Chapter 1: Purg-Ugh-Tory

“Ugh, my head.” A pitiful voice mumbled, as the owner felt his head searing in pain.

“Hey man, it’s about time you woke up.” A mellow voice drawled.

Bracing through the pain, the young man willed his eyes to open. The darkness that clouded his eyes became flooded with searing white light. Groaning with pain, he slowly picked himself off of the ground. When his sight returned to him he noticed that he was currently in a pure white room.

“What the? Where am I? How did I even get here?” He groaned out. The ache in his head pulsed stronger whenever he tried to remember how he got into this predicament. Other than pain, the only thing he can remember was that his name was Brandon Nale.

The other voice called out from behind him. “Oh, don’t worry about that dude.” The voice knowingly informed him. “Everyone gets that headache like when they arrive here after they died. It will vanish when we end our business here.”

“Is that so?” The young man sighed with relief as he turned to face the owner of the other voice, rubbing his head in his attempts to stop the pain. “Thank goodness that this headache will - Did you say ‘Died’?!”

“Huh, did I? I think I did?” The blond man in front of him brought his hand under his chin. “Yeah, I’m pretty sure I said that. Eh, whatever. I’ll just say it again. You have died, welcome to the afterlife.”

The young man looked dazed for a moment. He wanted to protest, argue that he shouldn’t be dead. Yet as he looked at the man in front of him, noting that he had a perfect face beyond anything a human should have, a cloak of white fabric that shone in a multitude of colors that could not have been made by anything human, and a pair of pristine wings which sprouted from his back that didn’t belong on earth.

Brandon gave a defeated sigh, accepting that the person in front of him could only be an angel. Or maybe some kind of strangely dressed surfer guy. He was leaning more towards angel though. “Alright then, so I’m dead. Am I in Heaven?”

The angel gave a dismissive scoff. “Pftt, no way man. Not many people devote their lives into bettering the lives of others. You wouldn’t be talking to me if that were the case.” He explained.

Not heaven? Brandon thought, as the remaining working parts of his mind quickly realized the other option that he could be sent to. “Is that so… then… are you sending me to Hell?”

The surfer angel shrugged. “Dunno bro, you ruin the lives of countless people for your own selfish gain recently?”

“…I don’t think so?”

“Then you probably won’t end up down there either.”

“But then where am I?”

“Purgatory, duh.” The angel paused for a moment, waiting for Brandon's reaction. But, whatever he was waiting for didn’t happen, as the youth only scratched his head and scrunched his face. “Like here, you will get a chance to ascend to hang out with the angels, or descend to chill with the demons.”

“Wait, what? You mean I still have a chance to go to either?”

“Of course dude! No one wants to stick around people they don’t get along with.”

“I guess that makes sense, maybe, sort of… So am I just going to meditate and pray until I know where I should end up?”

The angel shrugged. “Hey man, you can try that if you want but we tried that centuries ago, but almost everyone went mad from boredom. You should have seen those guys man; they were insane, ripping their limbs off, muttering nonsense, bashing their heads all over the place. Good times… Anyways, what was I talking about? Ah right, the big guys didn’t like all the crazies going into their domain. You know so then they got together and invented a better method of doing things. It wasn’t the friendliest meeting, mind you, super awkward, but they managed to get the job done. Now only half of them lose their minds after a couple of centuries!”

“What.”

“I know right. That’s quite an improvement.” The surfer angel grinned as he snapped his fingers and a blue screen appeared in front of him. It seemed to be a cue card as the angel started to read off the screen in a more formal manner.“ So now, may I introduce, [Purgatus 2.0]. Here, you’ll face countless trials to find out the essence of your soul. You can choose to follow the light to help and cooperate with others. Save those in need from creatures of legend and monsters of nightmare. Raise your fame and level high enough, and the blessings of Heaven will become available to you. Or you can march towards the call of darkness, slaughter all who get in your way. Raid, pillage and plunder to raise infamy and level to despicable points until you can be at home with the curses of hell!”

