Chapter 4: Freedom

Chapter 4: Freedom

My bare feet feel sore against the ground, as if we have been walking for hours since waking up from the explosion. The sun that was once high in the sky above me was now a glittering white moon. My heart feels heavy from the events that had just passed. The man that had freed me is by my side, but the one that was by me all along is gone. I watch my feet press into the dirt on the ground, the sound of wildlife all around in the forest. I have always wanted to see the world outside the lab and now that I have, I know I have to live on greatly like John would have wanted. I sigh and look at Zack, who was holding onto his large violet spear. He uses it as a walking stick which I find strange, but that isn’t the only strange thing about the demon. He saved my life from torment, but I don’t fully understand why. Finally, the questions flooding my mind become so loud I have to say something!

“Who are you, really? Why did you save me!?” I couldn’t help but blurt out the words. There is too much I don’t know, and I feel I deserve answers. Zack turns around and smiles at me wider than before, stopping in his tracks. The spear vanishes from his hand as he kicks back a leg behind the other, with his right hand on his chest bending forward in a bow. “Why just call me your knight in shining armor, Miss Star.” He looks up at me from the bow, standing back up slowly not breaking eye contact with me. I don’t know what to say I am completely distracted by his actions. He’s so confident with everything he does and says, with that never-ending smile plastered across his face.

“That still doesn’t answer my questions,” I say after regaining my thoughts. He tilts his head to the side looking at me, the spear returned in his right hand. “Just be grateful I saved you. I cannot explain everything now, just try your very best to trust me, and consider me your faithful guard for now. Take that as a reason to save your life, Miss Star.” I have nothing to say against this I can’t think of anything. I’m lucky enough to be free from the hell I was in, so I suppose I should be grateful to him. “At least stop calling me Miss Star, I have a name it’s Lilly.” Zack smiles wider and light seems to fill in his eyes. He looks as if he was just told he won a million dollars as he says, “All right Lilly! You have such a beautiful name I suppose I should be using it.” I smile back at him it’s hard to not smile when he does, it’s such a contagious grin I just cannot help myself. I look around at the wilderness and then back to Zack.

“Do you know where we are going or are we just walking blindly in the forest?” He turned around facing in front of us, snapping his fingers. “Glad you asked, Lilly! I am taking us to a nearby town. I have a good friend there, he’s human but I saved his town from monsters, so he should welcome us with open arms.” I don’t like the sound of this, “Should? You don’t sound very sure.” He was looking around in different directions pointing out his left hand like he was trying to find the right direction. “You have little faith in me! We parted on great terms, he even said I was always welcome back there as if it were my home.”

Stolen from its rightful place, this narrative is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

I watched as he struggled to figure out where we were going. “You DO know where we are going right?” He nodded then started walking slightly to the left. “Yes, I know where we are going, again have more faith in me!” He picked up the pace walking quickly through the trees. I try my best to keep up but I’m so exhausted from the hours of walking we have already done. After what felt like an eternity of walking, we finally stop at the tree line just ahead of it was a town. It was so small but so beautiful a little haven in the middle of the forest with nothing else in sight. Zack interrupted my thoughts as he spoke,

“This is Dawn, a small town in the middle of West Virginia.” He looked down at me with his smile. “This will be our new home for a while!” His confidence assured me everything would be all right. I look back at the town taking in every detail about it. The town was separated into two sections, the left is an assortment of medium-sized wood houses. On the right was a shopping area with the addition of a Bar, an Inn, and a little house that looked to be for a mayor or sheriff. A small stream through the middle separated the town in half with a little stone bridge going across it, as well as a park in the very center that bled into either side of the town. It was perfect, it was beautiful, it was everything I could have imagined and more.

I quickly look at Zack feeling a hint of fear through me. “You have a friend here but what about the other humans in the town? What do we do about them?” He laughed to himself shaking his head like I asked the stupidest question. “We use a spell of course that will hide our outer appearance.” I give him a puzzled look, “But I have no magical ability.” His smile grew wider. “Don’t worry about that just give me your hands and trust me.” He holds his hands out to me his palms facing the night sky. I place my hands in his, they feel rough and callused yet soft and warm at the same time. I look into his eyes as he closes them, I can still see hints of the violet color pouring out from the corners of his eyelids.

“Let what is visible become invisible, let the mortal eye only see what it knows, and conceal what should be unknown.” I felt a surge of energy pass through my body from his hands, I saw the purple mist pass from his body onto mine and pass through me. Before I knew anything happened it was over, he pulled his hands away from mine. Grabbing the spear that was floating in the air next to him. I look back to where my tail should be, but it was missing completely! Looking back at Zack his horns and tail were gone! “That’s an amazing spell, Zack. But how was it able to affect me?” He walked closer to the edge of the tree line and then glanced back at me. “I cast the spell for the both of us. So, your spell is currently relying on my magical power, just hope I won’t run out of energy.” He chuckled then held out his left hand to me again. “Now let’s get going, Lilly Star. A new life awaits you.”
