Day 1
What am I?
A slight tingle touched the back of my mind. After determining it wouldn't kill me, I ignored it.
What are they?
Another tingle. I ignored it again. I've seen those creatures before. Their fur is thicker than mine. Their claws larger. Their strangth overwhelming. They were bigger than me afterall. Everything bigger than me tends to be stronger than me. They were moving away. I was safe.
Two more creatures entered my field of view. They had no fur on their bodies, only some on their head. They were all white, except the fur was brown. I have never seen them before. They are bigger than me. They are headed towards me. I need to run.
After running for a while, I became hungry. I started to scavenge for some food, preferrably berries. But then I saw them again. I need to run. The hunger is getting stronger. I need to find food. But there they are again. They are chasing me. I need to run.
I need to run.
I need to run.
I need to eat.
I need to run.
I need to run.
I need...
I can't move any longer.
"It's this fox?"
"Yes. It knew we were tracking it. That is why it has exhausted itself. It needs to be healed before it dies of exhaustion."
"Why would we need to heal it? We just need it's head. I'll just chop it off." I suddenly felt the heat of day, even though it was night just moments ago.
This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.
"We have animal cruelty laws. That action would be illegal."
"What are you talking about? The entire reason this experiment recieved funding is because none of these things are real animals. They are biological machines with no souls or sentience. What does it matter what we do to them?"
"It has gained sentience. That means we cannot harm it. It has full animal rights."
"Animal rights only apply to things that have both a soul and sentience. It only has one. I'm going to kill it." The heat of day suddenly became hotter, as if the sun was high in the sky.
"I will not allow you." The heat of day disappeared. I can feel the chill that comes from the sudden lack of heat.
"What do you think you're doing?"
"I am stopping you. You are attempting to hurt an animal protected by the law and I am therefore putting you under temporary suspension."
"I'm putting you on temporary suspension for an unprovoked attack on a fellow researcher! And I'm going to beat you down for resisting arrest." Suddenly the heat was back. I managed to turn my head slightly to see what was happening. A sun appeared on the hand of one of them, making it day.
"I have never been able to reason with you. Let us see who is better versed in the arts." Many lights shined, and the area in front of me became brighter than day was. Then it began to alternate between extreme heat and extreme cold. All of the green began to disappear from the landscape around me, then I saw everything through a yellow screen. Lights continued to flash for a while, but eventually stopped and one of the two dropped.
"Fine, you've broken my body. Take me in." Something hard to see stood where the creature who fell was. Then another light flashed. The other fell.
"You fiend! Admit defeat only to continue to fight."
"Your magic can't hurt me now that I'm a soul. Thanks for saving me a body. I'll shorten your death by a couple of years. Of course, an eternity minus two is still an eternity!"
The trancluscent being touched me, causing pain to come in waves throughout my body. I was to exhuasted to move, too weak to resist. Then the being shrieked and backed away.
"How? Your magic shouldn't be able to touch me! Unless... The forbidden arts? You hypocrite!" The being slowly faded away.
"I'm a scientist. I study everything." Only one being was still moving. Then it looked me in the eyes. I couldn't move to run away, but it could crawl close to me.
"Sorry little thing, I scared you. It's kind of late for me. This is going to hurt, I'm sorry, but you'll understand everything when you inherit my memories."
Something surged within my mind. And suddenly I understood everything. I learned the meaning of everything being said. Of the two bears I saw earlier. Of the fued between the two researchers who fought to the death using their magic here. Of my situation. Of everything.
I am an experiment in a world of magic. Modeled after a fox from a magicless world, I was being used as one of many subjects to try and seperate the soul and sentience. I am the experiment that succeeded. The man who died at first then became a soul was named Jordan, and he modified my body in a way that made me capable of using magic. He planned to steal my body then deal with Micheal, my savior and the person who lead to my enlightenment, but Micheal used his knowledge of forbidden areas of the sciences to destroy Jordan's soul. And now I have all of the knowledge Micheal had, but none of his memories. That means I wouldn't be able to figure anything out until the situation arises. There are no plans for future encounters, and there is no precaution for possible hazards. But at the same time, there is no overwritten personality. I am all me. And now I am completely aware of my situation.
