“Bonnie? When is the next temporary door available?” I asked out loud, facing a large tree-flower thing. It had a trunk and leaves, which made it a tree, but instead of a canopy it had a bright red bed of flowers that looked like an upside down rose. We hadn’t gone far from where we had stopped initially, but at least we had good visibility all around us, while still being fairly well-hidden under the long green-blue coloured high grass. The surrounding vegetation was very slightly like something from a northern country. The trees had space between each other, and the canopy was open, letting a large amount of light filter through. The ambient temperature, warm and humid, and the vibrant colours reminiscent of an alien jungle were telling another thing. Though, it wasn’t as warm as I would have expected a jungle to be. I tried to focus on my part of the forest, my sister was just next to me, looking in the opposite direction.
“Creation of temporary door to world S3 will take ninety-five hours.” The voice of the AI echoed inside my neck, which was a very unsettling feeling.
“What did she say?” My sister asked, sipping slowly on one of our two remaining gourds of silver water.
“Ninety-five hours…”
My sister took a deep breath, broken off by a hiccup.
“Bonnie, you can’t use your drones to like, move the permanent door out of the dragon’s den?” She asked.
She waited for a bit, but her expression stayed the same.
“So?” I questioned.
“She isn’t answering…wait I don’t have command rights.” She realized.
“Oh yeah, I…fuck we were so unprepared for this. You can’t even use Bonnie…Bonnie can you share…how would you call it…station admin rights with subject 248?”
“Pending request…granted.”
I looked to my sister. “Try it again?”
“Bonnie? Can you move the permanent door out of the dragon’s den?” This time, I saw her face visibly grimace.
“Do I need to ask?”
“She can’t, there are only a few drones, they need to be connected with a miniature door, I guess, and they are there to scout, they can’t carry heavy objects.”
“Well, fuck.”
“…It’s fine. We came here to explore, and sure it didn’t go well at first, but all LITrpg heroes go through a rough start before they become totally op.”
“Op?”
“Overpowered.”
“Great, and how many would actually die in those circumstances if their survival wasn’t necessary for the story to continue?”
“…Erm…”
“That’s what I thought.” I rubbed my eyes.
“And now that I think about it, a lot of them are actually reborn and get like ten years of a nice loving family and calm village. Then there is like a bandit attack that they breeze through, and they get heralded as heroes.” She added, very unnecessarily.
“Great.”
“…Status.” I heard her say.
“What?”
“Oh. Cool. At least that’s how I expected it go. Wait, what’s hydrology? Why isn’t there a mental or magic…Oh. Oh! So that’s what it does.”
“L…Are you okay?” She was looking at nothing, and her eyes seemed to go over something only she could see.
She gave me an annoyed glance. “Don’t give me that look, shithead. Just say ‘status’ out loud and you’ll see. Ah fuck it makes it go away, status! This wouldn’t have happened if you had listened to my explanation about LITrpgs.”
“You trailed off for half an hour about ways to break the system! How was I supposed to remember?”
But she wasn’t listening to me.
“Fine, be like that.” I harrumphed. “Status.”

“Well. That’s useless.” I understood absolutely nothing of what I was seeing. Sure strength and the other basic stuff I could hazard a very obvious guess, but what about all the 1’s? Did it mean that if I added a point in strength, I would double my strength? Should I then also double my constitution to prevent me from ripping my arms out? And how exactly did I add points? I couldn’t interact with the damn blue virtual blindfold.
“Ask a question when your window is open, I think that’s what the [Help] option does.” My sister explained to me.
“Is everything working with voice commands?” I hazarded a guess.
“Oh, that’s a good point. Probably, let me try.” But I wasn’t listening to her, I was looking at the new prompt in front of my face.
System can be controlled through
Skill: [Speech: Template language]
“Don’t bother, the help screen just popped up and told me yes.”
“Oh ok, that’s cool.”
“Is it? What if it’s like Bonnie and only understands half the time? What if you’re a mute? What if…” The system help prompt rudely interrupted my critical analysis.
