To know, or not to know?

To know, or not to know?

Hello world, this is my first written story that I will be publishing of any kind. It follows my current game of Pokemon Blaze Black 2 Redux. As I play through the game, I will be writing down what I believe are important plot points, as well as mixing some things up. Not everything can be based off of the game, obviously, so there will be some differences. As this is my first time, I understand that many will not be so positive of my work. That is ok. This is a project for me to practice my writing skills, and to show my love for pokemon at the same time.

All feedback is welcome, so long as it is constructive and meaningful. I will not be changing how I believe a character will act, nor will I change the plot to anyone’s whims but my own. I do not own pokemon or any of these characters, so without further ado, Enjoy.

I’m not sure how to start this, so hello. My name is Barry. I live in an amazing world, one inhabited by creatures named “pokemon.” I lived an ordinary life in this world, My mother raised me as a kid, whilst my dad searched the world for… something. I stopped caring by my 10th birthday. I was never an unhappy kid, however I could never shake the feeling that I was in the wrong place. Not like I didn’t feel like I belonged in school or with kids my age. Like I didn’t belong in my own world. It wasn’t until a few days before I met my new family that I would understand. This is my story. An arduous, winding, and dangerous tale of how I became the best there ever was. So there I was, a young 15 year old teenager about to make history…

“No way, No way! He stepped way out of bounds, how can’t you see that” shouted a smaller boy, “Give it up already Henry, Barry never stepped foot out of bounds, you can’t change that just by yelling at us!” retorted a young teen. Young Henry, ever the stubborn one, continued to argue “Oh yeah right, you’re just saying that cause he’s your best friend Hugh, don’t get in between this! I saw him step over the line with my own eyes.” “Alright, alright. Take the point off, we can replay the round. Just give me a minute to get some water.” I said.

I turned around, wiping the sweat off my brow, looking for my water bottle. “Come on man, you can’t just give him the point. This is the last “Wall catch 'em all” game for us! We have to win one last time!” I looked over at my best friend, who was just a few inches shorter than I. “Oh come on Hugh, you know when he gets like that he doesn’t stop. Best to save the arguing and just win the round again.”

“I guess.. But that doesn’t make me happy about it! We lost just last year because he wouldn’t shut up about how Bert caught the Dragonite before you, and everyone believed him then! Maybe if we didn’t give in to him so much, he would finally shut up.” I breathed deeply, taking my last calming breath before giving Hugh a look of desperation, “Listen, I’ve had a headache all day, I don’t feel like arguing about something else today. Lets just replay the round, and we can win fair and square, now shut up and let me take my minute of rest.” Hugh obliged, although noticeably unhappy.

I rolled my eyes, before reaching for my water bottle on the bench. I swear, sometimes Hugh could get so focused on a task that he forgets he isn’t the only person with feelings to be accounted for. I wanted to be mad at him, but I just couldn’t do it. Hugh has always been such a driven friend, I can’t just blow up at him for wanting to take the point. It was quite annoying. Henry and I have always had a… tense past. His older brother would never leave me alone, and as he was older than me by 3 years, there was nothing I could do. Eventually there came a time where Henry joined in, and would throw little insults at me from behind his brother. A rat that one.

I set my water down and brought my fingers up to my temples, being hit by a wave of nausea that just wouldn’t let up. It felt like there was a building pressure in my head, like when you tie the middle of a hose and water stops coming out. I blinked, and spots began to appear in my vision. “What… What's happening? Hugh? Hugh! Hugh, I can’t see!” Pain, there was so much pain. What am I even doing here…?

Hugh couldn’t believe this shit. First, Barry just lets Henry have his own way. Then he has the gall to be upset with him? Come on, that isn’t even fair. It’s not like it's his fault his friend got a headache. Hugh sighs, looking back over to where everyone was waiting for the next round to start. Just 2 more rounds and they win their 5th Wall Catch ‘em All tournament, the most ever won, and although there are no prizes at stake, this was where legends were made. Well, sort of. You see, there was a tradition in place in their town, where before you become a trainer, you would participate in the Wall Catch ‘em All tournament. We aren’t really sure where or how it started, but it did. It was said that only those who win a tournament could ever become one of the greats. A great gym leader, a great ranger, a great ACE trainer. What didn’t matter, just that whatever you did, you would surely become great.

Hugh’s brain stopped worrying about the tournament the second he heard the cry for help coming behind him “Hugh! Hugh, I can’t see!” He turned around immediately, watching his friend start looking around, his face contorted in visible pain. Hugh nearly teleported to Barry, reaching for his shoulder, as he suddenly slumped and began convulsing.

“HELP! GET HELP IT’S BARRY, SOMETHING’S WRONG!” The chatter instantly stopped. All of the kids were on their feet in an instant, running this way and that to find an adult who could do anything. Hugh stood there, frozen, as his best friend turned in agony. Was this a seizure? Was Barry dying? Could he do anything? He couldn’t be sure, and that worried him the most.

Nearly a minute had passed and Hugh looked up to see several worried adults running towards them, Barry’s mother included. “Oh my boy, no.. NO! NO! NO!… please Arceus, no, not my boy.” She practically barreled through the adults, screaming in despair. Barry’s mother pulled out a pokeball, releasing a large Serperior, who picked Barry up with her vines, placing him on her back. They were gone in an instant.

