As Sasha continued chanting, the room suddenly became colder leading to a chill running down my spine as the air seemed to vibrate with otherworldly energy. Her voice grew louder and more intense with each passing moment and I watched in awe as the mirror began to glow with ethereal light, while the blood droplet acted as a beacon in guiding the mirror to highlight Zach's fate lines, which now carried the same ethereal light as the mirror on the table.
"Shoath Oafth, Mofthar Pleuhze" "Shoath Oafth, Mofthar Pleuhze"
There seemed to be other fate lines present within the room, just as Sasha said, but they looked more like a spider's web when compared to Zach's which reminded me of the various types of lights one would see during the holidays back on Earth. However, the other lines would fade away as soon as they left the vicinity of the mirror making it pretty much impossible to figure out which line belonged to who. And this wasn't a problem per se but I would be lying if I said I wasn't curious about my own 'fate lines' now that I know such a thing actually exists.
Focusing back on Zach's fate lines led to me witnessing a peculiar event that had been taking place beneath the glow from the mirror and lines themselves. At first glance, it seemed as if the drop of blood was being consumed by the mirror since there was clearly less blood present on the surface, but after giving it a thorough stare for a few seconds I realized that the blood was simply being spread out along the surface of said mirror, creating various lines and shapes that looked awfully familiar on first glance.
"Fanck Yhuv, Mofthar err... Vee Andah" "Fanck Yhuv, Mofthar. Vee Andah" Sasha repeated this chant a few more times as the glow within the room began to fade, allowing pretty much everyone in the room to gasp in relief for one reason or another as the room returned to its original lukewarm temperature from before.
Yet, I still felt that magical energy that was still present within the room as the blood spread slowly across the mirror. This lasted for around thirty seconds or so before the blood in the center of the mirror had been used up, only leaving behind enough to create an even smaller blood-red image of what looked to be a yin-yang symbol except it had stars where one would usually find circles. I couldn't help but wonder aloud once I spotted this image because of the disbelief I felt when replaying this entire scene in my head...
"But why a yin-yang symbol of all of the things?" I said this in a pretty low tone, but unfortunately, the room was practically dead silent already, making me sound as if I was yelling.
"SHH--" "Shut your--" Zach and Rose both almost jumped down my throat after my slip up but caught themselves in the process which caused their faces to morph in fear at my reaction.
I honestly didn't even hear the duo since I was more focused on the symbol and its significance in this world. But even if I did hear them, I would've probably let them off easily still because I was the one who broke the only rule Sasha put before us after all. However, Sasha did hear the duo and quickly diverted the conversation toward the results of the ritual in order to spare them from whatever imaginative fate she felt I had in store for them.
"The first half of this ritual is finished so everyone can speak freely, but keep in mind that the spirit of the mother may still be nearby so we should try to be on our best behaviors..." Sasha stated while cutting her eyes at the duo.
"Well no disrespect to them, but it doesn't matter if we pretend or not since they are able to see our fate anyways. Pretending to be someone else in front of your mother has never succeeded, at least not where I am from..." I said while thinking back to Earth, wondering if that planet had such a being.
I mean one could argue that the many religions back on Earth had a deity or divine beings similar to this 'spirit' so I guess there were many but honestly, it's beyond my pay grade so just ignore me.
"Tut... I suppose the lord is right but try not to act like an ass if you can help it... *sigh* Now I know why my teacher started graying so earlier." Sasha said while rubbing her temples.
"But since we have completed the first part of the ritual, I can now attempt to alter the specifics of the oath you agreed to, Zach since the mother has written it out for us on the surface of the mirror. I first have to read the contents of the oath to alter your oath--" Sasha began explaining to Zach how she was able to alter his oath but I had completely blocked out their voices once I took a second glance at what was written on the mirror.
'I, Zach, do solemnly swear upon joining the upper echelon of the university to abide by the oath of secrecy. I will not share the resources, knowledge, or information that I acquire during my time here with those who have not been deemed worthy of such knowledge. I understand that failure to uphold this oath will result in severe consequences, including the forfeiture of my spirit to the abyss, and I willingly accept these consequences. So help me, Mother.'
I read this over once and then a second time just to make sure I wasn't going crazy. I'll say this once again just in case you didn't catch it... I CAN READ THE 'LANGUAGE OF THE FUCKING MOTHER'!!
I mean the language seems to just be plain ol' English so I guess it wasn't all that impressive, but according to Sasha, there aren't any people fluent in the language alive so you can just consider me big-brained from now on. But I digress...
"I should then be able to ask the mother to remove a few keywords that I have recognized over the years which will alter your oath--" Sasha was still in the middle of explaining herself when I cut her off once again.
"Sorry to cut you off once again, Sasha, but I think I can we can just remove the oath altogether now that I know we are working with English..." I said while reading the oath to myself a few more times.
As soon as I finished doing so, I noticed that the room had gone dead silent once again, which in turn caused me to look up in order to see what had happened. Unfortunately, I didn't notice that the energy that was mentioned earlier within the room had suddenly spiked the moment I said 'English' since such a rapid change could be perceived by people who are attuned to such things such as Sasha, whose eyes immediately lit up with that vibrant red color for before.
