Pokémon Legacies: Whispering Echoes
CHAPTER 10. “A Turbulent Test”

CHAPTER 10. “A Turbulent Test”

The early sun painted the vast field with a warm glow as Ash Ketchum delved into his morning exercise routine. The expansive landscape of his home provided the perfect backdrop for his training, a routine he cherished far more than the confinements of a traditional gym. By his side, his loyal companions—Incineroar, Infernape, and Primeape—joined him in the rhythmic cadence of physical exertion. The bond between Trainer and Pokémon flourished under the open sky, a testament to the unique synergy they’ve shared after many years.

As the trio of powerful Pokémon assisted Ash in his workout, the field echoed with the sounds of their efforts. Incineroar's flames flickered with controlled intensity, Infernape showcased its agile prowess, and Primeape unleashed punches with lightning speed. The harmonious blend of human and Pokémon energy created a dynamic exercise experience that reflected Ash's preference for the freedom and communion with nature that only these outdoor sessions could provide.

Amidst the sound of clashing fists and energetic roars, Serena approached, her country attire blending with the rich nature of the place. She carried lunch to start the day with a family meeting. Alongside her was little Soren, cheerfully bringing a tray of refreshing beverages to his father. Ash paused his routine to greet his wife and thank his son for the thoughtful gesture. As he dismissed his partners, the family sat down under the tree and began their breakfast.

"Any news about Elysia?" Ash inquired, Pikachu perching on his shoulder as he shared a piece of his meal with his partner.

"She promised to call this morning, so let's be patient. It is a different time zone from Kanto to Galar, after all," Serena responded as she called for her Sylveon to join them for a meal.

Soren quickly polished off his breakfast and, with his usual enthusiasm, gathered his pencils and paper. These were his steadfast companions whenever he explored their home's expansive field. Serena attempted to persuade him to stay a little longer, but when Soren's curiosity was piqued, there was little that could detain him.

"Are you taking Soren to the Academy today?" Ash inquired, watching as his son embarked on another artistic adventure.

Serena nodded, her face lighting up with delight as she savored a bite of her meal. "My gosh! This cake Bonnie brought from that new patisserie in Lumiose City is just delicious!"

Amused by his wife's charming reaction, Ash laughed. "You know, the exhibition matches' season is coming up soon, starting with Kalos and Paldea hosting the events. If we organize our schedules, we could attend and taste every one of them!"

"Perfect timing for our anniversary," Serena declared, playfully moving her hand as if her fingers were walking toward Ash's hand. He received her with tenderness, and both touched their foreheads in a sweet display of their affection.

"Stay here today," Ash suggested with playful mischief, a twinkle in his eye.

Serena chuckled, her affectionate gaze meeting his. "Sorry, love. But Shauna and Tierno just arrived for the workshop's special week, and I must be there."

Ash nodded understandingly, not pressing the matter further. "Remember that today is Elysia's first gym challenge ever. I'll catch you up at the Academy to watch it along with the rest."

Suddenly, the Rotom pad accompanying Serena gave a cheerful notification, signaling an incoming call from Elysia. Serena's eyes lit up, and she grinned, saying, "Speaking of the little devil," as she picked up the call.

"Elysia! Good morning, Pikacharm!" Ash greeted with warmth, Pikachu offering a cheerful greeting with a playful "Pika!"

"Morning, Dad! Hi, Mom! And Pikachu!" Elysia responded, her face beaming on the screen. She adjusted the angle to show the Turffield leafy entrance behind her, and her Gible standing proudly at her side.

Serena smiled warmly. "How's your journey going, dear? Tell us everything."

Elysia began recounting her adventures of the past few days. She shared tales of training with wild Pokémon and her efforts to help Gible overcome its unease around large crowds. As she spoke, the screen occasionally showed snippets of Turffield's picturesque surroundings.

"We've been working hard, and Gible is making great progress," Elysia assured her parents. "Oh, and you should've seen us in the Slumbering Weald! Owen, Adrian, and I encountered some thieves trying to steal the Rusted Sword and Shield. But don't worry, we managed to stop them. Adrian's psychic abilities were a huge help!"

Serena's eyes widened with concern. "Thieves? Are you all right, Pikacharm?"

Elysia nodded. "We're fine, Mom, really. Besides, both you and dad told me about these guys who always tried to steal Pikachu without any success, and you managed to put them in their place. So don’t worry too much."

