Chapter 2: Departure

Chapter 2: Departure

I was stuck in the hospital for a week more for rehabilitation and to observe my condition though I'm not complained, they have some pretty damn good food here. My strength managed to recover to reasonable standards and today I would be leaving. My family was here visiting often, I found myself much more comfortable in their company since my near death experience, too bad I would be leaving. We had our tearful goodbyes yesterday and my little sister wouldn't let go until I agreed to skype them once a week.

Climbing out of bed, I stand up and walk into the personal hospital bathroom.

Over the past week whenever I was alone I have been learning more about my abilities, they had provided me with a laptop as well when I asked which I made sure to make use of. I managed to learn a few cool tricks. It's.. pretty damn sick. I grin as I hold my hand out towards a disposable toothbrush, which shoots up from the bathroom counter and into my hand as I use it to brush my teeth.

I look myself over in the mirror as I brush, I barely even look like me anymore. I am thin, even thinner than regular for a boy my age. Not to mention that my face without all the extra flesh was.. It was something, My face was clear of any markings and was overly pale, while my frame was also small at a 5'5 and my black hair that was still too long. Which leads to the worst part of this week, A hot nurse thought I was a girl from a distance. I thought I was going to cry, but that probably wouldn't help the manly image.

I spit out the toothpaste and exit the bathroom, changing into the clothes my grandfather had prepared for me, since all of my old ones were over-sized. It was a dark gray button down shirt with fitted black pants and black sneakers from some fancy brand I didn't care about. The only thing that mattered was it was very comfortable. 'I could get used to this style' I smirk as I look myself over in a mirror by the bed.

Looking at the clock there was still an hour until grandfather will be here to take me to the airport, I sat down on the bed and pulled the laptop out from under it for the mean time.

While it starts up I take out a generic fantasy book I requested from the bedside drawer, which I will to hover in the air. I figured out that if I use my new 'talents' more often that they will grows stronger. Going onto google docs I look over the chart I made to keep track of my abilities, disguised under the name of 'Cool abilities to have' It's not very well hidden but I doubt anyone is going to look into a kids fantasies.

I look over the list as it opens.

Telekinesis: The ability to move solid objects with mind, Initial range limit from user set at five feet, while currently at ten. Unsure of weight limit, able to lift everything in room aside from bed, maximum objects it is able to effect currently at three. Ability still growing.

Focus: The ability to speed up users mental process’, current range of speed from 1x to 4x regular thought speed, faster speeds require more energy. While in focus memory is improved to total photographic. Ability still growing.

Mental Realm: When unconscious enters strange gray box which can be controlled like a dream, except for a small sapling stuck in center of room that cannot be touched, moved, or erased.

Even while not in focus mode I can still feel my memory improving, It is at least three times better than past. Which is pretty much a godsend for this private school I've only been told the bare minimum about. He said it was on a large island in the middle of the pacific ocean. But that's about all I got, went on about how he would explain more on the private plane.

Deciding to stop thinking about it since I'll figure out eventually I just turn off the laptop, turning my attention away I lean back in the bed and press the power button on the television with my mind. 'God this would be a great excuse to be lazy..' I mentally click through the channels until I find something decent looking and leave that on. Focusing my mind to four times normal speed and split my attention between the book floating and the tv, I keep it up for about five minutes before I begin to grow light headed, by eight minutes I feel like someone is taking a hammer to my skull. I drop the book into my hand and resume my Focus to normal speed.

I relax and watch tv normally for the next ten minutes before beginning the same thing again, Its training and entertaining. The best of both words. I manage to repeat the process two more times after that before my grandfather walks in with his guards, luckily during my rest period, doesn't anyone knock anymore?

"Oh good you're fully dressed, I've already signed you out so just grab your..." He pauses, looking over the only thing that I actually kind of own in here, which are the clothes on my back. "Right, right sorry. Cmon my boy we have a plane waiting for us."

"Alright gramps." I nod my head as I hop out of bed, following him out towards the lobby. I don't really know why mom never talks about him, as far as I can tell he is a pretty decent guy.

We make our way out of the hospital and hop into a high-end limo. And when I say high end I mean there's a jacuzzi on the back, too bad I don't have swim trunks.

"So... are you going to tell me what country we are going to now?" I question.

"Of course not! I told you, on the plane." He deflects the question.

I sigh and sit back, looking over the two bodyguards he brought with him, Black suits and shades as always, sitting entirely still. Why the hell are they even wearing shades anyways we're in a car, fashion statement? I'm not sure why but it bothers me.

I shrug, nothing I can really do about it, I change my attention to focusing. slowing things down and reading whatever goes by, occasionally pushing something inconspicuous with my mind though I make sure not to go far enough to get nose bleeds as that would be suspicious.

This goes on for about five minutes before I take a break, turning back to the inside of the vehicle to see my grandfather staring at me. "Uh.. whats up?"

He shakes his head. "Nothing." The rest of the ride is kept in silence. The airport isn't far away as we arrive that in about twenty minutes. It's a private plane ready for take off.

Grandpa, the guards, and I climb onto the plane, entering a decently sized cabin with fairly comfy looking chairs and a television, there's a door leading further towards the front of the plane with a guard standing in front of it. I sit down in a chair next to grandpa while the guards just stood by the doors.

"Ahh.. shouldn't they sit down?" I question, since when we take off the’yd get sent tumbling towards the back of the plane.