Or folks like my twin cousins, Ash and Bell, who had the same reaction as Sasha here except their eyes had different colors within them. One was a dark, almost emerald-green color, and the other was a light blue color that resembled an ocean. However, since this was taking place two stories above me I had no knowledge of this revelation.
After looking up, I was met with stares from literally everyone in the room including my three cousins, Zoe, Kai, and Luca who still stood near the door behind me. Zoe was the first person to speak, breaking the ten seconds of silence that hung over the room.
"Now that we are working with what? I didn't catch that last part." Zoe asked leading to Kai and Luca following her up with responses of their own.
"I thought I was going insane for a second." "Right? Use your words properly, Rallo." Luca and Kai said while scratching their respective heads.
"What? English?" I asked while turning my head to look towards my cousins.
"Yeah... 'Eunglushe', or whatever the hell you just said. What is that?" Zoe asked me while stumbling over the word in question.
"Well evidently, it's the language of the mother that was lost all those years ago... I should have made the connection earlier when Sasha was speaking but, and no offense to you Sasha, but you were butchering it..." I said while letting out a little chuckle that echoed throughout the room which had gone silent once again before turning to look at Sasha, who was the but of my joke which failed miserably.
This allowed me to see the shock which had been present on her face since I uttered that one simple word. She seemed to be at a loss for words as her lips and brows twitched with confusion, a bit of anger, but mostly pure astonishment.
Zach of all people decided that now was his time to shine once again as he hurriedly spoke up in defense of Sasha, even though the woman herself hadn't said anything yet.
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
"And no offense to you Lord, but you can not possibly be suggesting that you can do what a certified arcanist such as Miss Sasha herself can not. That is.. that is simply ludicrous!!" Zach said in hopes of gaining favors with Sasha, a plan which was doomed to fail from the get-go, but he certainly tried it nonetheless.
"None taken... But yes, I am suggesting just that. Although I didn't catch it at first, I now know what Sasha was asking the mother earlier, which was to show the oath you signed. She said 'Show Oath, Mother Please' though I probably would've added a few more words in there... Probably something like 'Can you show the oath signed by the dickhead Zach over there?'... Oh, and it's Thank you, Mother, with a T, not an F. Well 'Mother' has a T and an H which sometimes sounds like an F depending on who is saying it." I said chuckling at my own jokes which completely bombed once again given that no one reacted to the lines, not even Sasha, who instead just stood there looking as if I said I was god himself.
Well I did hear a slight noise which could have been considered a giggle but it sounded like it came from above me but I disregarded it since there was only a roof above us. Other than that though, there was not a single noise besides the occasional tap on the window from insects hitting said surface.
"Uhhh... Are y'all good? Why the hell is everyone so quiet all of a sudden?" I asked while looking back towards my cousins, who stood there looking just as confused as they were earlier.
"We should be asking you that... Taking Sasha's reaction into consideration, I guess we can assume your words to be true. Okay, you can understand the language of the mother, and clearly, you can speak it as well... But that still leaves us with the questions of where, when, or why neither... Therefore, we should be asking you, are you good?" Zoe said stepping towards me, leaving Kai and Luca staring at both of us.
I lifted my brow in confusion before realizing my mistake which was admitting that I know a language that had literally been lost to time, with absolutely no explanation as to how I came across such information.
"Err... Yeah, I'm fine. Uhh... But I don't think I can really answer where I learned this language, or when, hell, nor why for that matter although that one might be the easiest to explain. Well not right now at least since it will only further complicate a situation that doesn't need any more complication. Maybe in the future, but for now, I simply can't answer your questions. All that matters right now is that I can understand and speak this 'language of the mother'." I said meeting the eyes of my cousin Zoe.
"... You know what, fine. But if you think this is the last time we will speak about this, then you are just as childish as your excuses." Zoe said while pointing her finger in my face, almost poking my eye out a couple of times, which caused me to flinch away from her... That was the only reason, by the way, I swear I wasn't intimidated or anything like that...
"*sigh* Sasha, how would one go about removing the oath since that is a possibility now. I assume that I should just ask the mother to remove it just like how you asked her to show it... How wrong am I this time?" I asked while taking a step away from my cousin before turning towards the woman in question.
However, once I made eye contact with Sasha, I noticed a look that resembled that of a prospector who had just struck gold. Meaning, there was a lot of excitement and just as much worry present in her expression. I also spotted a bit of intrigue here and there as she scanned my face for signs of deception I assume. I can only guess that this was an instinctual thing for her given her background, but this obviously wasn't the case since I am clearly just as surprised as she is.
Hell, who could have guessed that the 'ancient language that was lost to time' was English of all things?
"This-- How-- *sigh* You are something else that is for sure... I am with Zoe on this one though, this is definitely not the end of this conversation... But in regard to your question, I simply do not have an answer since my family never had access to such knowledge. As I said earlier the language was thought to be lost, but it seems that is not the case..." Sasha said while studying my expression.
