[Part 2 - Welcome to the Guild]
Pushing open the heavy wooden door of the guild hall, I'm greeted by a loud creak, almost as if the door is saying hello to me.
The scent of polished wood and ink wafts through the air, mingling with the sound of fervent discussion and the clinking of metal.
"Whoa... this place is... kinda intense."
I whisper quietly, trying to hide my nervousness with a feeble joke, aiming to ease the tense vibe.
But the truth is, I stick out like a sore thumb among these seasoned adventurers, pretending like I belong here.
Looking around, I can't help but admire the intricate details of the weapons, the beautiful designs on the armour, and the intense focus on studying the maps. Everyone looks so prepared for whatever comes next.
I take a moment to size up the crowd, my eyes darting from one adventurer to the next. There's a level fifty over there, a level twenty-four across the room, and wow, someone at level eighty-nine with 879,350 HP. These guys are no joke.
And then there's me, barely scratching the surface of this whole adventuring thing.
"Excuse me." I mumble softly, approaching a group of guild members huddled around a table strewn with maps and swords. "Uhm... could someone point me in the direction of... well, anything really? I'm kinda new here."
A formidable dwarf with a weathered face, his bushy eyebrows furrowed with curiosity, looks up from his map and grunts at you, exuding an aura of battle-hardened experience. He looks like he's been through his fair share of battles, and I can't help but feel a little intimidated.
But to my surprise, he gives me a warm smile and gestures for me to come closer.
"Don't worry, lad. We've all been there. Head over to the receptionist; she'll help you out."
He points a thick finger in the direction of a desk across the spacious room.
"But watch out, she's got a bit of a flirty side."
Thankful, I head to the guild's reception desk, following the dwarf's directions. Approaching closer, I can't help but be captivated by the receptionist—an enchanting elf with a graceful figure, long golden hair flowing past the desk, and eyes as green as emeralds. She greets me with a warm smile; her gaze lingers on me, tracing a slow path from my face, down to my feet, and then back up again, each movement deliberate and tantaliing. With every upward sweep, her eyes seem to drink in every detail, leaving a trail of heat in their wake.
"Um, hey. I was told to come here... for directions. I'm kinda new."
I stutter aloud, feeling a heat rise up my neck as I meet the receptionist's eyes. I feel embarrassed for coming off as a total rookie, which I am.
The elf receptionist's smile widens, and a seductive glint dances in her emerald eyes as she leans forward, subtly resting her chin on her delicate hand.
"Well, well, aren't you just the adorable newcomer?" She purrs, her voice a velvety caress like honey. "You're in luck. I can help you with anything you need."
Her words give me a chill, and a mix of thrill and caution rushes through me.
She's gorgeous, no doubt about it, but there's something about her that sets off alarm bells in the back of my mind. Maybe it's the way she's looking at me, like I'm some kind of... prey.
I know this feeling well—a painful reminder of past mistreatment by those who thought themselves better than me. Not as though they weren't.
"So, uh, any tips on where to start?"
I ask, hoping to steer the conversation back to something less... unsettling.
"Are you a member of a guild? If not, consider it my dream to find the right match for someone as compelling as you."
I blink, momentarily taken aback by her sudden change in demeanour.
"Uh, yeah, I'm not in a guild."
"Well, then, you're in luck. I happen to know of a guild that's perfect for someone like you."
"Really? And which guild would that be?"
I ask with my curiosity piqued, despite my wariness.
The receptionist giggles, making a sound like tinkling bells, and leans in closer, her breath warm against my ear.
"My daughter's guild." She whispers conspiratorially with a mischievous glint in her eye, as if sharing a secret.
"You have a daughter? I didn't realise..."
I blurt out before I can stop myself, immediately regretting my lack of tact. But still... She has a daughter? It's hard to believe, considering how youthful and vibrant she appears.
The receptionist simply chuckles at my question, nodding proudly.
"Yes, she started her own guild a few years ago. She's quite the leader, if I do say so myself... And I happen to know they're looking for new members. I think you'd fit right in with them."
"Can you tell me about the guild and how I can join?"
The receptionist leans back in her chair, a pensive expression flitting across her features, hinting at hidden thoughts and mysteries.
She grins, her warmth reaching me.
"Oh, it's easy when you're with me~" She says with a playful tone.
"Although if you're keen on joining, why don't you tantalise me with a glimpse into your world? Start with your name, and I'll be more than willing to reciprocate."
I hesitate for a moment, unsure if I should reveal my name so easily. But her welcoming demeanour and playful banter put me at ease.
"I'm Sora Mugenshi."
"Ah, Sora... Such a captivating name."
Her voice purrs like silk, wrapping around my name with a seductive allure.
