Chapter 25: Runaways

Chapter 25: Runaways

I laid down the Chief's table, as they were no beds here. Agh..my back hurts. Most importantly, what is going on?

"There's no "actual witches" here, you know."

Said the Chief, who was seemingly calm about all of this. Well, I guess I should be too. After all, I'm infront of a living, walking skeleton ruling over a town and a persona-changing witch, which she proclaims to be. Then there's me, the immortal one who just wants to find a way to die.

"God, Mr. Xin, for you to pass out without even doing anything, hahaha."

She laughed at me and then smiled, with a smug look expressed over her face. Her eyes also changed to blue. What's the deal with her eye color changing all the time?

"Hey, Mira..?"

"Yeah?"

"The hell is up with your eyes?"

I arrogantly said. I tried to politely phrase it but it just slipped out of my mouth..

"Ummm..."

Her eyes changed to green, which led me to being more curious about the matter. I wonder how pigmentation works in her iris.

"I told you, I'm a witch."

"Yeah, I know you are, but I was asking about why your eye color changes."

I remember that her eyes were gray the last time I called her an angel, which I know for a fact that she isn't now. Although gray isn't really bright, she managed to make it look shiny, somehow..

Wait... the last time I called her an angel? That was when she was acting all... innocently.

"The eye colors.. varies on what-"

I interrupted her shortly after she was saying that. I managed to figure it out. Her eye color varies on what emotions she's feeling.

"It varies on emotions, doesn't it?"

I pridely said, while still laying down.

"No, it varies on what personality responds better to the given situation."

Her eyes changed to yellow this time.

"Oh..."

I said, while I was trying not to look at her.

The Chief was just sitting down. He was acting like he was watching a movie, because he didn't move an inch from where he's sitting. He just stared at us, then laughed when I looked at him.

"You guys are amazing..! Hahahaha!"

He shouted, while still laughing.

"Chief..? Are you ok?"

"Yes, hahahaha! Do you have any idea how many adventurers went and headed here, only to get defeated by one of those things? A fuck ton!"

He exclaimed, then he stood up.

"Wait... oh."

Mira said it as the same way I said it earlier. It seems like she made a big blunder. Of course, I figured it out as well.

"Xin, umm, I.. I kinda.."

"Yeah, I know."

She just realized it now that she killed every last one of those Dekus, and there's a possibility that the adventurers also got possesed by them.

She was horrified of what she did. Her eyes changed to orange.

"Oh well, that's that."

Then it reverted to yellow. She changed her mind faster than her attacks, it seems.

The Chief, who I guess was laughing because happiness, walked to a window in his room. He saw the hundreds of bones piled up in a minecart, and was still laughing.

Our Rails then lit up, and I guess that was the indication of a mission being completed.

"Yeah! I guess the reward will return to me in a few days.."

What? The reward... being returned?

"Wait, what the hell do you mean?!"

I shouted. Mira doesn't look unfazed, as if she already knew what the Chief was going to say.

"You need to present your Rails in order to claim the reward. If no one claims it, it returns to me, the one who requested the quest, after 3 days."

"But, I can claim it, y'know."

Mira responded, while I was getting more and more worried.

"You can, but can he?"

The Chief's eyehole began to light up.. blue??

"See, they didn't elect me as the Chief for nothing."

His eyes lit up blue, and it felt like it was producing blue flames. He's like the one from that game, UnderQuest.

"You both are hiding something big, right?"

Mira's eyes became fiery red, and she was readying to attack the Chief. I stopped her, of course.

"Yeah, I guess I am. Why?"

The cat's out of the bag. Why not just tell them now..

Mira looked at me with an unexplainable expression on her face. She was pretending to be.. shocked? Did she already noticed..?

I let out a big sigh, and told the 2 of them..

"I'm not the owner of this Rai.. Wait, where is it?"

My stolen Rail suddenly vanished from my pocket. Did they take it while I was passed out?

It seems like they did, as the Chief was waving the Rail right infront of me.

"Oh, damn it."

"Why are there no quests here, huh? Care to explain? Or will I?"

"Are you threatening me?"

I said, because it feels like he was.

"No, I'm just really curious, is all."

The chief said, while smiling.

"Ok then, I'm not that Xin guy on the rail."

The Chief nodded faster and faster..

"My name is actually Nyx. Nyx Kriel."

The room froze and was in total silence. Why, did I say something.. oh. Oh fuck.

"YOU'RE A FUGITIVE?!"

The Chief shouted. I thought he was going to stand, jump out, and call the Quest hall but after shouting, he stood up, and sat down again.

"Oh hey, I guess we're all fugitives here, huh."

He said..

Wait, what?

"Fugitives?!"

"Yeah, I was human once, you know. After dying, someone revived all of us, although we really didn't follow him because he was a total piece of shit."

"I can believe you as one.. but what about.."

"Her? You don't know her?"

"Uhh no, I don't. I know she's Mira, but what do you mean?"

I just went with the flow. I don't care anymore.. but if she's a fugitive, then how does she have a working Rail?

"I didn't recognize her at first, but I know now.. She's the-"

I interrupted someone, again. Look, I need answers, fast.

"How did you get a proper working rail if you're a fugitive?!"

She was puzzled, because instead of being in awe on who she was, I asked her about the Rail. She then looked at me like I was stupid or something.

"You do know there's a place where you can forge Rails, right?"

"YOU CAN FORGE RAILS?!"

And I went to the trouble of killing someone just to get my hands on another Rail. Why the HELL DID NO ONE TELL ME ABOUT THIS?!

She sighed heavily, and looked at me with concern. Why the hell do you keep looking at me like that?! I didn't know you can forge Rails!

"Nyx.. Kriel..? That name kept popping in all of the cities that I go to. Of course, I disguise myself."

Oh, so that's how he knew about me?

"You do know that you're now one of the most wanted men in the entire continent, right?"

Oh yeah, I guess I was. It's tiring to move to cities just to get a decent drink, you know?

"Going back.. who are you, Mira?"

The Chief's eye went all blue flame again, and I guess he already knows who she is.

"Oho.. ok.. Look, I won't sell you guys out. You helped my townsfolk, so I am in your debt. If you're doubting me, then here."

He gave me a pendant. But why, though?

"Give this to them, and they'll know who I am. Now, you can say whatever you want to say to each other."

"A pendant.. huh.."

"I own that, and I leave pendants like that to the crimes I comitted. So if you give it to them, they'll know who I am, and if I sell you out, they can track where I am. It's now a loss for me, so go on."

Agh, I didn't really want to know who she is, so I'll just go outside.

"Nah, it's all good. She can keep her identity a secret, as long as she tells me where the forgeries are made."

I went out, and tried to help the skeletons reassemble their bodies.

-----

The two of them were left in the Chief's room. The Chief tried to confirm something because of what his eye sees.

"Huh, you reluctantly agreed? That's odd."

"How did you..?"

"And you..? A newcomer? Hahahaha, that's really strange."

"Get to the point."

"You're a fugitive because you tried to help her, right? And now you're with him because of her. You were depressed because of that, weren't you?"

"Who, what are you talking about?"

"She told you to kept an eye on her, right? You can't fool me."

"..Tsk. I guess I really shouldn't had taken this quest."

"You're with the bandit boss.. no, more specifically, the Undying Queen of the North, right?"
