A barren wasteland as far as can be seen, only broken by sparse broken peaks and the occasional grey cloud, a humanoid figure roams. His destination unknown, the figure stands taller than most men, lumbering a massive 9 meters tall. The figure gleamed in the haze of sunlight, bits of rust, scorch marks and indents covering the armor, a single Pauldron covers the right shoulder, the left one appearing to be torn off. The metal giant walks freely, and unending mission it was tasked, its destination lost to time and war. This metal giant, once known as a federation fire support mech, code named Echo, continues his endless mission. Repel the invaders.
Going back, the war with “them" has been ongoing for 10 years now. They came from dimensional rifts, one by one the rifts opened and expelled the monsters, at first, we had them contained, but as more rifts opened and more came through things became worse, eventually the last few standing countries came together to try and build a weapon. Code named project steel soldiers they built mechs, simply put the mechs needed an advanced control system to process the data needed to run them. An AI to put it simply, problem is they didn’t have an ai advanced enough. They did have the human brain; a human mind could work…
Despite moral codes and human rights, in the face of extinction all options were used. In the end using tech created from the study of the enemy’s hive mind they found a way to upload a human mind into a machine, the government took orphans and used them to create the AI's. The process was…. Painful, ripping the souls from bodies, implanting into a machine brainwashed into being nothing but a processed memories deleted, it worked. The federation had workable AIs to regulate and assist pilots, some pilots found the ticks some mechs would do, certain gestures, responses to names and words weird, but simply chalked it up to new tech having bugs.

For a while humanity started to contain the threat even going so far as to try and send recon teams through rifts, alas, this was only the initial scout wave. The main force came 5 years in, decimating most of what was left, they employed a weapon similar to a nuke, and started glassing cities left and right. Only so much can be done, eventually humanity fell.
That brings us back to echo, the soul of a young boy was following his last order, kill the enemy, a few miles behind this lumbering behemoth lies piles of bodies some flesh some metal, the enemy was not prepares for this prototype, unfortunately his construction came too late to stop the war… as he moved forward one might notice slime covering certain parts and damaged sections, nanobots, self-replicating and repair drones made to maintain this unit making him self-sufficient they put all the bells and whistles to try and make this unit a true juggernaut of the field, what they never expected was the nukes the enemy used to have been able to kill living beings through radiation shielding, it is unknown how they did it but while fighting what was left of Chicago, Echo was hit by a tactical nuke, apparently deemed a threat by the enemy, echo’s pilot was killed, but Echo survived, his nanobots repairing and restoring him using scrap material, for the next 10 years Echo would continue to fight , making ammo and repairing never quite dying. After 10 years of not being able to kill Echo, they tried a new weapon, they delivered a small object right into a gap in his armor, the object detonated opening a rift, sucked in Echo disappeared from earth and his endless crusade, his story is one no one would know or remember, later earth would be cracked for metal and ultimately destroyed this is a story for another time what we look at now is where Echo went and the beings he encountered… the gods and the devils of another universe…