In case of status effect: [Mute]
System can still be accessed with
Skill: [Sign language: Template Language]
Skill: [Directional Eye Command].
“Huh.” I exclaimed.
“What?”
“Seems like the system isn’t discriminating to mute or deaf people. What about blind people…”
My sister grunted in annoyance. “Now I would really enjoy discussing system world inequalities, really, but seriously? Now?”
“Yeah, sorry. So, what have you discovered?”
“That we don’t have magic here, well, not like the four elements type thing. Apparently, it’s all about water. So we can only be a telekinesist that moves things with water, or an ice mage, or a tsunami-maker? Maybe?”
“Still pretty cool.”
“I wanted to throw lightning bolts around…”
“Well, can’t you make electricity or storms by changing humidity or temperature or something?”
“Oh. Yeah! Wait. I’ll have to look it up at the library when we’re back.”
“So, that’s Hydrology power and control. What about the status points? Are we really going to double our points by just asking to put a point in…”
“Wait stop!” My sister turned around to put a hand on my mouth. She missed slightly and almost crushed my nose.
“Ow, fuck, careful! What?”
“Don’t say that out loud while your status screen is open!”
“You think it’ll add stats just like that? Nah, there has to be a confirm option.” I countered.
“You want to take that chance?”
“Why not? We’ll have to put points into it anyway. I’ll go constitution, can’t go wrong with that. Erm…system can I get a point allocated in constitution?”

Confirm statistics points allocation? Y/N
“It did it! And look at that, a confirm prompt! No.” At that, my status window went back to what it was previously.
“…Ok. Fine, you win this one, I was being paranoid. Let’s ask what statistics are. [Help] Statistics?” Gaëlle tried. “It works, holy, that’s a wall of text.”
I arched an eyebrow, then realized she was seeing things as badly as I currently was. Which made me think we should not be doing this in the middle of the woods, but I wasn’t hearing anything around us, and honestly, I rationalized that the quicker we levelled up and understood the rules of this world, the safer we would be. But maybe that was me getting excited at the idea of levelling up. A level 3 wouldn’t be able to kill a dragon, so it probably wasn’t the most urgent thing to do.
“[Help] Statistics.” I said myself.
Statistics: Statistics are a visual, numbered representation of an individual’s body, mental and water-affinity. Constitution and Strength represent the healthiness and fitness of the body. Perception and Agility represent sense precision and quickness of the mind. Hydrology Power and Hydrology Control represent the power and control over water-affinity.
Initial statistics depend on Race and Race related factors, as well as Status effects. Initial statistics information can be accessed through the examination of race in one’s individual status. Initial statistics are increasing until individual reaches adulthood. Adulthood age information can be accessed through the examination of race in one’s individual status.
When Age: [Adult], only Status effects can influence initial statistics.
“Holy. That’s…complicated.” I began.
“Not really, I don’t believe I’ve seen many systems exactly like that, but the stats are pretty simple. It means we don’t really have [1] everywhere, that’s just what’s added to our natural racial stats. I suppose it makes sense; a dragon probably starts with a lot more strength than a squirrel.” My sister had a very focused look on her face, I could easily see that through the grey help screen.
“So, if I understand this right…Oh, we’re not exactly human anymore. That son of a bitch…” I sighed. My sister didn’t comment, and after a long silence I continued with what I had set to do. “Status: [Homo Chimera]” I spoke.
Race: [Homo Chimera]
[Homo Sapiens] modified through scientific and magical methods.
[Strength=120] [Perception=100] [Constitution=120] [Agility=100]

[Extreme Regeneration]
[Internal Mana Crystal]
[Hidden Body]
“Wow, look at that.” I told her.
“Status: [Homo Chimera]” While she read through the prompt, I remembered our innate skills.
“Status: Innate Skills.”
Innate Skills:
Skills acquired at birth -excluding status maintaining skills-
[New Species]
[Identical Twins]

“Wait that’s all?” I said, disappointed.
