t you?” Axel’s tone was almost casual as he cracked his neck, the sound echoing in the stillness of the street. “Yokubo sent you.”
Alice’s breath hitched as her grip tightened on her sword. Her mind raced for a plan, but doubt seeped into her resolve. She thought she had prepared for this moment. She thought she understood what it meant to face Axel. But now, standing before him, the aura of death surrounding him was suffocating.

Axel’s grin widened, sharp and unnerving. Without looking, he stretched out a hand toward the fleeing crowd. Shadows writhed at his command, forming a massive clawed hand that snatched a sword from a passing adventurer. With a flick of his wrist, the weapon soared into his outstretched palm.
Alice’s pulse quickened as she watched him test the blade, its whistle slicing through the air.
“I was going to let you live,” Axel muttered, his voice darkening with every word. Her stomach sank as his golden eyes narrowed, radiating unrestrained bloodlust.
“But now you’ve forced my hand.”
Before she could react, Axel lunged.
Alice barely raised her sword in time to block his strike. The impact was deafening, sparks raining down as a shockwave rippled through the cobblestones. Her arms trembled under the force, every muscle in her body straining as she held her ground.
He’s stronger than I imagined.
Axel didn’t pause, his attacks relentless and brutal. Each swing of his blade aimed to end the fight in a single stroke, leaving no room for error. Alice stayed on the defensive, deflecting and redirecting his strikes with precision born from experience. Her instincts screamed at her to retreat, but she held firm, refusing to give an inch.
He swung again, this time with more speed, and she sidestepped just in time. His blade cleaved through empty air, and Alice countered, aiming for his exposed flank. Axel twisted sharply, their blades clashing again with a metallic shriek.
He’s adapting, Alice thought grimly as she adjusted her grip. His strength was undeniable, but his aggression was a double-edged sword. She had fought warriors like him before—those who relied too heavily on brute force.
Their blades collided once more, and Alice’s heels dug into the fractured ground. Sweat dripped down her brow as her sharp eyes tracked his movements, searching for a pattern. Axel’s silence unnerved her, but it also betrayed him. Every shift in his stance, every flicker of his golden eyes gave her just enough to anticipate his next move.
Axel lunged again, his blade descending in a vicious arc. Alice ducked, her speed enhanced by her abilities, and spun behind him. Her blade lashed out, aiming for his back, but he blocked it with an almost inhuman reflex. Their faces were inches apart, his blank expression radiating pure malice.
Alice swallowed hard, her fear threatening to bubble over, but her resolve burned brighter. I can win this.
“May His grace bless me with divine power,” she whispered, her voice steady. Her blade began to glow faintly, a holy energy pulsing through it. Axel hesitated for the first time, his gaze flickering to the light. Alice seized the moment.
She lunged forward, her sword a blur of radiant light. Axel blocked, but her relentless assault began to overwhelm him. Her strikes were fast, precise, and unrelenting, each swing driving him further back. She could feel the cracks in his defenses, the subtle falter in his movements.
He’s too aggressive, too focused on overpowering me. That’s his weakness.
She feinted left, drawing his attention, before pivoting sharply to the right. Her blade arced upward, aiming for his shoulder. Axel reacted too late, his movement leaving his side exposed.
“Divine Blade!” Alice’s voice rang out like a battle cry as she poured all her strength into the strike.
Her glowing blade tore through Axel’s defense, slicing across his chest in a devastating arc. Blood sprayed into the air as he staggered backward, hitting the ground with a heavy thud. His dark cloak pooled around him, his blood soaking into the dirt.
Alice stood over him, her chest heaving, her sword’s glow fading. Her hands trembled from the effort, but she didn’t lower her guard. Her eyes remained fixed on his fallen form, waiting, watching.
Is it over?
The storm clouds above rumbled ominously as the first drops of rain began to fall. The silence that followed was deafening, broken only by the sound of Alice’s labored breathing. She took a cautious step back, her sword still raised, her body tense.
And then she saw it.
Axel’s body twitched.
Alice’s breath caught in her throat as his limbs moved unnaturally, his body contorting as though controlled by an invisible force. Slowly, impossibly, he began to rise, the gaping wound on his chest knitting itself together with grotesque efficiency. Blood dripped from his lips, but his golden eyes burned brighter than ever.