Serena understandably at his daughter’s explanation added, "Always stay vigilant, Elysia. And it's great that you and your friends were able to handle the situation. Keep up the good work, Trainer!"

Ash grinned, his eyes sparkling with pride. "By the way, Elysia, after we witnessed your first battle, I told your mother that I was confident you'd do great on your first gym challenge."

Elysia looked surprised. "How could you witness it? It's quite a long distance between here and Kanto."

Serena chimed in with a playful smile. "Well, your battle became quite the trending topic on social media for a short time. They were talking about the Monarch’s daughter who won her first match against some trainer and his Sobble. I suppose this is your friend Owen?"

Elysia's eyes widened, and a smile crept onto her face. "A-And what do you think about it? Was I good?"

Ash nodded proudly. "Of course you were! Though… I couldn't help but notice that you had a bit of a struggle with Gible's Scale Shot attack. But hey, in the end, you managed to overcome it. Great job, Elysia!"

Elysia's expression shifted with a mix of pride and inner concern. The mention of Gible's ongoing struggle reminded her of the challenges that lay ahead. She quickly brushed off her worries, putting on a brave smile. "Oh, don't worry, Dad. We're working on it, and everything's going to be fine. Gible and I will get through this and make you proud, you'll see!"

Ash observed the change in her demeanor but chose not to press further. Instead, he tried to reassure her, "Oh, Pikacharm. You don’t need to make us…"

“Good bye, mom and dad! Wish me luck!”

And with that, she swiftly ended the call. Ash and Serena exchanged glances, a mixture of parental pride and a touch of concern for their daughter's journey.

"Always on the move," Serena remarked with amusement, watching the Rotom pad as Elysia ended the call abruptly. "She didn't even say hi to Soren."

Ash, his gaze lingering on the spot where the call had just ended, couldn't help but smile. "She's got the same spirit I had at her age. Always eager for the next adventure."

Serena chuckled. "Like father, like daughter. Are you worried about her, love?"

Ash's expression became contemplative. Turffield Gym was Elysia's first challenge in a region known for its tough competition. While she had grown up around Pokémon and battles, the Galar region presented a different level of challenge.

"I know she's strong, but Galar’s champion made sure to make the region tougher than ever. I just hope she's ready for what's coming."

Serena placed a reassuring hand on Ash's shoulder. "She's got your determination, and she's been preparing for this her whole life. Elysia will find her way, just like you always have."

With a nod, Ash appreciated Serena's comforting words. As the couple proceeded to continue with their schedule, thoughts of their daughter's journey in Galar lingered in the air. Whatever challenges and outcomes awaited her, they were sure she was going to face them head-on.

----------------------------------------

Elysia took a deep breath, her sigh echoing a mix of nervous anticipation for the upcoming Gym Challenge and a tinge of regret for withholding the truth from her parents about the Team Rocket connection. She paced a bit in front of Turffield's entrance, Gible mirroring her unease with subtle fidgeting.

Gible noticed Elysia's tension and nuzzled against her, seeking comfort. "Easy, Gible. It's just nerves," Elysia reassured her Pokémon.

She leaned against a nearby lamppost, contemplating her decision to keep the Team Rocket involvement a secret. "I didn't want to worry them," she muttered to herself. "Dad has a history with Team Rocket, and I didn't want to add unnecessary stress."

Gazing at Gible’s unease expression, Elysia acknowledged, "But maybe I should've been more honest. We're a team, after all."

Turffield welcomed Elysia with a serene charm, its houses arranged like a mosaic within the terraced fields, creating a picturesque scene that perfectly blended the tranquility of rural life with the excitement of a bustling town. The aroma of blooming flowers and the distant hum of Pokémon filled the air.

Elysia, carrying Gible in her arms, strolled through the quaint streets, her Meowth also joined the adventure, gracefully walking alongside her. The trio explored the town, absorbing its unique atmosphere. The town seemed to hold secrets within its cobbled pathways and cozy dwellings. As she wandered, Elysia couldn't help but notice the towering geoglyph on the hillside to the west. Its massive form depicted a Pokémon of colossal proportions beneath a swirling cloud of darkness, an artistic rendering that evoked both awe and mystery. Intrigued, Elysia made her way toward the hill, her Meowth purring contentedly by her side.