“This is shit.” My sister exclaimed. I turned to her, hardly seeing her.
“Exit.” I tried. With a smile, I saw all the prompts disappear. “What is it?”
“Levels are shit. Sure, we gained three levels, but looking at our basic stats, we barely can gain like ten, fifteen percent increase in one of our stats? And I swear there is a hidden mechanic that if you don’t balance your two body stats, or your two mental or water affinity stats together, bad things will happen to you.”
“You mean that you shouldn’t put a point in strength and not in constitution? That makes sense, but why should I need strength if I put a point in constitution?”
“Probably makes your heart able to beat stronger and faster, but also makes it heavy or some shit like that. Let me ask the [Help] thing, that’s exactly the kind of stuff it should tell me. [Help], is there danger in putting all points in one statistic?”
It seemed like it worked because she seemed slightly taken aback. “This is going to take a while.” She told me.
“Sure, let me continue my search on skills. Status: [New Species]
[New Species]
As a brand-new species, you gain improved fertility to help propagate into the world.
“…” I was happy that L was too busy looking at her own screen to see my face.
“Status: [Identical Twins]”
[Identical Twins]
You have been ?!ERROR?! with a perfect copy of yourself. Twins can access each other’s status and will always be able to feel when their sibling die.
“Fuck that!” I almost punched it, which would have been unpleasant as I was facing the trunk of the tree-flower.
“What is it?”
“Our innate skills are the most bullshit thing I’ve ever seen. The only ‘neat’ thing is that we can check each other’s status if we want. The rest is horrible.”
“Really? I’ll check it afterwards. But back on stats, I was right. Too big a discrepancy and it fucks you up badly.”
“Wait, doesn’t that mean we’re in a bad spot? There is more than two hundred points of difference between our two Hydrology stats.” I asked.
“Yeah, it’s a problem. Out of the three, it’s the least dangerous, because it’ll only be bad if we use water magic. But that pisses me off because I want to use magic. I’ll need…42 levels to get them even. 38 to go I guess. The good thing is that the baseline are humans, or well [Homo Sapiens], and they have 100 in everything, which means we’re above the mean in terms of race!”
“…You’re telling me we’re the superior race?”
“Yes!” She clearly had no idea what she was saying.
“…Yeah no, I’m not going to go there.”
“Oh, go away! Don’t be the offended asshole with me, you know I don’t mean it like that.”
“I won’t be offended by your blatant racism, but I must say that I’m not the one who dated the girl with pink hair. She wouldn’t have been happy with your comment.”
“I was seventeen! I needed someone to know if I was bi or not.”
“And you chose Emma.”
“Oh, yeah, that was her name. I’ll admit, that was probably one of my worst ideas. But you shouldn’t be generalizing, it had nothing to do with her hair colour.”
“I’m just saying, there are trends.”
Gaëlle shook her head at the horrible things I was saying, but still laughed.
“Let’s carry on. I want to use magic, and if I reach level 42 and get those stats stabilized, I could get pretty strong. I would be…twenty-five percent above the mean.”
“Assuming you don’t invest in anything else though. I think perception is quite the important thing to have in hostile territory.”
Gaëlle nodded. “Lucky I’m not alone then. And yeah, I don’t know what the best would be, but I think going only body, or only mind, or only magic is a bad plan. Going pure glass cannon can work in video games, but in real life? It doesn’t really matter if you’re the archimage of oceans if getting the flu will put you to bed for a month.”
“I didn’t understand the glass cannon part, but sure, I agree with you.”
“Does it bother you to go in a mental-physical build direction? We’ll both be going physical, your body is your sanctuary, but I’ll go full magic until I stabilize first, and I’ll probably do a seventy-five percent magic twenty-five percent physical after that.”
“I’ll do fifty-fifty. Sure, I always played the warrior anyway.”
“Aha! Now you’re starting to think like a real rpg gamer!”
I paused for a moment. A sudden thought crossing my mind.
“But how exactly are you going to level up if you can’t use magic? We don’t have spells, do we?”
