'On to our next news, Tragedy struck at a small town when a local young man killed in a motorcycle crash last night. The identity of the young man is still unknown as the police still trying to identify the victim'
"Liam looks at this, that accident happened 3 kilometers away from here. It's the same route you use to get home," said Lily while still watching the news.
I grab the remote from the counter and switch the channel to something else.
"Liam?!" Lily exclaim.
"No TV, we still on our shift," I said, as I continue to wipe the counter with the rag in my other hand.
"Aww. Come on, Liam, it's my last day here," said Lily.
She leans on the counter and removes the pin that holds her wine-colored hair up into a bun. her locks of hair fall on top of her shoulder and brush her neck. When my eyes met her big blue eyes, I was astounded by its beauties but I know this is all part of her trick.
She always uses her eyes to get me to do what she wants. It's not gonna work because this time I'm only gonna look at her forehead and avoid her eyes.
I can see her thick pink lips pouted as she realized, that I am avoiding her eyes.
"Liam! Nobody is here, except the two us. The rain outside is preventing any customer coming in beside even Mr. Krux is not here" said Lily.
I roll my eyes as I keep on wiping the Diner counter. We have been working here together for 8 months. Lily is usually a hard worker, but when it a rainy day, she becomes lazy and she will try everything to avoid work. Which cause me to do all the work if she gets her ways.
"Nope," I said, with my feet planted on the floor.
No more, Mr nice guys.
Lily still continue to pout at first, but change when she let out a strange giggle.
"Are you sure about that?" Said Lily.
When I look at her, my eyes widen, and I gulped the saliva in my throat. Lily is unbuttoning the top half of her work uniform revealing deep cleavage. That gap between her breast is what any man sought after; it leads to paradise. I could see her black lace bra not the one with a simple design. But the one that usually featured in a Victorian secret magazine.
"I..I..I.aaaaaaa..hm..ohh" I let out a series of incoherent noise as my gaze was somehow pulled toward the breast area.
"Now will you give me the remote?" Ask Lily as she licks the upper part of her lips.
"Oh-kay!" I stuttered, sliding the remote toward Lily.
Lily smile and let out a giggle. She grabs the remote and turns to face the TV again, switching the channel to her preferred one.
My heart beat faster and I could feel my blood pumping faster than usual.
"I'm going to the kitchen to grab some napkins!" I said and head to the kitchen.
I crash into the sink, turning the valve; I let the water flows down to the drain. Taking some water with my hand I wash my face with it. I could feel my face getting warmer despite washing my self with cold water.
Focus Liam, I know you have a crush on Lily but can't you keep your cool when she shows you a little bit of her skin?
Of course not! It, not a just little bit skin, it's her hmmm, stop- please stop! Crap! Now its stuck in my mind.
Not like it's a bad thing right?
Of course it a bad thing, how am I gonna keep my face straight when I talk to her after this!
Then I realized something so bad had happened down below. Looking down I saw the bulge in the middle of my pant around the crotch area. A Tokyo tower is erecting itself in my pants.
OH SHIT!
"Liam?! Are you okay in there?" Ask Lily as her voice get worried.
Oh shit! Shit! Shit!.
"I-m fine, don't worry about me!" I replied.
"Are you sure?!" Ask Lily again.
"Yeah, everything okay in here?" I reassure.
Okay quick! Think of something else, Pineapple! Mouth Everest! Spongebob!
Okay, it seems to be working; as the bulge getting smaller.
Tom Hiddleston! Wait! What?
The bulge getting bigger.
What? now I getting confused, stop it!
Okay... Doritos and Gatorade hmm.
The bulge finally went away when I think of those two things. I let out a breath of relieved.
Placing both of my hands under the faucet, I gather some water in my hand before splashing my face with it. Then I wipe the water off with a clean cloth.
I walk out of the kitchen after letting another breath out to calm myself.
"What wrong with you? You look flustered" said, Lily, as she looks at me, letting out a small smile; her blouse fully button up.
"I'm not looking flustered! You are!" I blurted out.