He could feel another headache forming. “You mean the afterlife is some sort of game?!”

“The best one ever man!” The angel quickly dropped his rigid voice back to his usual one. “So let’s get started with your registration. You beginning stats will reflect the actions that you have done in your life. This should take that long, after all there isn’t much… Done! You may now look at your status.”

“How do I do that?” He looked around for a button or controller to use.

The angel rolled his eyes. “Just say Status for it to appear, duh. Did you never play a game before man?”

“Oh, is it like that? Alright then, Status.”

“So you can see man, your stats are quite typical for someone starting out.”

“What’s with my name?! How did it become Donn?!”

“You know man, almost everything you’ve like said so far has been a question. You’re being a total buzzkill right now.” The angel dismissed his question. “But enough of that, right now it’s time to start your journey. Your initial spawn will be set in a random place on world. Where you end up will depend on your luck-”

“But my luck is blank!”

“So have faith young soul, and if you remember what I have told you-“

“You barely told me anything!”

“You will definitely find your path. So long, don’t die too much! That would be really bad.”

“Why would that be –” The angel dramatically snapped his fingers and Donn instantly vanished in a flash of light. Now alone, the angel stretched his arms in the air.

“Ah, just in time for my break. Did I forget to mention to tell that guy something, I did rush through it a bit… oh well he’ll be fine.”

------------------

In an instant the white room vanished, replaced with a vast space of darkness. Brandon, or Donn now, noted that at least the angel was correct about something as he noticed that he no longer had a headache.

Welcome to [Purgatus 2.0]

Now that he had a clear head, he could slowly remember some details of his life before. He had been an average kid, the oldest kid in a middle class family. Average in whatever he tried to do with his parents sending him through various activities to see if he could find a passion for anything.

There never was anything that could catch his attention for long. At least his parents would learn which ones to send his siblings to after he tried it out first. They would do relatively well or even better when compared to him. It didn’t bother him too much; in fact he even called himself the prototype child of the family… no one laughed at his joke.

Even in school he was an average student. With no club and average grades repeatedly from his freshman to senior year, he didn’t have much of a life. He could remember the one friend he would hang out with from time to time, but there wasn’t much that he did that wasn’t average. The only other notable thing he could remember from his life was that he finally managed to ask a girl he liked out on a date.

In fact, that happened quite quickly. It was someone he admired for a while and he worked up the courage to ask her out to the movies during the weekend. To his surprise she agreed and he spent the whole week planning for that day. Yet no matter how hard he tried to remember, he couldn’t really remember the actual date.

Actually the day before, he could remember being so excited that he couldn’t sleep…and because of that he had overslept the day of the date.

He could remember frantically jumping out of bed, rushing past the nice cloths he prepared the day before, grabbing only a pair of underwear in his frantic rush to make it on time. The quickly brushed his teeth and hopped into the shower.

Knowing that everyone else at home were either asleep or out for the day, Brandon could remember finishing his shower and rushing back to his room. He had hopped around in the hallways, frantically pulling his underwear through his legs. It had gotten caught during the process which caused him to trip down next to the…stairs…and…then…he…fell…...

“AaRrGgHh! What the hell?!” Brandon instantly crouched down to his knees and covered his ears. “Why is that the reason that I died?!” At this point he began to roll around on the tiled floor in futile attempts to repress his memory again. His screams echoed across the walls.

While this was happening, iridescent green flames came to life on the stony dungeon walls. A vast and majestic tile room basked in the glow of the otherworldly light. The marble tiles on the floor danced with a multitude of colors.

Brandon was still busy with his self-pity to notice the dazzling room that he spawned in. He didn’t notice the pair searing red eyes that opened in response to his scream of anguish, the system message that appeared shortly after the titanic creature behind him started moving, nor then the large fanged maw opened to engulf his body. However, he did notice the searing unbearable pain.