Upon reaching the top, she discovered a sturdy Stonjourner face board, a whimsical touch for visitors to engage with the geoglyph. Elysia couldn't resist posing along with her Pokémon with the cutout, capturing the moment as a delightful memory of their journey through the unique town. As they enjoyed the scenic view, Elysia noticed a plaque placed at the top of the hill, right next to the face board. The plaque bore a detailed description of the geoglyph's story, explaining how it depicted the Darkest Night phenomenon, where numerous Pokémon underwent the Dynamax process.

The text on the plaque concluded with a special thanks to those who unraveled the mystery behind the geoglyph, and Elysia's smile widened as she read the names engraved – her father, Ash Ketchum, and Goh. The realization that her family played a part in uncovering the town's secrets added a layer of pride to the picturesque surroundings.

The heart of Turffield unveiled its gem – the gym stadium, a structure that stood in stark contrast to the rustic charm of the surrounding architecture. Elysia approached the imposing building, feeling the weight of anticipation and uncertainty settle on her shoulders. As she contemplated the challenges that awaited within, her internal musings were abruptly interrupted by a familiar, cheerful voice that echoed through the air.

"Hey! Elysia! You're finally here!" Owen exclaimed, appearing in her line of sight with an exuberant smile.

"H-Hello, Owen. Always arriving at the right moment. How’s everything going?" Elysia greeted him, grateful for the timely distraction from her contemplative thoughts.

"Doing great! Look!" Owen eagerly retrieved his Almanac and proudly displayed a picture of an individual unfamiliar to Elysia. The image sparked her curiosity, and she couldn't help but inquire about the newfound face in Owen's collection.

The man captured in the photo seemed to be around Elysia's father's age, showcasing a distinguished presence reminiscent of the former Monarch, Leon. His brown skin, deep blueish-purple hair neatly arranged in a manly braid, and olive eyes suggested an uncanny familial connection. Clad in the typical Galarian gym leader's uniform adorned with the number 750, he seamlessly blended athletic attire with the garb of a dedicated researcher, donning a lab coat and sporting glasses. The amalgamation of sporting style and scholarly accessories hinted at a person with multiple talents among the Galar’s gym leaders roster.

"Indeed, that's Hop! Turffield's gym leader and the younger brother of the former Monarch," Owen exclaimed, closing his Almanac with a satisfied grin.

Elysia, recalling mentions of the gym leader from one of the PokeBanter Crew's episodes and her dad’s stories, finally acknowledged, "Hop! Right, I heard about him. You got his autograph, huh? How's he?"

Owen responded energetically, "He's as cool as Leon! Don't underestimate him. Sure, he's a researcher most of the time, but he's pretty strong. Be ready for a tough battle!"

"Have you fought him already?" Elysia inquired.

Owen nodded, adding that beyond battling Hop, he sensed that he was trying to impart knowledge about Pokémon compatibility and type advantages during their encounter. Proudly displaying his dynamax band—a symbol of victory in the first gym challenge—on his wrist, Owen's accomplishment fueled Elysia's determination. Her initial concerns dissipated, replaced by newfound confidence, spurred by the desire to catch up to her friend.

"Don't use your dynamax band yet, okay, Owen?" Elysia advised. "Wait until I win mine, so we can test them together!"

Owen excitedly nodded, wishing Elysia good luck in her upcoming battle and promising to watch the match.

Elysia, accompanied by Gible and Meowth, stepped into the stadium with palpable excitement. The moment she crossed the threshold, however, she was greeted not by the typical battlefield but by a surreal spectacle. The interior of the stadium resembled a bio dome, with diverse Pokémon—many native to Galar—interacting in a setting that mimicked their natural habitat. The vibrant atmosphere extended beyond the Pokémon, as trainers and visitors alike marveled at the unique scenery. Amidst the captivating tableau, the gym staff guided those interested in exploring the intricacies of the biome. Elysia couldn't help but feel a mix of confusion and amazement, absorbing the unexpected spectacle before her first gym challenge.

Elysia took a moment to explore the vibrant bio dome, where an Indeedee and a Galarian Zigzagoon approached her Gible and Meowth with evident curiosity. The Pokémon exchanged growls, establishing a unique form of communication. A genuine smile adorned Elysia's face as she witnessed this impromptu Pokémon interaction, appreciating the delightful scene within the stadium.

Amidst the enchanting atmosphere, a man's voice broke through the ambient sounds.

"Good afternoon. Are you looking for something specific?" Hop greeted her warmly, a Grookey perched on his right arm also cheeringly joined in Elysia’s reception.