My sister opened her mouth wide, then closed it. After looking puzzled for a moment, she finally answered me.
“I don’t know. Did you check our skills?”
“No. I suppose we’ll find our racial skills there, but I didn’t check them in depths. Status. Show skills.”

[Punching = 1]
[Kicking = 3]
“Well, that’s not glorious. I’ve got level one in punching and level three in kicking. I suppose that’s higher because of my friends playing soccer on campus.” I told her.
My sister sighed. “I’ve got [Biting = 1] as well, and my kicking is only level 1. No magic skill. I’ll still go magic; I want to go magic.”
I eyes her suspiciously. “Do you think you got biting because of the scar on my leg?”
She raised her shoulders, looking the most innocent she could. “Maybe?”
“Uh huh. Let’s go through them. Stop showing combat skills and show me…racial skills. Some of those looked good.” I turned my attention back to the system.
*Racial Skills: (-)
[Extreme Regeneration]
[Internal Mana Crystal]
[Hidden Body]
“I’ll look at the defensive skills then.” My sister said to me, or to the system, I couldn’t be certain.
“[Extreme regeneration]”
[Extreme Regeneration]: As long as your body has enough resources, it will repair up to the most severe injuries in a matter of minutes.
Yeah, that was logical. The silver liquid was iron rich to provide for the loss of blood. I was starting to think that the system didn’t really improve or do anything to us, but simply analysed and registered how we worked.
“Ok, that just says that as long as we’ve got enough to drink and to eat, we’ll regenerate most injuries.” I explained to my sister.
“Defensive skills are a dud as well. [Dodge] and [Block], but only at level 1 and 2 for me.”
That seemed to go with my theory of simply categorizing our abilities.
“General skills please. Oh! Now that’s more like it.” Gaëlle exclaimed.
I wanted to look at general skills now, but I knew she would explain them to me, and I would have better opportunities to look at everything in detail later.
“[Internal Mana Crystal].” I said.
[Internal Mana Crystal]: Your body and soul have been touched by mana, and let you gather !?ERROR!? from all around you. !?ERROR!? Mana doesn’t exist.
Skill locked.
My sister had stopped looking at her invisible screen to watch me. She was obviously very interested about anything related to magic.
“It’s utter bullshit.” I groaned. “Benedict gave us bodies that can do magic, real magic. But this world works with a system, or this hydro thingy, not magic. So we can’t use it here.”
“What!? Shit! Really? Let me see. [Internal Mana Crystal] …Fuck! Fine, whatever, at least the general skills are looking promising.”
I continued my quest of knowledge.
“[Hidden Body].”
[Hidden Body]: Parts of you are made out of mana, [Wings], [Claws], and [Tail] are accessible through the !?ERROR!? of the world. !?ERROR!? Mana doesn’t exist.
Skill locked.
“Are you fucking for real!?” I shouted.
“Shh!”
The forest was still silent, but I realized I had made a mistake.
We both stayed still for a few minutes. But whatever birds were here started singing again, and the wind going through the colourful vegetation brushed the leaves in a peaceful tone.
“Sorry. That was dumb of me. It’s just another locked skill. We can’t use it with the system we need magic. We could have had wings!”
“…Why would Benedict put things we won’t be able to use on us?”
My sister made a valid point, but I didn’t have any explanation to give her.
I shook my head. “I don’t know.”
She sighed, then continued to go through her read.
“What’s left then…erm…Daily Life Skills?” I tried.
Through non-use of the skill [Knitting] for over two years:
[Knitting = 1(-2)]
Confirm? Y/N
“What, really? You lose skill levels if you don’t use them for a while.”
That perked my sister right up.
“What? No! That sucks, it was one of the best parts of being part of a system! At least statistics don’t seem to be changing.”
“Until you get the status effect: [Fat], I guess.” I noted.
“Don’t rain on my parade.”
“No?” I tried my luck with the system.
