“Ren, please don’t slam the door,” Liesa said without looking up from her paperwork.
A vulpar girl wearing a red cloak stormed through the office and put her hands on her hips. Her ears were pointed back, and her orange tail swished irritably. “This isn’t going to work, Liesa.”
“What isn’t?”
“These new recruits. All hot-heads.”
Liesa chuckled under her breath at the pot calling the kettle black.
“They all think they can take charge,” Ren continued. “Just because they’ve been using magic all their lives doesn’t mean they know everything. It is a new world out there. It doesn’t work the same anymore. Magic users are now a rare breed!”

A fireball flared into existence above Ren’s palm before she clenched it out.
Sitting back in her chair, Liesa knitted her fingers on her lap. “Ren, when the Primary gave us these instructions, they trusted us to lead those that were still able to use magic. The world is going to need protectors, it needs magic, and if they are just as fiery as you, then we are better off. Make them use it.”
Ren’s face twisted in a scowl as she glared at her director. After a moment, she sighed. “We’re going to need a lot more.”
“And we will find them. It will take time, but word will get around, and our guild will grow into something that would make the House of Pyrem proud.” Liesa stood and rounded the desk to place her hands on Ren’s shoulders. “And when that happens, you will be right there beside me at the head of it all, leading us into this new era.”
A smile broke out across Ren’s face. “Knock it off. So, have you decided on a name for these magic users and this guild yet?”
“Yes. The Mage Order.”