Intrigued, Elysia turned to meet the speaker. Recognizing the individual from the picture Owen had shared earlier, she nodded in acknowledgment.

“Sorry, did I startle you?” Hop asked.

Elysia shook her head. "No need to apologize. I was actually looking for you," she replied. "I'm Elysia, and I—"

"No need for introductions. I already know who you are," Hop interrupted, a warm smile on his face. "It's an honor to face the daughter of the one who defeated my brother Leon, years ago. Your family has a strong legacy in this region, and it's always a pleasure to welcome a challenger with such a renowned background. How's your journey so far?"

But before Elysia could respond, Owen once again interrupted the moment with his usual excitement.

“Hey, Mr. Hop! Here she is! The one I talked about yesterday!”

Hop welcomed Owen with a friendly greeting, acknowledging their battle from the previous day and confirming Elysia's arrival. Elysia, curious about the unique environment within the Stadium, couldn't help but ask Hop about the natural reserve.

“Follow me. It’s better if I tell you about it while we reach the battlefield,” Hop said.

As they walked through the vibrant and lively surroundings, they witnessed a diverse array of Pokémon, each engaging in their own activities. Colorful Butterfree fluttered gracefully, a group of Yamper played near a pond, and a serene Gossifleur swayed gently in the breeze. Elysia and Owen exchanged glances, their expressions reflecting a mix of awe and appreciation for the harmonious coexistence of trainers, visitors, and Pokémon in this unconventional gym setting.

“It’s quite a tale,” Hop began to explain the transformation of the Gym Stadium amid this living spectacle. "After Macro Cosmos’ scandal, they pulled out its funding for the Pokémon League, so people who depended significantly on Pokémon League Battles had to come up with a plan. In this town, they wanted to preserve Turffield's rustic charm and its connection to nature, so they decided to merge the gym stadium with the town's natural culture. What you see now is a blend of gym battles, nature, and history."

He continued elaborating on the evolution of the stadium into a research and education center, emphasizing its significance in promoting a deeper understanding of Galar's rich biodiversity. "This place has become not just a battleground, but a hub for those who want to immerse themselves in the natural world and history of our region," Hop explained as they continued their stroll. The vibrant scenes around them added an extra layer of charm to his words.

As Elysia, Owen, and Hop strolled through the unique environment of Turffield Stadium, they couldn't escape the curious glances of some trainers and visitors. A few individuals took out their devices, seemingly confirming suspicions or recognizing Elysia's identity.

Upon reaching the battlefield nestled in the heart of the reserve, surrounded by lush trees, Hop remarked on the peculiar fusion of Turffield Stadium. He shared that many had initially doubted the unconventional approach, much like his own journey. Hop, initially a trainer with the goal of surpassing his brother, discovered a love for research, ultimately merging both passions into his role as a gym leader and colleague to his sister in law.

"It's quite amusing, really," Hop mused. "At first, even I had my doubts, but now, it's become this incredible blend of battling, nature, and knowledge. Life takes unexpected turns, doesn't it?" he said with a smile, the vibrant atmosphere around them enhancing the sentiment.

"Did you like our reserve, Elysia?" Hop asked as he took his place on the battleground.

Elysia nodded. "I think it's beautiful, and the story behind it added to its charm."

Hop chuckled, making a gesture to one of the workers as if he requested him to be the judge of the upcoming battle. The time had finally come, and Elysia had to focus on the battle, her first obstacle toward her objective. Many thoughts crossed her mind.

"Good luck, Elysia! I'll cheer for you!" Owen declared from the spectator stands. "By the way, can I take pictures of your battle?"

"Yeah! Take as many as you want!" Elysia responded, appreciating that Owen had learned a bit more about boundaries. Then, many trainers and visitors arrived at the battleground, curious and anxious to witness the upcoming first gym battle of the young person of interest. All of them got their devices ready, making Elysia a bit concerned and annoyed about the attention she was receiving.

"Before we begin, let me tell you something, Elysia," Hop declared, redirecting Elysia's focus from the curious crowd. "As the first gym, I want my challengers, especially new ones, to not only test their skills and bonds with their Pokémon, but I also want them to learn something important for upcoming challenges. I won't tell you what, but considering your upbringing, I’m pretty sure you will find out."