The prompt disappeared and then…
Through non-use of the skill [Knitting] for over two years:
[Knitting = 1(-2)]
Confirm? Y/N
“Of course. Yes.”
The prompt disappeared fully this time, and then the most gigantic wall of blue text appeared in front of my face.
It contained every basic thing everyone could do, every menial task that could be considered a hobby or didn’t go into the other skill categories. It also contained my highest-level skills yet. To cite a few:
[Writing = 77]
…
[Walking = 29]
…
[Missionary = 12]
…
So sex skills were also registered. I wasn’t going to get into my level in [Masturbation]. On a more serious note, it made me think for a bit. Certainly the people native to this world didn’t use those specific words or didn’t think some of the things I was reading could register as skills. I had [Computer Skills = 68] for example. That made no sense. Why would there be a skill for computers, and why would mine be so high? I could do the basic stuff, and even though my sister had taught me some of the more advanced things, I had already forgotten all of them. I had invested way less time into [Computer Skills] than in something like [Writing]. I had been writing essays and thesis for years!
I was missing something. Then I remembered I had the perfect tool to get answers. I wasn’t going to ask [Help] right now though, priorities.
“Don’t get into Daily Life Skills, it’ll give you a headache and the only interesting thing it tells you is how great you are at masturbating or knitting.”
My sister laughed. “I want to know. Show Daily Life Skills please. Oh, I got a special achievement for being the best in computer skills and reaching the upper limit. It gave me experience, a whole lot actually.”
“What? Really? Did you level up?”
“Like crazy. That’s nice, don’t forget to open all the skill tabs, maybe you’ll get something as well. One step closer to our goal, I guess. Now for the important part… where is my [Masturbation] skill?” After a few seconds, she laughed again, then suddenly stopped. I looked at her, only to see cogs turning inside her head.
“L…?” She gave me a very ominous look.
“Show me the Daily Life Skills of my twin, please.”
I gasped. “Wait, you can’t do that!”
“Hell I can’t…where is it where is it. Oh, you tried [Anal]? Kinky…Ah! [Mast…Wait, that’s it? Come on, that’s a pathetic score.”
“L that’s such a breach of privacy I should press charges…show my twin’s Daily Li…”
“Daniel if you finish that sentence, I will murder you in your sleep.”
“How is that fair?!”
I crossed her gaze, and as I wasn’t sure if she was serious or not, I let it go. “I’ll do it when you’re not there.” I taunted.
“Mhh. You’re called Nielle in this world. It suits you.” She said more seriously.
“I will punch you. I’m a girl too now, I’m allowed.”
“That’s sexist.” She responded without thinking. “And no, I’m not joking here. Nielle. Your name is a pain to say, and that’s a nice nickname. It feels a bit weird to call you Daniel, honestly, with how you look.”
That stinged a bit.
“What do you know, child slavers and AI computers give good nicknames.” I said bitterly.
“Nothing is completely evil.”
I sighed.
“Fine, it’s better than shithead, and I won’t have to call you a cunt on two legs anymore.”
“Nielle and L. Elle. Nielle and Elle.”
“L? You okay?”
She was lost in thought.
“Yeah. Sorry. The system just renamed me Elle. Do you think it can read our thoughts?”
“The system? I’m not sure. It doesn’t really feel that way, or it wouldn’t have said we are identical twins, but then everything is written in English, so maybe? Or it adapts to environmental clues only it can see? I was thinking of asking the [Help] skill for answers, but we should hurry up and level up, then find somewhere we can get safe.”
“Agreed, let’s get back to it. [Purify].”
“Movement Skills.” I said, trying to ignore my sister’s very interesting sounding skill.
Movement skills was exactly what I thought. I saw [Dodge = 4] there, so I supposed some skills overlapped, and [Running = 10], and some other basic motor action. It wasn’t anything very interesting. I also lost two levels in [Climb] for not using it in ten years.
“Mental Skills.” It was the second to last one on my list, I also wanted to look at the General Skills. My sister was very much plunged into those, and I wanted to see it.