"What?" Said Lilly, letting out a small chuckle,
"There, no need to be defensive here" Lily continued.
Lily went back to watching the TV while I went back to wiping the already clean counter. Looking at the reflection, I could see my frustrated face looking back at me.
'You need to tell her!' My mind shout.
"Lily, can I ask you a question?" I said; my hand stop and look at her; she still watching the TV.
"What is it?" Lily ask.
"Why do you want to get out of this town so much? Do you hate living here?" I ask.
"Starting with the heavy question are we?" said Lily.
"It's fine if you don't want to answer it," I said.
"It's okay," said Lily.
Her eyes wander to the heavy rain pouring outside, her face shows an expression like she in deep thought.
"I don't actually hate the town, I love this town. I was born here. It's a great town filled with nice people, but sometimes I felt like something is missing in my life," said Lily.
"Something...missing?" I let out.
"Yeah, something missing. Something inside of me that isn't complete yet. That why I thought if I leave this town maybe I could find it"Lily continued.
"While we on the subject of talking about our personal lives. How about you? I know you not just some ordinary waiter, Mr. Krux told me that you are a Harvard dropout, What happened there?" Ask Lily.
My eyes wander up into the ceiling, as I remember what exactly happens there. I can hear a faint beeping sound in a distance, my hands shake a bit.
Digging my fingers into my palm, I was about to answer Lily question when the whole Diner starts to shakes. When a thundering roar happens so close that it causes a blackout of the entire Diner.
I heard Lily scream in the darkness.
"Are you okay?!" I ask.
"No, no, I'm fine it just... the thunder scare me earlier, it okay," said Lily.
Taking out my smartphone; I swipe the flashlight button and the camera light up. The flashlight shines the dark Diner when I move the light to shine on Lily, she was gone.
"Lily?!" I called out, but no one answer.
"Ha Ha very funny, you can come out now," I said.
I look around the room trying to find Lily but fail to do so. I didn't even hear her footsteps when she left. Lighting struck far away with a thunderous roar and a flash of light that shine the entire Diner.
Then, I saw it outside of the front door; a black misty shape human, standing in the rain looking straight at me from afar.
"Lily!" I yelled out.
Suddenly, a hand snuck up behind me causing me to open my eyes. I turn around and saw Lily standing in behind of me. A look of worry on her face while she holds her own smartphone in her hand.
"Are you okay?" asked Lily.
I turn my head to the front door, and the black mist shape human is gone; almost like it was all a dream. I turn my head back to Lily and her expression changed from confused to concerned.
"What is going on?" asked Lily.
"I...Don't know, I thought... It was nothing" I said.
"Are you sure?" asked Lily.
"Yeah, yeah... Yeah!" I assure her.
"Okay... Then. what are we gonna do now? The whole diner blackout, it's dark and I'm getting hungry" Lily said, as she leans her back on the counter.
"I have an idea!" I exclaim.
"Huh?" Lily let out.
"Come with me I need your help," I said while heading toward the kitchen.
"Okay...sure," said Lily; following me from behind while lighting the way.
=========================
"Hold the ladder Lily, please make sure I don't fall" I command.
The reason why I'm standing on a ladder is to help me reach the circuit breaker on top of the wall. Opening the circuit breaker panel, I examine the contents and flipping the many switches to see if the circuit breaker still work. Unfortunately, the circuit breaker is fried. I let out a sigh.
"What ups?" ask Lily from below.
"The circuit breaker is fried" I answer.
"so what we gonna do now?" ask Lily again.
"Grab the toolbox form Mr. Krux office!" I order.
Lily cleared her throat; when I look down. I could see Lily annoy face as she waits for the magic word.
"Please.." I said.
"That's better," said Lily.
After a couple of minutes, Lily brought me the toolbox, I ask her to hand me the screwdriver and she gave it to me, then I start working on the circuit breaker.
"I didn't know that you an electrician" Lily chimed from below.
"I'm not" I replied.
"So where do you learned to fix broken breaker?" asked Lily.
"Harvard... Electrical engineering" I answer.