Elysia nodded, appreciating Hop's words. She then called for her Meowth. The steel feline took its place, showing its sharp claws while taking its battle position. The referee initiated the battle conditions. Challenger Elysia vs. gym leader Hop. A 2 vs. 2 battle where only the challenger could recall and change her Pokémon. If she emerged victorious, not only would she advance to the next challenger, but she would also receive her own dynamax band. The referee reminded everyone that, as a general rule for the first gym challenge only, even if she lost, she could try again.

The last part relieved some of Elysia's concerns, but she had no intentions of failing so soon. The stage was set for her first gym challenge, and the weight of expectations, coupled with the buzzing attention of the spectators, fueled her determination.

As the trainers and visitors picked up their devices, the buzz of excitement filled the air, and numerous recording devices were raised, capturing the anticipation of the upcoming battle. Some even began streaming the event to share it with a broader audience.

“Remember, Elysia. Turffield may not host dynamax battles anymore, but this is the place where every challenger’s tale and fandom truly begins in Galar!” Hop declared, standing on his side of the field and with his Grookey cheering for him.

Meanwhile, hundreds of miles away at the Performer's Academy, Serena finally found the live feed she was searching for on her Rotom pad. Surrounded by colleagues, students, and staff from the academy, she projected the device onto the giant screen in the academy's reception area. They were all ready to watch Elysia's match. Ash and Pikachu hurriedly entered the building at an extremely fast pace. The Monarch barely had time to exchange greetings with everyone before he asked Serena if the battle had already begun.

“Go, big sis! I know you will win!” little Soren cheered for his sister, his enthusiasm infectiously spreading through everyone present. The stage was set, and the audience eagerly awaited the commencement of Elysia's first gym challenge.

“Let’s go, Stonjourner!” Hop's voice echoed through the gym as he called for his first Pokémon. The rock-type creature took its battle position, emitting a low growl that reverberated within the stadium.

“Meowth! I count on you!” Elysia's voice resonated in response, expressing confidence in her new partner. The feline determinedly gazed at its opponent, ready to prove itself after Elysia welcomed it into her team.

“Good. I’m glad to see a pragmatic approach to this challenge,” Hop congratulated her, his Grookey joining in the excitement with its own growl. “But it will require more than a type advantage to win this battle. Stonjourner, use Rock Throw!”

The stadium erupted with the sound of rocks being hurled through the air as Stonjourner unleashed its attack.

Elysia skillfully commanded her Meowth to gracefully evade the rocks thrown by Stonjourner. The feline Pokémon's agility, possibly honed during its time with the Meowth Troupe, allowed it to dodge with finesse. Seizing the opportunity, Elysia followed up with a direct Metal Claw, aiming to capitalize on the opening.

However, Hop demonstrated his strategic prowess by anticipating such a straightforward move. As Meowth closed in for the attack, Stonjourner responded with a swift Rock Tomb, sending boulders hurtling toward Meowth. The rocks surrounded the steel-type Pokémon, limiting its movement and inflicting some damage. Fortunately, Meowth's type resistance helped mitigate the impact.

Concerned for her partner, Elysia asked, "Are you all right, Meowth?" The resilient Pokémon stood up, shaking off the effects of the hit and displaying its tenacity. Recognizing the challenge ahead and the difference between battling a gym leader and facing wild Pokémon, Elysia knew she couldn't afford to get overconfident.

Hop, recognizing the impact of Stonjourner's Rock Tomb, decided to capitalize on Meowth's reduced speed. He opted for another Rock Throw, aiming to exploit the situation. Elysia, aware of the challenge, commanded Meowth to dodge once more. However, the steel Pokémon struggled to execute the maneuver smoothly, and its increasing breathlessness became evident.

From the spectator stands, Owen couldn't help but cheer, offering words of encouragement to Meowth. Elysia acknowledged the support but realized that a change in strategy was necessary. Dodging was no longer a viable option, prompting Elysia to rethink her approach.

Hop, seizing the opportunity, commanded another Rock Throw. This time, Elysia adjusted her strategy, ordering Meowth to use Metal Claw directly against the incoming rocks. The steel feline unleashed its strength, breaking the thrown rocks into hundreds of small pebbles that scattered across the battlefield.

“Now, that was interesting,” Hop acknowledged, impressed by Elysia's quick thinking. “But then what?”

As he commanded another Rock Tomb, Elysia attempted the same strategy as before, instructing Meowth to break the boulders before they hit. This time, the simultaneous assault proved more challenging to counter, and despite Meowth managing to avoid some of the rocks, others found their mark. The damage accumulated, and Meowth's reduced speed made reading Stonjourner's attacks increasingly difficult.

