Chapter 1.0: ‘under the tree’
Year: 2483 Month: May 25th
The rustling of the leaves and the gentle touch of the breeze had always put kai straight to sleep. Up on his favourite spot north of London, he lay under the old oak tree. Cloudless skies were expected for all this week. Perfect for relaxation away from the noise of the city. His phone ruins the tranquillity. His brother, Kent, was calling. Kai declined the call and sat up, time to go home. Grabbing his guitar case, he walks to the top of the hill and slings it onto his back. He takes a deep breath as he looks over London. How long has it been, three years? He shrugs it off and slides down the hill, he hops on to his bike and starts down the path.
The streets of London were as dead as ever, endless crowds of people filled the streets all moving as if connected to the same mind. Traffic clogged the roads and the air reeked of smog. He pushes his bike through the bustling crowds, avoiding the occasional pigeon that would squeeze its way in. Kai notices an old man staring at him oddly from in an alleyway, the man had cloudy grey eyes and was mouthing words Kai couldn’t quite make out, shying away from the man’s gaze he puts up his hood and quickly moves on. Almost home.

He arrives at his apartment, fumbling with the keys, he opens the door and wheels his bike inside. He locks the door behind him. The kitchen smelt of damp and spoilt milk. The wallpaper was peeling off and the sink was still blocked. His brother Kent is sat on the sofa, playing solitaire by himself. Kai decides not to bother him and heads to his room, hoping to go unnoticed. Just as he grabs his rooms door handle Kent calls out to him. Kai flinches.
‘’where were you this time?’’
Struggling to find words kai blurts out ‘’Just taking a walk, getting some fresh air’’. Kent turns around and squints at him.
‘’Then why the guitar?’’
Kai doesn’t answer.
Kent chuckles ‘’Under that tree again? You need to be more careful, you don’t know who could be out there’’
Kai nods and turns to open his bedroom door. Kent is right, but he’s not going to listen. He enters his room and takes down his hood. He places his guitar case at the end of his bed and sits at his desk. His room was nothing more than the bed and desk, the window was broken and his only ‘wardrobe’ was a small wooden box in the corner of the room that Kent made out of an old drawer. Still, this apartment was the only place remotely safe in London for Him. Even the government wanted him after all. He had to stay low, only Kent could work so they had to settle with this terrible apartment and food was mainly just microwaveable meals they usually ate cold. Life was miserable, but it was still life, so Kai didn’t complain often. He sighs and removes his shoes, chucking them into a corner and then slumping onto his bed. He just has to stay hidden, for his sake and for Kent’s. Rolling over, he closes his eyes.