"Oh no they’ll be fine. But while the plane is prepping we can talk. Tell me Jack, What did you see at the 'terrorist attack?' From what I heard you were having some form of delusion." He watches me carefully for my response.

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

"What I saw...? There were these people fighting in the sky, destroying everything with.. magic. I remember names, it was Ar-" I begin to explain before he cuts me off.

"Say no more! if you speak their names they will know of it!" He sounds frantic.

"What are you talking about? You know I wasn’t fantasizing things?" I'm surprised, no matter what I looked up or who I talked to it was all claimed to be ISIS.

Grandpa Leonard nods his head. "Everything you saw was real, and those were gods. It’s very easy for them to cover up their infighting with an illusion spell here and there. Yet somehow you’re not affected, not to mention that you were in a disturbingly long coma after the incident Even though from the reports it states that your mental state was fine, despite a few times where it sent electrical impulses beyond the normal human. You see Jack, the reason I am explaining this all to you and why we are here is because from what my agent told me on your birth your magical talent was too low to learn. Yet after the coma it increased somehow and a faint trace of magical energy radiating from you. I was really worrying that I wouldn’t have anyone to take over when I pass. Lucky for me huh?"

The plane quickly starts up, making it's way down the path before ascending into the air, gaining speed without a sign of slowing. I guess I won’t be seeing Illinois for a while."I’m not shocked, I knew it had to be real..." I explain. I’m not sure if I should tell him about my abilities, but he might have some way to help me train them. Though I will keep the part about the Seed, which is what I assume is the source of my ability. From the conversation the item is probably extremely important.. So I’ll keep that part to myself.

“Then grandpa... you’re a magician? And how come mom never talks about you?" I feel a slew of questions coming on.

"Yes, It’s usually genetic however since your grandmother wasn’t a magician your mother had a chance not to have potential as well, so she didn't. I never married her mother since I was unable to marry a normal so I was never around."

"What? Is there some law against mages showing their magic to normal people?" It seems like a strange law.

"Yes, jealousy is a dangerous thing, and with the current ratio of magic-abled and non magic-abled there would likely be a war with too many casualties to be worth it. Ever heard of the witch trials? Much worse than it was portrayed in history."

"Wait, so there’s just not enough magic for the less talented to use it? It can’t just be... increased somehow?"

"Well..If one were to open a wide enough rift to a world abundant with magic it’s possible, but that’s beyond current magician's abilities. The gods could but there are rules against them interfering with other worlds."

"Other worlds? How many can there be?"

"Well.. Countless is what we assume, we've yet to be able to open a path to one but we are getting closer. We hope to have a gate within the next thirty years. Won't that be exciting." He smiles thoughtfully at the idea.

"That does sound really cool.. Right there’s something I wanted you to help me with grandpa." I prepare to explain to him about my abilities.

"Oh, what is it?" He inquires

"Well when I woke up I felt different, I've managed to speed up my mental speed by about four times as my current maximum. As well as a slight photographic memory and telekinesis." I demonstrate for him as I will the television remote to hover. "And they get stronger rather quickly, though I get bad headaches if I overuse it."

"Really? I’ve never heard of a magic to speed up the mind of the user.. nor one for photographic memory. Though the Telekinesis is a common magic it requires a short chant or at least a hand signal, yet you don't even need to move.. Fascinating! And if they improve with my resources we can really expand the company!" He excitedly speaks with a glimmer in his eyes.

"Great, that’s exactly what I was hoping for, By the way can you tell me where the academy is now?" I speak, glancing out the window shocked to find us already out over the ocean.

"Right, we are going to the Island of Marcia, Home of all things magic. Its off of all of the maps and is hidden with an illusion array."

"Really? Is there a lot of magic there?!" I can feel myself growing excited.

"Of course, there’s not a single person without magic on the island, and it is used in everyday lifestyles. You’ll see soon enough. In about half an hour we will be arriving in Claire city"

"An hour? Also how the hell are we already over the ocean. we didn’t take off until a short while ago."

"A simple combination of magic and technology. You see the room over there?" He points towards the door that lead deeper into the plane. "In there I have ten Wind magic specialist's using a special array to reduce wind resistance and push us farther forward." He yawns. "Do you have any more questions?"

"Well, Can I go look at the array you were talking about?" I think I asked everything I needed, the rest I should be able to find out when we get there. I really just want to see some magic at work.

"Alright, I need to take a nice long nap now, just wake me up when we arrive." He leans back in his chair and closes his eyes.

Nodding, I stand up in my chair and head into the back room, which is entirely empty aside from five middle aged people in white robes and another older man around gramps age. The five mages sit around the circle meditating and there is a large clear crystal on a pedestal in the middle.

"Ahh, you must be the young master." The old man approaches me.

"Er, Hello. My name is Jack." I attempt to shake his hand only to have him bow. "Err.. Bowing is embarrassing.. Why are you doing that?"

"Ah, forgive me young master Jack, I forgot that you don’t know the influence that your grandfather holds. What brings you back here?"

"Well I was interested in the magic array that gramps told me about and I was just curious to how it works."

"I can definitely help you with that, just ask me anything and I'll explain it to you."

"What is that crystal in the middle?"

"That would be concentrated wind magic, It is made by a group of mages condensing their mana together until it becomes a solid form, It’s one of the higher tier of catalyst's for wind magic arrays." He explains diligently.

I nod my head in understanding, kuku. It’s like everything is a game. This is the best. Focusing, I make sure to remember everything I can as I ask him more questions throughout the entire trip. I am going to learn everything about magic.