Elysia, feeling the pressure, urged Meowth to hang in there, realizing that her strategy had not been as effective as she hoped. Stonjourner remained unscathed, and Meowth was visibly fatigued and injured. Meanwhile, whispers and comments from the spectators hinted at disappointment, emphasizing the high expectations associated with Elysia's lineage.

Back at the Performer's Academy, where Elysia's family and friends watched the battle, an atmosphere of anticipation and anxiety filled the room. Ash, trying to boost morale, encouraged his daughter with a hopeful, "Come on, Pikacharm! You can do it." The outcome of the battle hung in the balance as Elysia faced a formidable opponent in Hop's Stonjourner.

From the spectators' stand, the atmosphere had shifted into one of criticism and subtle disappointment. Some trainers and visitors seemed to be more focused on how Elysia would succumb to the challenges rather than rallying behind her recovery. Owen keenly perceived the change in expressions, clenching his fists in frustration as cynical remarks continued to overshadow Elysia's efforts.

Amidst the skeptical crowd, Owen's attention was diverted by the arrival of a young boy’s solemn voice.

"Don't pay them attention, Owen. It's easier to criticize when you are not the one in a hot spot," Adrian advised, standing beside the young trainer.

"Hey, Adrian. I'm glad you're here," Owen responded, his frustration easing with the presence of his acquaintance.

"I wouldn't miss my dear friend's first gym challenge, especially when she seems to be in such a difficult spot," Adrian declared with his usual stoic tone.

"You arrived at the perfect moment, then. She will need all our support," Owen acknowledged, appreciating the solidarity among friends during Elysia's challenging battle.

Undeterred by the tightening circumstances, Elysia thought about how she could adapt her strategy. There seemed to be no better option rather than to switch her partner. However, Hop, confident in his control of the battle, decided to capitalize on the situation.

"Time to end this now," he muttered to himself before giving the order, "Stonjourner, use Block!"

A beam in the shape of an "X" was shot from Stonjourner towards Meowth, a move that surprised both Elysia and her Pokémon. Undeterred, Elysia decided to proceed with her plan.

"Meowth, return!" she commanded, but to her bewilderment, the red light beam from the Poké Ball was interrupted, and her Steel-type partner remained on the battlefield. Confusion set in as she tried again, without success.

"H-Hey, what's going on?" Owen wondered, concerned about the unexpected turn of events and even forgetting about his own cameras. "Did the Poké Ball break or something?"

"No, it's Block's effect," Adrian explained with precision. "That move prevents Pokémon from switching during a battle. It's quite a useful resource when you have your opponent cornered. I'm afraid to say this, but now Elysia has few chances to win with Meowth unless she has an ace up her sleeve."

Owen, frustrated by the revelation, clenched his fists but rallied in support. "Let's go, Elysia! I know you can!" he cheered, urging her to find a way out of the challenging predicament.

"Use Rock Throw twice, Stonjourner!" Hop commanded, and the rock Pokémon launched one projectile after another. Elysia, undeterred, ordered Meowth to use Metal Claw to break the rocks, just as they had attempted earlier. However, Meowth managed to break only the first one, taking a direct hit from the second that launched it and finally knocked it down.

"Meowth cannot continue! Stonjourner is the victor!" declared the referee, signaling the end of the battle.

Elysia closed her eyes momentarily, as if trying to come to terms with the defeat. She then called Meowth back to its Poké Ball and expressed her gratitude for its valiant effort. Owen, though disappointed, couldn't help but continue cheering for Elysia. "Great effort, Elysia! You'll get him next time!"

Over the giant screen at the Performer's Academy, Serena and Ash exchanged glances, both sharing a sense of deep understanding of the challenges she was now facing on her journey. Pikachu, though concerned, wore a determined expression, showing his unwavering support.

Though Elysia appreciated the unwavering support from her friends, she was now concerned about her predicament. She had to be extra careful, since now Gible had to defeat both of Hop’s Pokémon.

"Go, Gible! Let’s not waste Meowth’s effort!" she exclaimed. The shiny dragon leaped into action, emitting an energetic growl that echoed through the stadium, capturing the attention of the spectators who had been less than impressed by Elysia's earlier performance.

"That is indeed a rarity," Hop remarked, acknowledging the uniqueness of Elysia's Gible. "You have the type advantage again, Elysia. Make sure to use it to your benefit."