"And as for me..." She pauses, her lips curving into a playful smile as she leans in closer, her breath brushing against my ear like a whispered promise. "... I go by Aurelia Starlight."
"Aurelia Starlight..." I repeat, testing the name on my tongue. "It suits you."
She chuckles; the sound is a siren's melody to my ears.
"Thank you, Sora. Now, indulge me. Where do you come from?"
"Um, well, I'm actually not from around here. I ended up here because of... a couple of individuals who escorted me here."
I admit, feeling a bit awkward about revealing my circumstances.
She leans back in her chair, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
"Well, lucky for you, Sora, your adventure is just beginning. How would you like to take a glimpse into the heart of our world?"
"Your world?" I ask, curiosity piqued. "What do you mean by that?"
Aurelia grins, her expression playful yet enigmatic.
"I mean the guild, of course. Specifically, my daughter's private guild."
"Private guild? I didn't realise there were different types."
"Oh, indeed, there are. This grand structure you're in is the guild hall. But within this hub of activity lie smaller, more exclusive guilds, each with its own unique culture and purpose."
"That makes more sense."
"Well. Enough stalling." Aurelia gestures for me to follow her, and I trail close behind as we exit the guild hall.
"Hey... Why don't you... hold my hand?" I shoot Aurelia a puzzled glance, unsure of her sudden request. But before I can question her further, she locks her fingers with mine, her grip firm yet gentle.
Suddenly, I feel a warping sensation, as if I'm moving through space instantly, and before I can comprehend what's happening, we are no longer in the guild hall. Instead, we find ourselves standing on another street; this one is less crowded, but there are large buildings on each side.
"What did you..."
"Stellar Shift. It's a skill that basically allows me to teleport wherever I want."
As I try to process Aurelia's explanation of her skill, Stellar Shift, I can't help but feel a sense of awe and curiosity. The ability to teleport is not something you encounter every day (Neither are killer skeletons).
I can't help but wonder about the extent of her powers and how she acquired such a unique skill.
"So... where exactly are we?"
"Welcome to my daughter's private guild."
... This is a guild? This whole street?
"No need to be surprised. Elysia is a smart and resourceful girl. And I'm proud of that. She built this entire space from scratch with her own two hands and her brilliant mind."
"Elysia?"
"My daughter."
"Oh... Right."
This is truly impressive. How did she come up with the idea to create her own guild?
"Come, I'll take you to her and attempt to persuade her to allow you to join. Your low level shouldn't be a problem."
Stolen novel; please report.
I'm... not even gonna ask.
She begins walking through the street with confidence.
As we walk, I can't help but feel a sense of anticipation building within me. What secrets and adventures await within Aurelia's daughter's guild?
"So, what's your daughter's guild like?" I ask, unable to contain my curiosity any longer.
"Hmmm~ I'm not really sure, she's quite secretive about it. It makes me a bit worried, if I'm being honest... But you're here to save the day and figure it out, right?"
I honestly can't tell if she's joking or being serious.
"Ah, sorry about that. But yeah, I'm here to figure things out, I guess."
As we continue our stroll through the guild street, my eyes dart around, taking in the sights and sounds of the various buildings around us.
Each one seems to have its own unique vibe, from the boisterous laughter emanating from one to the focused intensity of another.
"So, um, Aurelia. What should I expect when we meet your daughter? Is she... strict?"
Aurelia chuckles, her laughter like a melody in the bustling street.
"Oh, Elysia? Well, let's just say she's got a mind of her own. But don't worry, darling, she's got a soft spot for charming newcomers like yourself."
I can't help but grin at her reassurance, though a flicker of nerves still dances in the pit of my stomach. Meeting the daughter of the enigmatic Aurelia is bound to be an interesting experience.
As we approach the main building of the guild, Aurelia's gestures become more animated, and her words are infused with palpable enthusiasm. Her gaze sweeps over the courtyard before the entrance, and Aurelia continues to extol the virtues of her daughter's guild.
She gestures towards the various training grounds and workshops dotted around the area, each one brimming with activity and purpose.
"Here, you'll find state-of-the-art facilities for honing your skills and abilities. Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or just starting out on your journey, there's something here for everyone.
That's really all I can tell you."
As we step into the main guild building, I'm captivated by the intricate tapestries hanging on the walls and the soft glow of the chandeliers casting patterns on the polished wooden floors.
"Wow..."
The main room is bathed in warm, golden light, casting a soft glow over the polished wooden floors and intricately carved furnishings.
Weapons line the walls, gleaming with a deadly allure, while the air hums with an undercurrent of anticipation.
