Chapter 2 What's that?

A slightly transparent, blue tinted screen popped up in front of Ilara’s mind eye. Or that was how she thought it worked, since she couldn’t open her eyes.

Ilara really really really wanted to lose her shit about the fact that she still had 15 MORE WEEKS to go in this suffocating darkness (yes, the accommodation was downgraded). But unfortunately, the system knew what it was doing with its drugs, and she promptly fell asleep without truly looking at her status screen.

----------------------------------------

So… Yeah. That happened, Ilara mused after waking up from her forced nap. Although she wasn’t under any influence of drugs, she felt remarkably calm given the situation. Somehow, the nap had given her enough time to reclaim her equilibrium. Did this mean she wasn’t upset anymore about her situation? Fuck no. but she at least realized that she had no control over how she got here and no way out. That left being rational and calm as the best option. Besides, she thought, suppressing one’s emotion is a viable coping mechanism, I swear!

Ilara pulled up her status screen again. Let’s see what we get to work with… The good news is that I am still human and female. I’m not sure if I could have handled being anything other than that. Although how cool would it be to turn into a housecat? Naps all day and free food… Anyway. I guess my parents are supposed to pick my name. I hope they pick something cool and not something like Paris or Rose. I prefer something a little more unique.

I still have 14 weeks and 6 days to go before I’m released from this prison. Wait… I could have sworn it said 15 weeks last time. I guess naps aren’t so bad after all. And at least I know that a week has 7 days here too. Unless I’ve been asleep for more than a day, but I doubt that. I’ll keep an eye on it, just in case.

Poking around class, level, and experience didn’t result in any information, which just meant she had to play around with it eventually. She did, however, have a title.

Title Reincarnated

Somehow, your soul managed to find an empty vessel to inhabit after your death. For having such a primal will to live, +20 willpower. For retaining your memories and knowledge from your previous life, +10 to wisdom and +10 to intelligence. For earning this title, you will be able to freely access your status screen from now on, instead at the age of 10. Furthermore, you will have no limits to the amount or type of skills you can learn. Note that this does not include spells.

The first thought that popped into Ilara’s mind was what has my soul been up to without my knowledge?! I look away for one moment and boom, I’m somehow in a fetus. Did I kick out the original soul? The description says empty vassal, so I don’t think so. God, I hope not. Okay, bright thoughts.

Free gifts are always nice, I guess. I wonder what kind of limits there are for normal person. Guess I’ll have to wait and see. Although Ilara still felt uneasy about the whole situation (who wouldn’t?), she also couldn’t help feeling a little excited. She was in a whole new world if what she read about spells existing was right. She seemed to have a leg up compared to normal people, which was always nice. I wonder if I can learn skills when I’m not even born… It would make the time go faster… She mentally shook her head to get back on track. First, let’s finish poring over the rest of the status screen.

Let’s see… Attributes. Mhm. I’m kind of getting a gaming vibe. Don’t let this be some kind of horror game please! Ilara focused her attention on each attribute, getting a short description of what it means. Strength is about how hard you can hit, how much you can carry and how healthy you are. Endurance is about how long you can last, and also how healthy you are. I’m seeing some overlap, although no clue how it works. Ilara mentally shrugged and just accepted it. Agility is about how nimble you and how good your reflexes are. Intelligence and wisdom seem to be an odd duck. Intelligence is about how much mana you have, and wisdom is about how fast you regenerate it. Does that mean… there is magic in this world?! She couldn’t help but dance a little jig. New things to explore, neat! I wonder how it works… More stuff on the list to figure out later. Ilara sighed. It’s becoming a long list… Anyway, willpower is also a strange one. It influences casting time for spells, strength of spells, the power of my soul (whatever that may mean), and mental fortitude.

I seem to be shaping up to be one badass, spell-slinging baby… if not for the restriction on magic. It seems that magic needs to be unlocked and one can only do that at the age of 12, or so the system tells me. Bummer. Then again, I can only imagine the destruction a baby in a tantrum could wrought if that restriction wasn’t there. Then again… It unlocks or at least can be unlocked when kids hit puberty. Like that’s not a recipe for disaster.

So, with pain in her heart, Ilara put her plans of being a magical badass on hold for the next decade. But I promise, it is not forgotten! It just means I have 12 years to figure out what magic actually means in this world and to come up with good ideas. Satisfied with her exploration, Ilara once again settled in for a nap.

----------------------------------------

So, Ilara mused. My status screen seems pretty straight forward. I still have questions of course. Like why is there a status screen to begin with. Why are things like your health not depicted. How do I raise my attributes, what are the consequences, etc. But I suspect those questions have to wait until I’m old enough to ask them. But for now I can focus on something else: skills. Thanks to my title, I have no limitations on the amount or type of skill. And I’m hoping, since I’m conscious and have a status screen, I can acquire and train skills. It would keep me busy. But where to start… After some more musing, Ilara decided on something easy. After all, she could only use her mind. Math is supposed to be an universal truth, right? Regardless how it’s called. So let’s start there. I’ll begin with some easy math and work my way up from there.

1+1=2 … … … … … … …

1+2=3 … … … … … … …

1+3=4 … … … … … … …

1+4=5 … … … … … … 1+99=100

She waited for a few seconds after finishing her, admittingly pretty boring, addition. But nothing happened. Maybe it wasn’t enough?

100-1=99 … … … … … … …

99-2=97 … … … … … … …

97-3=94 … … … … … … …

94-4=90 … … … … … … -10-100=-110

Jeez, still nothing? This system is picky, Ilara huffed. I refuse to believe I can’t learn skills yet. How about multiplying?

1x1=1 … … … … … … …

1x2=2 … … … … … … …

1x3=3 … … … … … … …

1x4=4 … … … … … … 12x12=144

Really?! I mean, yeah, this is kind of pathetic for my previous life. But I’m 24 weeks and 1 day old! I’m a genius! Acknowledge meeee! She fell silent for a few seconds. No? Fine. Divisions then. Stupid system, she muttered dissatisfied.

1/1=1 … … … … … … …

2/1=2 … … … … … … …

3/1=3 … … … … … … …

4/1=4 … … … … … … 150/15=10

Ding.

You receive the title Frontrunner for gaining your first level and skill before your first birthday. With this title, you receive +1 to endurance, and +5 to intelligence.

Holy crap! Warn a girl before you start to throw out these screens! Ilara exclaimed mentally as blue screens popped up one after another. Didn’t know math was so profitable. Good to know that learning skills result in experience, which can make you level up, which in turn grants you attribute points. I wonder what other titles I can get though. Especially since there seems to be a time requirement for some. This sounds like a perfect time to grind! But first… A nap!
