Chapter 3: Powerless

Chapter 3: Powerless

Elias sat bored in his history class. The first day was always like this in every class: introduce yourself and tell them what you’re looking forward to in the coming year. Elias was happy that the class was dismissed and next was "Break" in his schedule. He wasn’t sure what it was so he asked the teacher and she explained that it’s a time put in for students to catch up on any studies or class work, even train themselves. The weight room and the arena would be open at this time to allow for such activities.

Elias wasn’t sure where to go so he just went into his room. Making sure to knock again just in case. He sat on his bed and looked around the room. He decided to look at the window to see what kind of view he had. It wasn’t a great one. Just an alley way below and across was another room. Elias wondered if there was a roof that he could go on for a good view. So he began to walk towards the door.

As he reached for the door it opened and Becca was on the other side. “Hey Elias!” She beamed. “How were your first classes?”

“Boring.”

“Oh you too huh? Well at least it’s break time now. So we can do whatever we want!”

“Yup.” Elias walked past her and started walking towards the stairs.

“Where are you going?” Becca asked a little confused why he was just walking away.

“I’m going to see if there’s a roof I can stand on.”

“Ooh let me come with you!”

“Ok.” Elias said waiting for Becca to put her things away and catch up. Her infectious smile causing Elias to smile as well.

After a couple flights of stairs they had made it to the roof. Becca ran towards the edge with glee and leaned against the railing. “Wow! It’s amazing up here! You had a great spot to go to!”

Elias didn’t say anything and just looked at the view before him. It was a beautiful sight he had to admit. The sun reflecting off of the lake in the near distance surrounded by lush green grass. “You know I kinda wonder what it would look like at sunset or at sunrise.” Elias said out loud.

“You know what? That’s a great idea. We should come back up here later tonight and see just how beautiful it is.”

“Yea... I guess we should.” They spent the rest of their break staring at the view and sharing small talk between each other. Eventually the break was over and regular classes began to resume. Soon it was lunch and they ate on the roof as well. The only difference was that Aaron was with them this time.

Eventually Lunch ended and all three of them happened to have Strength Training class next. In there, the instructor explained safety concerns like using the buddy system and how to properly lift a weight and what to look for when spotting your partner. He also explained the purpose of having strength training. While the Ability Training class was designed to fine tune the abilities to cause more accuracy and in some cases more potency. The Weights Training Class was designed for them to train their muscles to use their abilities much faster and with much more endurance. Either way, SDA specialized in maximizing the raw power, talent and skill in each of its students. It was always known for training the best.

Weight Training was easy for Elias. While he looked slender he could very easily pull some weight. Becca on the other hand, struggled a little when it came to this kind of training. She was slender as well but she struggled to bench just the standard 45 lb bar. Aaron was also part of their group since it was an odd numbered class. He did fine as well. In fact he could lift much more than Elias.

“You’re gonna be really sore tomorrow.” Elias told Becca who was already holding her arms.

“I’m sore right now...” she complained.

“It gets worse.” Aaron said.

“Oh noooo.” She wined.

“Don’t worry. I’ll help you out if you need it.” Elias offered.

“Help me out with what?” She walked over to pick up her backpack and immediately put it back down. “I can’t even carry my back pack.” She complained again.

“Exactly my point.” Elias walked over and picked her backpack up too.

“No no no wait! You don’t need to carry it too! I can do it myself!” Elias began to walk to their next class with it. “Hey! Come back here! Elias!”

Aaron simply laughed and followed them to the Ability Training Class. Class had started and the head instructor began to speak. “Alright everyone quiet down. I know you’re all excited to be in a class where you can use abilities freely.”

The class soon quieted down. “We are going to start with the normal introductions of ourselves. I also want you to state why you came to this school specifically.”

The other students began to introduce themselves. Stating their names and saying that they wanted to be the top hero and that this school gave the best shot. Until it was the trio left that had yet to go.

“I’m Aaron Hughes. I came to this school because I wanted to refine my abilities and use it for good.” Aaron sat down.