Aurelia guides me forward, her graceful strides matching the elegant atmosphere of the guild. I follow her lead, my senses on high alert as we approach the centre of the room.
There, amidst the array of weaponry, stands Elysia, or at least I think she is, her presence commands attention like a beacon in the night.
I swallow hard, my eyes widening at the sight of her. Elysia is every bit as stunning as Aurelia described—her long, wavy hair cascading down her back like liquid gold, her jade eyes sparkling with intelligence and mischief.
She blushes slightly, meeting my eyes with a coy smile on her lips.
"Ah, Elysia, darling! Look who I've brought to meet you."
Aurelia announces, her voice filled with maternal pride.
"Mother, this is the third time this month."
Aurelia chuckles, her laughter a soothing melody in the air.
"Well, darling, I can't help but want to show off my charming companion."
I can't help but feel a pang of uncertainty at the exchange between mother and daughter. Are they always like this?
Aurelia gestures towards me, her smile is bright and inviting.
"This is Sora Mugenshi, dear. He's new to our world, but I'm sure he'll prove himself to be quite an asset to your guild."
Elysia's gaze flickers over me, assessing and appraising. There's a glint of curiosity in her eyes, as if she's sizing me up, trying to determine my worth. I shift uncomfortably under her scrutiny, acutely aware of my low level and lack of experience.
"Well, Sora, it's a pleasure to meet you. I trust you'll find our guild to your liking. We have high standards here, but I'm sure you'll rise to the occasion."
I bow slightly, offering a tentative smile in return.
"Thank you, Elysia. I'll do my best to prove myself."
Aurelia beams at us, her eyes shining with pride.
"I have no doubt you will, darling. Now, why don't you two get acquainted while I catch up with some old friends?"
With that, she saunters off, leaving me alone with Elysia.
I turn to her, suddenly feeling the weight of her gaze like a physical presence.
"So, um, Elysia... What exactly do you expect from me?"
I try to sound confident despite the nerves gnawing at my insides.
Elysia's lips quirk into a small smile, her eyes glinting with amusement.
"Oh, just the usual. Loyalty, dedication, and a willingness to follow orders. But don't worry, Sora. I have a feeling you'll fit right in."
"Is it really that easy to join a guild?"
"Not normally, no. But if Mother is the one who brought you here, then I'll give you a chance... So, Sora." Elysia says, her gaze appraising as she studies me.
"What skills do you bring to the table? What can you offer our guild?"
I swallow nervously, suddenly feeling the weight of her scrutiny.
"Well, I may not be the strongest or the most experienced, but I'm determined to learn and improve. I'll do whatever it takes to contribute to the guild's success."
"Determination is a valuable quality, Sora. We can work with that."
"Where's everyone else?"
"Follow me; I'll show you."
I follow Elysia as she leads me through the guild hall, my heart pounding with excitement and nerves. As we walk, she explains the different areas of the guild.
"Everyone else is probably off on their own adventures or training sessions. We're a diverse bunch here, always pursuing our own goals but ready to come together when needed."
I nod, trying to appear confident despite the unease churning in my stomach. Elysia's composed demeanour is both reassuring and intimidating, and I can't shake the feeling that there's more to her than meets the eye.
"And as you probably already know, the whole street is the guild."
"W-well, I hope I can find my place here among such talented people... Despite my low level..." I stammer, feeling a mix of admiration and insecurity. Elysia smiles warmly.
"Your level is irrelevant here. What truly counts is your dedication and spirit."
Elysia affirms, emphasising the guild's welcoming and supportive ethos.
As she says those words, I notice her right eye glow brighter before her expression slightly changes. Maybe a frown? It's hard to say for sure. Though it quickly turns into a pleased grin.
"Simply concentrate on boosting your stats and bringing your unique flair to the guild." She reassures me, a wistful glint in her eyes hinting at her playful side. "You'll find your place here; I'm sure of it... Now, come, I'll take you to your private home."
"My private home?"
I ask, my eyes widening in surprise. Elysia nods, guiding me through the lively guild hall, until we reach a discreet door tucked away in a corner. As she opens it, I step inside to find a cosy room filled with comfortable furniture and decorations.
"This will be your sanctuary within the guild. A place where you can rest, relax, and live as if you were at home."
Elysia explains, gesturing around the room. I'm really thankful to Elysia and the guild for accepting me so warmly.
I can't believe how fortunate I am to have found a place like this. It truly feels like a home away from home.
"I'll allow you to settle in, meet me back where you first found me when you're ready. Oh, and... Welcome to the guild. I hope you'll find your time here... fulfilling..."
Elysia smiles warmly before exiting the room, leaving me to take in the peaceful atmosphere of the sanctuary.