Elysia, now wearing a more serious expression, didn't hesitate.

"Gible, use Sand Tomb!" she commanded. With Stonjourner's poor speed, it struggled to evade the super-effective attack and ended up trapped in the swirling vortex of sand.

"Great! She got it!" Owen cheered, returning his focus to controlling his mini drones for capturing the battle.

"A better start than before, but it’s just the beginning," added Adrian.

As the dust cloud settled, Elysia and Gible demonstrated a newfound strategy against Hop's Stonjourner. Anticipating the use of Rock Tomb to decrease Gible's speed, Elysia ordered her partner to use Dragon Breath, intercepting the incoming rocks and creating an explosion that generated a dust cloud, obscuring Stonjourner's vision.

In response to the unexpected turn of events, Hop ordered Stonjourner to standby, anticipating the moment when Gible would reappear with another attack. The seconds felt like an eternity for the spectators, from those in the stands of Turffield Stadium to Elysia's family watching from Kanto.

“Got it,” Elysia confidently said. “Gible, use Dragon Breath!”

Gible, unnoticed in the dust, emerged from the right side of Stonjourner, delivering the attack. However, Hop, displaying quick thinking, commanded Stonjourner to use Rock Tomb with opportune timing. Gible's Dragon Breath hit Stonjourner's small face, but the rock-type Pokémon retaliated by launching its own attack. Surrounding Gible with boulders, Stonjourner inflicted damage and speed reduction on the little dragon.

Gible hit the ground but managed to stand up slowly. Stonjourner, however, remained on the battlefield, unable to continue. The referee declared Gible the winner, marking Elysia's first victory in the gym challenge. The weight of the battle seemed to lift from her shoulders, and a sigh of relief escaped her as the tension she had been carrying since the beginning began to dissipate.

"Well done, Elysia!" Owen's cheers echoed through the stadium, accompanied by applause and acclaims from the spectators. On the streaming platform, some of the negative comments transformed into more optimistic, though still slightly unpleasant remarks. Serena and Soren joined in the celebration, but Ash retained a cautious expression.

Despite the victory, Elysia noticed Gible's anxiety and nervousness amplified by the noise and commotion of the crowd.

"You're doing great, Gible. Hang in there a bit more!" she encouraged, acknowledging the emotional toll the battle had taken on her shiny dragon partner.

Hop, having thanked Stonjourner for its effort, called it back into its Poké Ball.

“Well done, Elysia. But remember, this has just begun,” he said.

With a confident smile, he took his second Poké Ball and summoned Yamper. The electric canine entered the battlefield with a cute yet determined bark, its tongue sticking out as it panted with anticipation.

As Yamper excitedly wagged its tail, Elysia couldn't help but mutter to herself about facing another type disadvantage. Under normal circumstances, she might have felt relieved to have the upper hand in terms of type, but Hop had already demonstrated his creativity and strategic prowess in overcoming such disadvantages. The gym leader's ability to adapt and strategize added an element of unpredictability to the battle, keeping Elysia on her toes. She knew that she couldn't underestimate the electric-type Pokémon before her.

This time, she decided to take the initiative with Sand Tomb. To her dismay, Hop's Yamper showcased impressive speed, easily dodging the attack and countering with a powerful Tackle. The physical blow sent Gible sprawling backward, landing on the ground. The little Dragon struggled to stand, its exhaustion evident, and beads of sweat forming on its body.

"Gible!" Elysia exclaimed, her concern palpable as she watched her partner endure the hit. Gible, not only battling against Yamper but also contending with its own nervousness in the midst of the crowd, displayed signs of weariness.

Adrian, observing the scene with a critical eye, remarked, "This is bad. Gible is not just fighting against Yamper but his own insecurities."

Owen, responding with a mix of sarcasm and displeasure, said, "Jeez! Thanks for your support, Adrian. So happy that Elysia considers you a good friend."

Unfazed by Owen's reaction, Adrian posed a direct question. "How many battles has Elysia had since she began her journey?"

Owen pondered the question, realizing that their encounters and battles had been spontaneous due to Elysia traveling alone. "She had her first battle with me, and then there was the situation at the Slumbering Weald. She went there to let Gible train without worrying about crowds, and after that...."

"That's it, then."

Perplexed, Owen sought clarification. "W-What do you mean?"