"You still haven't answered my question earlier, so what happens?" asked Lily.
I let the question simmer at first while I kept on working on the circuit breaker. I try to remember what happens during the last semester of my study at Harvard.
"It's nothing extraordinary about what happens to me" I avoid her question.
"Come on, I answer your question, why not answer my question?" asked Lily.
I let out a sigh, "On the last month of my semesters, I caught my girlfriend cheating on me with a fellow classmate. My heart was shattered, I had to dump her. My heart was too broken, I couldn't piece it back together it causes me to lose focus, It affected my study and I fail the final exam." I answer her question, the pain resurfaces in my heart as I remember the reason why she left me.
"I'm sorry, I ask" Lily apologized.
"Don't worry it isn't your fault that she betrays me. do you want to know why she cheated on me?" I said.
"What?" Lily ask.
"It because I was too focused on my study, I didn't give her enough attention. She felt alone and I wasn't doing a good job of being there for her," I said.
"Maybe she right, I do tend to focus on one thing that I forgot everything around me," I said.
"Do you miss her?" Lily ask.
"A long time ago, but now it just a distance memory," I said.
"You know this is the longest time we talked about our personal lives during our time working together," said Lily.
"Aren't you sad that you leaving your family behind?" I ask.
"It is sad for me, I will surely miss them so much but even a baby bird needs to leave her nest someday," said Lily.
"Hey, why did you work here?" asks Lily.
"Because of you" I answer.
"What?" Lily let out.
"You probably have forgotten the first time we met," I said.
"What do you mean?" asked Lily.
"I think I got it!" I exclaim; as I reconnect the wire with another wired.
The whole Diner light ups again like a Christmas tree and I could hear Lily cheers from down below. I also join her cheers. Suddenly, my screwdriver connects with an open wire, I was shocked and thrown back across the room. I fall to the floor on my back and everything went blurry. I could hear two male voice speaking to each other,
As my sight and my hearing adjusted and becoming clearer. I could hear Lily voice beside, I look and saw her on her knees beside me.
"Are you okay?" asked Lily; I could see her smile to calm me down but her eyes say otherwise; she is worried about me.
I cough first; "I'm fine nothing broken, but let's not do that again" I joked.
"Of course not," said Lily; when her eyes wander to my hands.
"Liam your hands!" exclaim lily.
I raise my hand to see what the commotion is; I was shocked to see my palm was burned from the electric shock earlier. I wince as the pain begins to set in.
"Let me get the first aid kit, you stay here!' Lily said and went to the kitchen.
I stand up and walk toward the booth of the Diner; taking a seat there, I wait for Lily to come. After a couple minute, Lily entered the room with the first aid kit box in her hands. She hurried to me and took a seat facing me in the booth.
"Let me look!" Lily ordered; I extended my burned hands to her and begins to examine my burns.
She opens the first aid kit, start to search for medicine and bandage she could use. After getting what she needed, she grabs my hand gently and brings it closer to her. I felt her soft, smooth skin while her beautiful eyes focus on my burns. She wipes the medicine on my burns, I wince a little at the sudden pain.
"I'm sorry" She apologized.
Tell her now!
Tell her that you love her!
Before I know it my injured hand is already wrapped in bandage and Lily has already finish storing all the medical items back in the box.
"There you go. All better now" She said; closing the first aid box.
"Thank you. I didn't know, you know first aid?" I said.
She let out a small laugh, "My dad forced force me to take a class on first aid, he said it might be useful one day" said Lily.
"Well, his right" I answer.
"Yeah... I hate it when he's right," said Lily.
We both look out of the window; looking at the heavy rain that seems to be endless. While we were gaze outside, melancholy begin to creep up on us. A sudden pain shook my hand, I wince a little bit. The pain was like a needle stabbing my hand, but I can withstand it.
"You took this job because of me?" asked Lily.
"Yeah, it was the first time I came into this town. It happens on a rainy day, same as this one except back then the diner is crowded with tons customers," I said.
"What did I do to get you to take this job?" asked Lily.
"Nothing special, but you make my whole day much brighter," I said.