“I’m Rebekah Brooks. I came because I want to learn how to best control my ability so I don’t hurt those I’m care about.” She also sat down.

“I’m Elias Roberts. I came because I want to become a great hero for everyone."

Elias could hear the class around him start to murmur. “No way a Roberts!”

“He’s gonna have a sweet ability.”

“I hope I don’t ever have to spar with him.”

“Alright class calm down. Now to start off the class we’re gonna have you students spar with each other. This is for us to see what you’re capable of and what you could need help with.”

The class became silent and anxiously waited to find out who they would fight. The first couple of matches were between students that Elias didn’t know and their abilities varied quite a bit.

Finally it was time for Aaron to fight another student. He and the other student stood on opposite sides of the arena. The instructor started the match and suddenly the other student began to set himself on fire. He began to rush at Aaron who had not moved until suddenly he became a gas cloud. The other student stopped as the cloud approached. The student soon lost his fire as the gas began to suffocate him and his fire. The student was unable to breathe and the instructor called Aaron the victor who had then formed back into himself and checked if the student was alright.

It was now Becca’s turn and she and another student began to take their stands. Becca began to make the first move summoning all of the air around her and sending it towards the other student. The other student suddenly appeared behind Becca and she began to raise her arm to attack. Becca quickly pulled water out from seemingly no where and blasted the girl off the stage and the instructor declared Becca the victor.

“Alright and the final match of tonight. Elias Roberts verses Cole Price.” Cole Price was a 6’ 5” stocky figure with pale pink eyes and wavy light brown hair. He was one of those cocky students that could rally people against someone quite easily.

“Alright Roberts! Let’s see what you’re made of.” Cole took his place on the opposite side of Elias.

“Begin.”

Cole immediately opened up with lightning coming from his fingers giving Elias almost no time to react. Elias narrowly dodged the electricity and had to dodge another one. “Come on Roberts! Don’t just play catch. Hit me with your ability!” Another bolt of lightning sprang towards Elias.

Elias narrowly dodged yet again and Cole got tired of all the dodging so he created a sword made entirely out of electricity. Cole charged straight at Elias. Elias dodged a sweep by Cole and threw a punch at Cole. Cole caught the fist and threw Elias on the ground. Cole discharged his lighting sword at Elias filling him with a dangerous amount of electricity. Elias began to scream in pain.

“Come on Roberts! I haven’t seen your ability at all!” Cole yelled getting impatient while more electricity flowed into Elias enhancing his pain.

“Mr. Price that’s enough. You’re the clear winner here.” The instructor declared. “Go get the nurse.” She told one of the other students. Becca and Aaron ran to Elias’ side and propped him up. He gave a weak smile.

“You-you want to know the truth?” Elias spoke. His voice barley audible in the large room.

Cole looked very upset. “Oh yea. I want to know why you didn’t use your ability on me. Was I not worth your effort?"

“The truth is I’m powerless. I don’t have any powers at all. No combat powers, no enhancing powers, no healing powers. I’m powerless.”

The class became silent at this new knowledge. “Elias...” Becca began to speak.

“No power?!? Not even a little. Ha Elias. The descendant of many great super heroes and you have none at all!!!” Cole began to laugh.

“It’s not funny.” Becca began to defend him.

“It actually really is. You want to become a great super hero and you don’t even have a power! A slime ball has a bigger chance to become a super hero than you do to become one of the best.”

“Cole that’s enough.” Becca said firmly.

“You don’t even deserve that last name. Ooh I’m a Roberts. My mommy and daddy and everyone before them have super strong abilities but I have none. Ooh look at me. How much do I gotta pay you to change your last name? You’re a pathetic wretch.”

Becca’s fist began to glow red with fire. She was about to launch a fire ball at Cole but Elias grabbed her hand and smiled weakly. “It’s fine Becca. He is right.” Elias quickly lost consciousness after he said this and soon the nurse arrived.
