Text Nights

First Message:

Hey, do you want to be friends?

I slid the gray mobile down my pocket, the small handheld Nokia's waning glow illuminating it.

I walked the autumn path, the worn stone tiles shifting in the soft mud. Leave of rust and gold fell around me, but I left them behind with every step, ignoring their point brilliance.

Do you want to go to the mall?

I stepped off the cracked stones, and made my way across the empty dustpan that was the car park, towards the mall, a dusty, ramshackle work of cold concrete.

Haha. How about some ice cream?

I waited at a empty counter, pressing lightly on the calling bell. The ring wavered, dying slowly, all the while passing through the empty hallways. Puddles of liquid sat in empty trays, rancid and bitter. I dipped a finger into a familiar white liquid and tasted it.

Vanilla.

You want to take a walk?

I stepped through the rooftop gardens. Stagnant pools of water were swarmed with flies, and gnarled vines strangled the greenery.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

I looked up to the sky.

Grey, weary, and grumbling. It was tired, even more than I was.

How about lunch? Do you take lunch? It's good for your health, you know?

I sat at the diner.

Old neon sat over the dusty counter, and I ran a finger across the dust settled on the marble top. I spun on the bar room seats, listening to the constant squeal of the joints. The hollow screaming echoed through the diner.

And rust poured from groaning taps.

Hey, hey. Lets go to that corner.

I stepped to a dusty board. Handprints, big and small, lined the wall in a flush of colour. I raised my hand to one, covering the small red fingers, and clenched my fist.

The paint peeled, and tender red petals fell onto the torn carpet.

I'll see you again tomorrow, alright? Great!

I stood before a house.

And wept.