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
"What exactly did I do?" asked Lily.
"Back then, you were kind of a klutz. Spilling coffee everywhere, taking the wrong order and always deliver the wrong food," I said while letting out a small laugh as I reminisce.
Lily mouth pout; "I was just starting out you know" Said Lily.
"I know," I said.
"But I didn't remember doing something special for anyone," Lily said.
"Well that it, you were being yourself. Living free without a care in a world, no haunted past, no pain from a breakup. I know you been through pain in your past but you didn't let a single one drag you down, you kept on living in the moment. I admire that about you," I said.
"That awfully descriptive for me being myself," said Lily; her eyebrow raised.
"But how come I didn't remember you?" Lily said.
"Because I was wearing a hoodie that time," I said; covering my head with my hands to emulate how I look with a hood on.
"Ohh, I remember you now, the moody guy who seems really rapey looking. I was really scared of you, you were like no smile at all and glaring at everybody," said Lily.
"What I didn't notice that! I was kind in the aftermath of the breakup" I said
"No wonder you look like that," said Lily.
"What do you mean rapey looking?" I ask.
"Well, you look like someone who... How do I say it nicely, criminally looking? Don't worry, I know you would never do any crime except being buzzkill sometimes" Lily said.
"Well thanks for putting it nicely, I guess? But what do you mean a buzzkill?" I ask.
"Well you could let loose sometimes," said Lily.
"What do you mean, I'm pretty loose," I said; Lily let out a laugh.
"You walk onto that yourselves," said Lily; I let out a groan.
Lily turn her head and look behind me, "Now it's my turn, I know how you could let loose." Said lily with a smirk.
======================
Lily get up from her seat and walk pass by me, heading somewhere behind me; I turn my head and saw a retro jukebox at the end of the room. The jukebox shines a brightly color light like a circus light with many records inside of it.
Since when do we have a jukebox.
She bends her body to look for a perfect tune to lighten up the mood. After pressing a couple button, the jukebox moves it hand to pick a record and places it on the record player. The jukebox begins to play a song.
At first, the music was foreign to me, but as I listen to it more. I recognize the music more and more until a name pop in my mind.
Barns Courtney - Hellfire.
Lily slowly tap her feet to the rhythm and swaying her hips. When the music kick on the high gear, she begins to move her body, violently matching the rhythm. I could see the freedom of her movement mirroring how she lives her life. Her wine-colored hairs flutter as she shakes and sways her head. The way she dances was intoxicating and somehow drawing me in.
She looks at me, gesturing her hand toward me, she wants me to come and join her. How could I say no? Even if my body still sore and hurt, I push through it.
As I stand close to her while swaying my body carefully. She places both of her hands on my shoulder, and pull me closer until her breasts press against my chest. Then she grab my uninjured hand and place it on her buttocks, I felt its softness and firm. she began to sway her hip and intoxicating me even further with her dance.
"Li-Lily?" I mutter.
She places her finger to my lips, silencing me. She turns her body now her butt pressed against my crotch while she sways it against mine. My eyes widen and I quickly try to think of something else to calm my inner lust.
Oh my god!, I scream in my mind.
Eiffel Tower. Shit wrong one.
Einstein theory of relativity.
Suddenly, I grunt in pain, as a massive pain run through my brain, it's like my head is hit by something really large. An image of a tree foliage and night sky with a heavy droplet of rain flash through my eyes, I blink my eyes and it's gone.
"Liam? are you okay?' Lily asks worriedly.
"My head, never mind. Just a little headache" I replied.
I notice Lily has stopped dancing. She looks at me with both of her blue eyes, a small frown on her lips showing sign of her worry.
"Are you sure?" Lily ask again.
"Yeah it is gone now," I said as the pain finally subsided.
"I should have taken it easy with the dance," Lily said.
"I mean the pain was worth it though, to see you dance like that," I jest.
Lily let out a giggle and lean her head against my shoulder, as she did that the jukebox changes its music to a slow and vocal song.
"Care for a dance?" I said.