Obviously, I wasn't happy with this revelation which showed on my face but this didn't deter me really since I felt that my guess was probably correct given that Sasha was able to get the oath to be shown even with her broken English. It seems to me that language serves as a medium just like the scryer's mirror or whatever it was called, making intent the most important factor in the equation.
"That is... Well, it ain't what I expected to say the least. Nonetheless, I feel that we can still attempt to remove the oath altogether since the mother does most of the work anyways. I mean you were able to get her to show us the oath with just a couple of words that were strung together after all, so it surely won't be too big of an ask for her to remove it. Just watch..." I said while turning towards the mirror which sat on the table.
"Wait--""HEY--" Sasha step forward to stop me but Zoe moved in front of her, showing where her loyalties lay if things went wrong, and there was also Zach on the other side of the table who tried to reach for the mirror only to be grabbed by the officers who stood around him.
I ignored all of this like I wasn't the source of it all as I placed my dominant hand, which was the left hand by the way, over the mirror as if it was giving off heat. And yes, I did this gesture simply because it felt like the right thing to do in the situation, nothing more, nothing less.
"Mother Spirit of this planet... Or whatever your actual name is. Most people simply call you Mother, but that feels a bit lackluster to lil ol' me... But what do I know? Anyhow, I am Rallo, just your average human down here with wants, needs, and the like... I have a favor to ask on behalf of a guy named Zach. Please do me a solid and null the oath of secrecy he signed with that university. I mean he ain't even a part of their upper echelon anymore for god's sake. Hell, I'm not even sure it even exists at this point... Oh! And Thank you, by the way, err Mother..." I spoke with the efficiency one would have if they grew up speaking any language.
It really wasn't anything to brag about, to be honest with you... Hell, I had twenty-two years on Earth to learn it so the fact I haven't mastered it yet says more about me than the language. But I digress...
As soon as I finished speaking, the mirror underneath my hand lit up like a spotlight with the same ethereal light that appeared when Sasha 'called on the mother' earlier. Or at least it seemed to be the same light until there was a sudden change in the luminosity, which appeared to increase irrespective of the temperature and the size of the mirror.
I honestly thought there had been some kind of mistake but when I turned my head to face Sasha, I was met with a sight that made me think otherwise. This is because Sasha, the unshakeable, stone-faced pillar of my current 'power', was shivering like a weak branch in the wind while staring around halfway up the beam of light visible to us all. Unfortunately, when I attempted to follow her line of sight, I failed to see anything other than the beam of light, which had stabilized for the time being while looking more like a megalithic light pillar than the puny beam from before.
Seeing nothing but the aforementioned light pillar, I swiveled my head back toward Sasha in order to ask what she looking at. But instead of seeing her standing like before, I was met with her kneeling on the floor while keeping an anxious yet slightly fearful expression on her face the entire time.
"Sasha?!... Are you okay? What happened?" I asked while reaching the same hand I used earlier toward the woman since it was closer.
However, right as my hand made contact with Sasha's shoulder, I felt the tiny sting of an electrostatic discharge shoot through said hand causing me to recoil as was the instinctual thing to do. This discharge had to be caused by magic though since there were no plastic, rubber, or synthetic fibers with which to generate and hold a static charge, but that still leaves the question of how... But that's something we will have to figure out later.
Right now, I am more interested in the changes happening within the pillar of light above the mirror. This was because of the flashes of various hues that I caught out of the corners of my eyes. Luckily for me, these flashes were witnessed by everyone else as well as they gasped in awe or shock depending on who the person was.
I quickly turned my head to face the pillar of light once again in order to get a full view of what was happening above the mirror but was met with a blinding light that caused everyone, myself included, to close and or cover their eyes in order to block the retina frying rays. The strangest thing though was Sasha not reacting in the slightest as the blinding light washed over us, or that seemed to be the case from what I could see through the small space between both of my hands.
Instead, she maintained visual contact with whatever it was that she was currently seeing. Though she was clearly using some kind of magic to shield her eyes given the intense red glow that was present around her upper face region.
Fortunately, these changes didn't last too long, with the extremely bright light receding after around thirty seconds or so leaving an ethereal figure hovering in its wake, who glowed with the same light that appeared earlier when Sasha started this whole ritual.
"Mo-- Mother Spirit!!" *bump* Sasha yelled shakily while dropping to her knees, perfectly encapsulating the image I already had in my mind of someone worshiping a divine being who has come down for a visit.
*bump* *bump* *bump* x15
The sources of these noises came from the number of people across the table from us who could obviously see the figure floating at least a foot above the mirror, but I didn't hear the same coming from my cousins behind me who were clearly getting the same view as Sasha.
Thinking this led to me looking over my shoulder toward Zoe, Kai, and Luca only to see them staring back at me with fear in their eyes for some reason or another. I wanted to ask them what was wrong, but I was cut off by someone tapping on my other shoulder which was currently in my blindside. This obviously caused me to swivel my head back around quickly as was instinctual to do so, however, neither my bodily instincts from this world nor my mental instincts from Earth knew how to react to what I saw once my eyes adjusted to sight in front of me.
Hell, how would you react when put face to face with a literal god or whatever this was supposed to be?