Adrian, maintaining his cold demeanor, delivered a blunt assessment. "Elysia did well training Gible's strength with wild Pokémon, but in doing so, she neglected her partner's real issues. I'm afraid to say this, but Elysia has slim chances of winning."

As Gible attempted to remain composed despite its shivering, the dozens of devices and people focusing on it intensified its anxiety. The attention weighed on him more than Yamper's attacks, and a silent growl escaped him—a mix of impotence and fear palpable in the air.

"Gible, we're not done yet! Come on, use Dragon Breath!" Elysia commanded with evident frustration. However, the pressure she inadvertently placed on her already affected partner only worsened Gible's state. He stood frozen, as if unable to hear his trainer's desperate pleas.

Hop and the spectators, whether in the gym or watching the match via streaming, observed Elysia and Gible's predicament. The tension was palpable, and the realization that only Elysia could overcome this situation hung in the air.

The young trainer, seeing Gible's lack of response and consumed by a mix of anger and frustration, shut her eyes and finally lashed out against her partner.

"Gible! What's going on!? We depend on you! Brush off whatever it’s taunting you or we’ll lose because of y...?"

Before she could finish her sentence, the weight of her words hit her. The instant remorse made her cover her mouth, realizing the gravity of her outburst. Gible, unable to endure the pressure any longer, retreated. In a swift motion, he jumped towards Elysia's Poké Ball and pressed the button, surrounding itself in the red light and finding comfort in its solitude. The sequence of events happened so quickly that, even after a few seconds passed, Elysia was still shocked and trying to come to terms with what had just unfolded.

Silence gripped the entire building. Confused murmurs filled the air as spectators exchanged perplexed glances, questioning what had just transpired. Some disheartened viewers ceased their recordings and left the venue, while others stood in bewilderment. Even Owen, unable to reconcile the unexpected turn of events in his friend's battle, was left at a loss. Adrian, his eyes shut tight, absorbed the outcome.

"Since the challenger's Pokémon retreated from battle, it is an automatic disqualification. Gym leader Hop is the winner!" the referee declared, but the customary cheer that followed a victory was noticeably absent.

Hop, despite being declared the winner, displayed no triumph. He calmly called back his Yamper, acknowledging its effort while still contemplating the unfortunate outcome of the battle.

Elysia, unable to face the reality of Gible's retreat, kept her gaze fixed on the Poké Ball in her hands. The shame and disappointment overwhelmed her, making it unbearable to look at Owen and Adrian, who had approached to offer comfort. With a heavy heart, Elysia sank to her knees, her fists clenched in frustration against the unforgiving ground.

“H-Hey, Elysia...!” Owen attempted to lift her spirits. “You did well, and I’m sure you will win next time, so...”

However, his choice of words proved less than ideal for the somber moment. Adrian, recognizing the inappropriateness of the situation, placed a hand on Owen's shoulder and shook his head, signaling that this was not the right time for such sentiments. The unspoken understanding between them emphasized the gravity of the situation and the need for sensitivity.

‘What a letdown! The daughter of Ash should've performed way better’

‘Is this really the best Kanto has to offer?’

‘Maybe she should stick to her mom's showcase events because battling clearly isn't her forte’

‘Galar's too tough for her, she should go back to the kiddie leagues’

‘What she said to Gible broke my heart. What a soulless person!’

‘She needs some serious training or maybe just stick to being a celebrity’s child’

‘Maybe she should attend some rookie battles first before embarrassing herself on the big stage’

‘TBF, once you catch a glimpse of what’s going on under Castelia City, every other battle looks so lame in comparison’

Back in Kanto, and not wanting to read any more of those unpleasant comments, Serena stopped the streaming. There was an atmosphere of contemplation and understanding among those who had also faced similar circumstances. Even Soren looked somewhat sad and upset, but his mother gently patted his head and smiled, comforting him.

"Well, she did good despite everything. And there will be another chance, right, love?" Serena said, addressing Ash.

However, her husband still saw the blank screen with an unusual expression of severity and contemplation. Intrigued, Serena asked, "Ash? Are you there?" but he still didn't respond.

As Ash contemplated his daughter's result through the black screen, Elysia remained wondering what she had done wrong. The sun set, casting long shadows over the gym stadium and creating an atmosphere of uncertainty about what she was going to do next. In that quiet moment, Ash couldn't help but reflect on his daughter’s behavior. The path of a Pokémon trainer was never easy, and this unusual and unfortunate setback may require something more than parenting counseling.