Lily looked back at me and let out an agreeable smile. She then places both of her hands on both of my shoulders then I wrap my hand around her waist and we begin to slowly sway our body left to right. Matching the slow rhythm.
We slow dance to Ellie Goulding - Dead in The Waters.
"Liam?" Lily let out.
"Yeah?" I ask back to her.
"I'm sorry, that I forget about you." Lily apologize.
"You mean the first day I met you? It's okay, I'm not mad about it" I said.
"N-no aahh..." Lily said then let out a sigh.
"Lily?" I ask.
"I'm not apologizing to you because I forgot the first time I met you," Lily said.
"Then why are you apologizing?" I ask.
"It's complicated, just forget what I said," Lily said.
There was a short silence between us.
"I forgive you," I said.
Lily let out a small laugh.
"You dummy, you don't even know why I apologize. How could you forgive me," Lily said.
"I just did. Nevertheless, I forgive you, no matter what you did, I will always forgive you" I said.
"That sweet and stupid at the same time," she said and hit the side of my biceps.
"Ou-ouch" I let out.
"I'm sorry," Lily said.
"I forgive you like I said before, I always forgive you," I said and let out a laugh.
Lily lips form a genuinely happy smile, but I can't help myself feeling something else from that smile. A deep longing and guilt.
"I'm just a normal girl, who want to live a happy life," Lily mutter under her breath.
"Liam, there is another reason why I want to get out of this town," Lily said.
"What is it?" I ask.
"When I was a teenager, my mom passed away because of a heart cancer," Lily said.
"I'm sorry to hear that," I said.
"It's okay.."Lily said.
"I remember on her deathbed, the last thing she ever said to me is, 'live a full life'," Lily said.
"That why I want to get out of this town, to live a full life just like she wanted me to. My dad said it a stupid reason to get out of this town, does my reason sound stupid to you?" Lily ask.
This is it, Liam. What you said right now could make her stay here with you, but how could I be the one that prevents her from achieving her goals? I want her to stay with me, but I don't want to chain her wings, goddammit what should I said!
This is stupid, why I debating about this, I know what the correct answer is.
"It's sounds... like a perfectly good reason to get out of this town. Screw what your dad said. It's your damn life and you are the one behind the wheel" I said, my heart beat painfully.
"Thank you..." Lily said as she smiles at me.
"You know, one of few things I gonna miss when I leave this town is you, I couldn't have asked a better friend," Lily said.
Her word pierces me like an arrow, now is a good time just said it! Say I love you!, SAID IT!.
"Lily? can I say—" I was about o confess, when one of the diner telephone rings, interrupting my words.
"Wait here, let me get that," Lily said after letting me go.
She walks toward the telephone and picks it up. She begins to talk about something serious with the other person behind the phone.
I begin to curse myself and the world in my head.
I let out a long sigh and took a seat at the edge of the booth.
This is why you not gonna get her! Why can't you just say those three words to her? It not like it the end of the world, she gonna leave and find another man, that better than you and what do you get? You get nothing because you just can't confess to her like a normal person.
Oh F you brain, thank for the motivation, it not that easy okay?
Yeah, yeah, keep on complaining chum.
I notice outside of the Diner that the rain has finally shown sign of slowing down. She gonna leave... and I'm going to be alone again.
"Liam?" Lily ask.
"Yeah?" I ask back.
"Mr. Krux said that we should get home as soon as we have a chance because he said that the storm going to get worse from here," Lily said.
I let out another sigh.
"Also my dad just calls and he is on his way here," Lily said.
"We should close down the Diner" suggested Lily.
"Your right" I agree.
Standing up from the booth and ready to close the Diner.
"I clean up the kitchen while you do the front," I said, walking toward the kitchen, with a sour face.
"Liam, whats wrong?" Lily ask.
"Nothing!" I said, entering the kitchen.
After 15 minutes of cleaning the kitchen and turning off the power switch. I was wiping the kitchen metal counter and I could see my reflection, as I look at the reflection, blood drip on the counter. I close my eyes as I open it again, the drop of blood has disappeared.