I begin to wander through the house, exploring each room with curiosity. From the first floor to the second, I find a seamless transition in design and decor. The first floor is cosy and inviting, with warm tones and comfortable furniture.
As I ascend to the second floor, I notice a shift in atmosphere—the rooms are bathed in natural light, creating a bright and airy feel. The walls are adorned with beautiful artwork, and the shelves are filled with books. It's clear that every detail has been thoughtfully considered to provide a sense of tranquillity and belonging.
My heart swells with gratitude once more as I realise how lucky I am to have stumbled upon this place.
Eventually, I stumble upon the bedroom, which is a peaceful sanctuary with a large, plush bed and soft, luxurious linens. The room is elegantly decorated with calming shades of blue and cream, creating a serene and relaxing environment. Curling up in the comfy bed, I feel a wave of peace wash over me, grateful for this peaceful retreat to relax and recharge. This cosy retreat truly feels like a home away from home.
⁂
As I push open the doors to the main guild building, Elysia's warm smile welcomes me, while other guild members bustle around.
Elysia's warm smile is a welcome sight, easing the tension that had been building within me since our earlier conversation.
"Ah, Sora, you're here!"
"Yeah, I'm here."
I reply, returning her smile and offering a nod of my head in response.
Elysia's gaze softens as she watches me, her eyes conveying a blend of sympathy and understanding in their depths.
"How are you settling in?"
"It's... it's fine."
A moment of hesitation lingers as I grapple with the words, trying to convey the jumble of thoughts swirling within me. The refuge she gave me is a peaceful escape from my past, and I appreciate it.
"Would you like to join us in meeting the rest of our members?
Meeting new people who may evolve into friends or allies stirs a blend of excitement and apprehension within me. Despite the nerves, I understand that forging connections is vital for embracing my fresh start in this unfamiliar world. Honestly, I'm still uncertain about opening up and forming connections with others at this moment.
Even though I have doubts, I nod, curiosity ultimately getting the best of me.
I'm taken to a massive, elegant dining room of some sort, where a long, beautifully set table draped in a dark green fabric stretches out before me. I notice the walls adorned with captivating artwork and the soft glow of delicate crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, casting a gentle, warm glow into the soft ambience in the room.
The plush chairs beckon me to take a seat, signalling a chance to engage with the guild members already seated and perhaps anticipating my arrival. The scent of a delectable meal flows across the air, enticing my senses and making my stomach rumble with hunger.
"So... Who's he?" An intimidating guy with obsidian-black hair asks Elysia, his intense gaze fixed on her.
"He's our newest member. Sora Mugenshi—
"He looks weak."
A taller, even more intimidating man with blazed crimson hair beside the black-head guy declared.
"Oh? And I assume our little chat about interrupting me has slipped your mind, Draven?"
Elysia's welcoming grin doesn't fade, but her voice is filled with chilling intensity and displeasure that I have never encountered before.
Draven stammers as he tries to come up with an excuse, but Elysia's glare silences him instantly.
"As I was saying, Sora is our newest member, and I'd like you to get to know each other."
Her gaze pivots around the entire room, speaking to all the girls and guys here, and there's probably about ten of them.
"Hmm... Alright!"
A girl with a singular horn protruding from her forehead speaks up, breaking the tense mood that has settled over the room.
I take a step closer to Elysia.
"There's only ten people here...? Shouldn't there be more for a guild of this size?"
"Someone's always busy. There are about ninety-four people in this guild. Some members are out on missions, others are taking a break, and a few are attending to personal matters. It's common for the guild to have a fluctuating number of members present at any given time."
I nod in response right before the horn girl approaches me with two other men.
She introduces herself as Narisa, the guild's lead strategist. She explains that they were not expecting any new members to join today, but they are always open to welcoming new recruits.
"Well, I appreciate the warm welcome. But, uhh... who are you two?"
"That's Teris and Yasuyoshi. They're both experienced members of our guild. Teris is our top archer, and Yasuyoshi is a talented healer. We're excited to have you join us."
I smile, feeling a sense of belonging in this diverse group of adventurers. But Narisa's voice sounds a bit threatening... Or is it just my years of bullying messing with my perception?
Elysia waves me off with a slightly wrinkled smile, making me uneasy.
As Narisa walks away, I can't shake the feeling that something isn't quite right. I glance over at Teris and Yasuyoshi, who both give me vaguely reassuring smiles.
"Don't worry, Sora. We'll take good care of you."
Teris says, patting me on the back. Despite their comforting words, I can't help but feel a sense of unease lingering in the air.
What kind of "matters" could Elysia possibly have to attend to that would make her act so strangely? And why does Narisa's presence make me feel so on edge?
... Why am I so paranoid...?