It had been nearly 3 days since the incident. 2 entire days spent in the hospital, and another whole day with my mom treating me like fine imported China. Seriously? My head doesn’t even hurt anymore and well… Well, things were different. I knew things. Things I know I shouldn’t know. Who is Ash? Why does he look like the EX Indigo Champion, Red? And to boot, I’m pretty sure I played a video game about my life. I recognize Hugh. Ok, well obviously I recognize him, but it's like I knew of him before I even knew him. Heck, even Professor Juniper is in it, and she’s the Pokemon Professor for the whole Unova Region! Maybe I ought to just take a shower, wash everything away.

I spent a long time in the shower. You would too if your mom had an elite level vaporeon that could perfectly heat your water. I walked out, looking for my mom only to hear the door open and close as her voice rang out, “Barry! You won’t believe who I just got off the phone with. Look, is it still your dream to be a pokemon trainer?” What. Is. Happening. This is the meanest case of Deja Vu I think I have ever had. “Uhm… Professor Juniper? I guess? And yes I want to go on a journey mom, I’ve been saying that every year since I was 10!” “Well ok ok, I have something special for- How did you know that I was on the phone with the Professor?” Shit. Why is she so suspicious of me right now? “Well, you asked if I wanted to go on a journey, and considering that you got a pokemon from the Professor, I was kind of hoping that I could too. You know?”

“Ohhh ok ok. Good, it wouldn’t do if you were listening in on my phone calls now would it?” She said, smacking her teeth before starting again “Well, now that my surprise is ruined, I might as well just say it. Professor Juniper has sent one of her younger assistants, Bianca, to deliver a pokemon to you. I believe she should be up on the city outlook, go look for her and meet your first partner pokemon!” “Yes mom! Thank you so much. I'm so excited. I’m gonna be an even better trainer than you are!”

His mother began to laugh, before bringing her hand to his head and messing with his hair “You will do that, and so much more my son. Remember to never lose trust in yourself and your pokemon, and that if you ever feel like you are alone, you can give me a call. Now go son, go get your first partner.” I met her eyes, smiling, before diving into her arms like it was going to be my last. “I love you mom.” “I love you too Barry, now get going before Bianca gets impatient.” “Oh you are so right, bye maa!”

I walked out of the door, blinking as my eyes took in the sun. “Barry! It’s so good to finally see you, your mom had you locked up good there man!” I look over to see Hugh and his younger sister, a sweet girl named Riley. “It's great to see you too man! And of course you, as well Riley! Guess what? I’m about to get my first pokemon!” “No way that’s aw-” Hugh started, before his sister beat him and said

“You better take care of them Barry, pokemon are sentient creatures you know, with their own feelings and thoughts. Never take their friendship for granted!” Wow,  that is a lot to unpack. Riley’s got some issues.

“Well, as I was saying. I’m really excited that you’re also getting a pokemon. You remember that egg I got from winning the Aspertia Pokemon Science Fair last year? He just hatched yesterday, so that means we get to go on our journey together!”

“No way that’s awesome. What pokemon did you get?” I responded, wondering if he would hide them this time again. “Not gonna tell you! How about you get your pokemon first, and then we battle!” This is happening. This is really happening. Shit. I almost felt the world come down around me. Am I going to be fighting Team Plasma? I looked up trying to keep my face together, “Ok sounds great to me Hugh, then in that case, let's get going!”

Riley spoke up before we could even take a step, “Barry, please keep Hugh in line. I’m going to go visit your mom, bye!” and she walked off to join my mother, likely for a stroll to the park. Hugh’s parents were fairly busy in the late morning to the afternoon, so Riley likes to come over with Hugh. She mostly talks to Mom, and Hugh and I find that arrangement completely fine.

We watched Riley enter the house before looking at each other, smiling, bumping their fists together. “It’s been a long time coming, huh, Barry? We made a promise to each other that we would both reach the top within a year, think you can do it?” I looked away to the sky, and looked back to Hugh, “I don’t know, can you?” I bantered on.

We walked around town before finally reaching the Aspertia City Outlook. One of the best night views you could get as a local. Currently, all you could see were the orange and red autumn trees, over a blue sky. Oh and the mountain. Right, that would probably be pretty cool to most. It’s been my background for the last almost 16 years now, you tend to lose sight.

I saw a young woman at the top of the balcony, when Hugh turned and told me, “I think that’s her. I’ll wait here, you go on Barry.” I looked over to the woman and continued walking up the steps, before she turned around and said “Oh hey, sorry I’m waiting on someone right no- oh wait are you Barry?” I nod my head “Awesome it’s great to finally meet you, my name’s Bianca! I was sent here by Professor Juniper to deliver a starter pokemon. Are you ready to embark on a grand journey, of many, many difficulties Barry?”

Why did she have to use many two times. Isn’t it enough to just say it once? Man I’m starting to feel like I’m being warned. “I believe I am ready, but I guess there’s only one way to tell. I’m ready Bianca.”

Bianca smiled tautly, before flipping the bag onto her waist and turning it over, “In that case, please, meet your first partner!” I look in to see three pokeballs, each one with a different symbol. Fire, grass, and water, and I knew which one I was picking.

And that's all she wrote for now yall. I'm still a pretty new writer, and seeing as this is mostly a fun creative project for me, I wanted to bring yall in on it so that maybe we can all have some fun. At the end of each chapter I will be posting a “QOC” or Question Of the Chapter. Leave a review with your answer, and I’ll put the best comment at the top of the chapter with a response. IF you are featured at least 3 times in the “top” comment, I will ask you to create a trainer with 2-3 pokemon to either meet, or battle, with Barry. Each comment will be chosen by myself before I post the next chapter, when I have readers. For now, I will just be uploading chapters until I recieve a review related to the QOC.

QOC: What is your favorite pokemon-type, and why?