I toss the rag on the side and exit the kitchen. I saw Lily sitting at one of the booths wearing her normal cloth. A white t-shirt and blues jeans while gazing outside of the dinner. I walk past by her to the locker room and change my cloth.
I wear my leather jacket and black jeans, then I exit the locker room. With me, I carry my motorcycle helmet and place it on the table where Lily is sitting.
"What wrongs?" I ask.
"I don't know, it just sad that we have to leave" Lily mutter.
"It's not like I can't see you again, we can message together, send pictures to each other, live chat and stuff," I jest.
"You don't understand, Liam..." Lily said.
"What?" I joked.
Two headlights appear in the distant and getting closer to us.
"It's not something to joke about!" Lily fumed.
"Lily, why are you mad? It's not like this is the end" I said.
"IT IS!" Lily barked.
There was a long silence fell between us after Lily sudden lashed out. The two light stop revealing a pickup truck that Lily dad drive.
"We can't see each other after this!" Lily said, grabbing her bag and walk out of the doors.
I grab my motorcycle helmet and chase after her to the outside in the rain.
"What do you mean?!" I yelled back.
Lily stopped in her tracks.
"Don't you realize it yet? you and I are dead. Don't you remember and all of this is our last stop before we go to our places." Lily said.
"Dead? that can't be true, I mean I can still feel" I said.
"You have been dead for 12 years, Liam. You die in a motorcycle crash on a stormy day just like this one, on your way back home" Lily explained.
"But..how? I don't remember any of those things" I said.
"12 years?.." I said, suddenly, something warm flowing down my cheek.
I touch it and saw it blood that is dripping down, then I finally remember. I was driving back home when my front wheels slip off road and crash into a tree. I did die on that day. my whole body froze, I let go of my helmet and it falls on the wet ground.
The rain kept pouring on top of me, wetting my whole body.
"The news, the headache, the flashback... It was signed... To show me the truth" I mutter.
"Liam... I'm sorry, but I had to tell you" Lily said.
I look at Lily and realized that she is the same as me.
"How did you?..." I ask.
"Heart cancer... Just like my mom on my 39 birthday" Lily answer.
"39?" I ask.
"Yes Liam, 39 and I had two kids and a loving husband," Lily said.
"Then why are you here with me?" I ask.
"I don't know, I just don't know" Lily replied.
"I'm leaving... This last time we will ever meet, goodbye." Lily said, turning her body to face the pickup truck, she begins to walk toward it.
"WAIT!!!" I scream tears begin to form on the corner of my eyes.
Lily turned around, she looks at me her eyes redden as tear flowing down and mixing with the drop of rain.
Say it!
"I LOVE YOU!!" I yelled out at the top of my lungs.
Lily face turn into shocked as she hears my confession. She places her hand on her mouth while her eyes gaze toward me. I look at her trying to smile while tears flowing down from my eyes. I sniffled and walk toward her.
When I finally close to her, I reach out to her and embrace her with my arms. she returns my embrace.
"I didn't know..." Lily said.
"I did a good job of hiding it" I jest, sniffled a bit.
"If only things could be different..." Lily mutter.
"I don't care, just said it," I said.
"I love you too," Lily confessed.
"Those days that we spent together, I never realize my own feeling until the day you were gone," Lily said.
"I wonder did you manage to live your full life?" I ask.
"Yes. but I have only one regret. You" Lily answer.
"Do I get to kiss you?" I joke.
"Of course, dummy," Lily said.
Lily place both of her hand on my cheeks and bring my face closer to her. Our lips met each other, it was warm, it was raw, it was something otherworldly, fireworks, atomic bomb anything you could think of. It just a wonderful feeling that I would never forget.
The whole world starts to shake, I could see the roads and Diner start to break apart like a piece of puzzles and start to float up into the sky.
It's like the end of the world.
Lily tighten her embrace around my body, I could feel her arm shaking because of the fear of the end. I embrace her even tighter, to calm her, to tell her that I will always be by her side until the end. We didn't stop our kiss but only continue until the bright white light shine and envelope us both.
THE END.