There was a bunch of skills, everything related to knowledge or things I had learned in school. I had expected Mental Skills to be something like mind blast or illusion things and be empty. But then I remembered that the only type of magic in this world was water related.
“What now? Can’t I read in peace?” My sister asked.
“I just got those achievements of yours by opening my mental tab! It told me I’m the best psychologist, mathematician, and all-around scientist in the world! I got a shit-load of experience and levels.”
“The best…Wait you’re great at math?”
“Erm…” That made me pause. “No. I do statistics a lot for my job but…wait…I got it. The level of a skill is relative. It’s based on this world’s best! That’s why you got an achievement on computer science! You’re better than me, and I’m the only other person in this world right now that can use a computer! Psychology and the scientific approach probably haven’t been invented yet, and they are most likely way behind in basic maths as well. We can even check it! Show L’s Mental Skills!”
“Hey!” She tried to stop me angrily then paused. “Oh, I got an achievement.” Then she grimaced. “Urgh.”
“What?” I immediately saw what warranted that reaction, as it was on top of her skill page. “[Economics]…” That had been my father’s idea. My sister had hated being forced to go to university, but to her credit, had held on until the last year. She had bailed in a spectacular fashion that last year.
“Well, at least it’s free experience. Holy crap that’s great. We don’t even need to worry about the stat imbalance now! Being the best in a field is the…well…best. Sorry.”
I laughed anyway.
“In any case.” I said. “Your math score is… eighty-five. Yeah, that’s it, the skill levels are relative. I’m surprised you’re not better than me though.”
“Please, I forgot everything and maths are not even a big part of studying economics, it’s more history and theories. I use my smartphone to calculate additions.”
“Well, that explains it. Wait, we’ve got really, really shit combat and defensive skill levels then.”
“Not that surprising, I’ve never fought in my life.”
I shook my head. “No way, it can’t be that low. There are children, old men and women… If the general combat skills are so much better than ours, we’re screwed.”
“Don’t say that! We’ve got so many levels now!”
“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean anything. Now, maybe the rules for combat skills and daily and mental aren’t the same but look… status.”

I quickly checked my status before continuing, my sister was staying silent, I think she already knew what I was going to say. “Level 79, great.” I couldn’t hide being pleased at that, before refocusing. “Still, that’s four hundred stat points, making me potentially only twice as strong and fast, right? But we have no combat skills to go with it and have no idea what the limit of levels are. I don’t think being twice as strong is going to help against that dragon. What if it’s level 700 too? I think we can assume that the achievements we got are rare, so it must be a lot of experience, but people have lived here their whole lives, gained experience their whole lives! Those levels are a nice jump start, but we’re still in very, very deep shit L.”
“I know. Fuck, I know already! I came here to have fun, not to get shouted at!”
“Well…! Well…sorry L. I’m on edge. We’re not okay. We’re far from okay and this situation. It isn’t helping. But we’ll get through it, I promise.” I turned around and hugged her.
My sister sniffed, then gently pushed me away. “Yeah, we’ll get through it. I’m level…status? Level 73. But you gained an extra 250 000 experience, right?”
“Right.”
“We could find out how the levelling system works with that, right?”
“Or maybe [Help] can tell us. But we’ve been at it for too long. We need to level and move. Get a hold of our surroundings.”
“Agreed. I’ll go for magic and body. Half and half for now until I get a spell. That’s a quarter of my points in each stat, I don’t think it matters if there are a few points of difference between one stat and another, just a big discrepancy would be bad. And you go mind and body?”
“That’s the plan. So that makes…” We both did our calculations on our own, then double checked with each other, and once we confirmed our stat investment, my status showed up like this.

“Ok, that’s…” And then I immediately fell to the ground.
I tried to warn my sister, but it was too late, as she too was softly hitting the forest floor.
I didn’t feel any pain or discomfort, I just felt so tired. So tired.
Not that bad really.
A breeze compared to what I had experienced before.
But despite my best efforts, I could not prevent falling asleep anyway.