Alice’s heart pounded in her chest as fear threatened to take hold. Axel tilted his head, his expression as blank as before, but the malice radiating from him was palpable. He reached for his sword, the movement deliberate and unnervingly calm.
Alice gritted her teeth, her grip tightening on her blade. No matter what happens… I’m not backing down.
As Axel lunged at her, faster and stronger than before, Alice braced herself, her determination unwavering. The battle was far from over.
Axel lunged toward Alice with terrifying speed, his sword slicing through the air in a deadly downward arc. The force of his blow was immense, and Alice barely managed to raise her own blade in time to block it. The collision sent a shockwave through her arms, her feet sliding back against the dirt as she planted herself firmly, trying to absorb the impact. Axel’s strength had increased significantly—every strike now carried the weight of a crushing force.
Alice gritted her teeth, her muscles straining as she held him at bay. Axel’s smirk widened, his golden eyes glowing with malicious delight as he leaned into the clash, forcing her to retreat further with every push. Her legs trembled under the pressure, her boots carving shallow grooves into the ground as she dug in.
The realization hit her hard: he was growing stronger, faster—at a rapid speed.
Thinking quickly, Alice decided to use his growing arrogance against him. She loosened her grip slightly, letting his strength overpower her intentionally. Axel surged forward, expecting her resistance, but the sudden shift in pressure threw him off balance. He stumbled slightly, and Alice seized the opening, twisting her body to the side to deliver a counterstrike.
Her sword sang through the air in a calculated arc, aimed directly for his exposed side. But before it could land, Axel pivoted with unnatural agility, flipping forward over her blade. He avoided the attack entirely, his speed a blur of motion that left Alice momentarily stunned.
He's learning…
Alice muttered under her breath, her eyes narrowing as she charged again. She swung with precision, her blade aimed to force Axel back, but his newfound strength and speed matched her move for move.
Axel countered with a horizontal slash aimed at her midsection, and though Alice managed to block it, the sheer force of the impact sent her flying. Her back smashed into a massive tree with a deafening crack, splintering the trunk in two. The tree collapsed, and Alice was thrown further, her body slamming against the crumbling wall of a nearby building.
The collision left her dazed, blood smearing the wall where she’d hit. Bricks rained down around her as she slumped to the ground, her body crumpling into the rubble. The world spun violently, her vision doubling as she tried to focus. A sharp, piercing pain throbbed in her head, dulling her senses.
From the shadowy haze, the sound of measured footsteps echoed ominously, each step heavier than the last. Axel emerged slowly, his movements deliberate, like a predator savoring the moment before the kill. His glowing eyes locked onto Alice, and a wicked grin stretched across his face.
Alice’s head felt as though it were splitting open, her breathing shallow and uneven. The left side of her face burned, cold and wet. She reached up with trembling fingers, brushing against her skin. When she pulled her hand away, it was slick with blood.

Alice's grip tightens around her sword, her knuckles pale and bloodied. She draws a deep breath, steadying the fire coursing through her veins. Her sister’s face flashes in her mind, fragile and haunted, fueling the determination that floods her chest. There’s no turning back now—she will not falter. This is a battle she cannot afford to lose, even if it costs her everything.
She charges forward with all her strength, rain-soaked boots hammering against the slick ground. Her focus narrows on Axel, who stands waiting, his grin stretching unnaturally wide. He raises a single hand, and two shadowy hands burst from the earth, twisting toward her like serpents.
Alice doesn't flinch. She exhales sharply, her body moving with instinct as she darts past the first shadow hand, twisting mid-step to avoid the second. Axel’s laughter echoes through the storm, wild and unhinged. With a flick of his wrist, more shadow hands erupt from the ground—dozens of them—tearing through the landscape as they converge on her.
The ground splinters under their force, trees topple like matchsticks, and debris flies in all directions. They come from every angle, relentless and chaotic. Alice’s heart pounds in her ears, each beat like a war drum, but she doesn’t stop. Trust your instincts. Her blade flashes, cutting down a shadow hand with a sharp strike before ducking under another. She leaps and twists, her movements fluid despite the exhaustion coursing through her body.
The storm blurs around her. Pain tears at her as the shadow hands graze her skin, leaving trails of blood that stain her armor. Time seems to slow, raindrops hanging in the air as she weaves between death’s grasp. Every step brings her closer to Axel, her focus unwavering.
Axel’s laughter intensifies as Alice barrels toward him, cutting down the last of the shadow hands in her path. With a mighty cry, she swings her sword downward, her blade gleaming in the faint light.
Axel raises his own weapon just in time to block, the impact shattering the ground beneath him. The clash reverberates through the air, a violent burst of energy that shakes the battlefield. Axel’s grin twists into something darker, the manic glint in his golden eyes growing more intense. He swings his sword wildly, laughing uncontrollably as rage overtakes him.
Alice meets his frenzy with unrelenting precision, her sword moving with calculated ferocity. Sparks dance between their blades as they strike faster than the rain can fall. The storm becomes a backdrop to their duel, each movement slicing through the downpour.
Axel’s strength surges again, his swings heavier and faster with every strike. Alice feels the weight of his power pressing against her, but she lets her instincts take over, countering each of his wild attacks with calm precision. The sharp clanging of steel fills the air as their swords clash, each blow sending tremors through their bodies.
Her eyes narrow as Axel vanishes in a blur. A chilling breeze brushes against the back of her neck, and she senses his presence before he strikes. Without hesitation, she dives forward, narrowly avoiding his blade as it whistles past her. Landing with her palms against the ground, she kicks backward with all her might, her legs slamming into Axel’s chest.
He grunts, his body flying back like a rag doll, but Alice doesn’t give him a moment to recover. She leaps forward, spinning gracefully in mid-air before thrusting her blade toward him with all the strength she can muster.
Axel raises his sword to block, but the force of her strike proves too much. The steel groans before snapping in half with a sharp, jarring crack. Axel stumbles, his wide grin faltering for the first time.
Alice doesn’t let up, her heart roaring with determination. This is for Annabelle.
Alice’s breath catches in her throat as the broken sword clatters to the ground. For the first time, a flicker of hope sparks in her chest. She can feel the tide turning, the faint glimmer of victory within reach. Her hands tighten around her hilt as she steadies herself for the final blow.
But then Axel moves.
A low, guttural laugh escapes his lips, growing louder, more twisted. His golden eyes glint with an unholy light, his grin spreading unnaturally wide. Before Alice can even process what’s happening, he bends down, snatching the shattered halves of his blade with his bare hands.
“What the…” Alice whispers, her voice trembling, but the words die on her lips.
With a sharp, almost gleeful groan, Axel plunges the jagged edges into his own legs. Blood sprays from the wound, painting the ground crimson as the sickening sound of steel tearing through flesh fills the air.
