Black Catcher

The day before the Festival of the Jubilee, the Team Rocket trio was on a cliff far from Marey Town, a wilderness where no one usually had a reason to visit. They were waiting for Delibird to deliver the needed items, curious about what would bring them. Jessie was standing on the cliff edge, looking at the sea.

"Hmm... Oh!" Jessie gasped as she saw the Delivery Pokémon fly to them from far away, its tail stuffed to the size of a gym ball.

When Delibird arrived on the hill, it opened its tail to take out the supplies from Zer0. It took out a dozen Pokéballs, then a metal stick that Team Rocket received last time from their boss.

"Mmm..." Meowth nodded as Delibird took out the items.

Then, the Delivery Pokémon took out a black belt with a battery-like device installed in it.

“Huh? What’s this for?.” Jessie picked up the belt to investigate it.

Lastly, Delibird took out a black Rotom Phone, which turned on and started hovering when it threw it into the sky.

"ROTOM?!" The Trio shouted at once in shock when they saw the phone.

"What? Who are you all?" The Rotom asked, who Team Rocket was a new face to.

"Oh, never mind..." James sighed in relief. They once had a Rotom Phone a few months ago while their twerp was traveling around the world, and that one tended to be unnecessarily lazy in doing its job. They thought this one was the same as the Rotom Phone they'd last received, and nearly had a heart attack from the thought of having a Rotom Phone that didn't even work properly.

What came out next from Delibird's tail was two square metal devices with black highlights, one having a cyan gem with a Penrose triangle drawn on it while the other had a gray gem with sunglasses drawn on it.

"Wait, isn't this the weird thing that the twerp used to trap us in a weird space?" Jessie asked, receiving the devices.

"Oh, that!" The Rotom Phone exclaimed, noticing the device. "That's a Zetta-Zone!”

“Zetta-Zone?”

“It's a phenomenon in the Terra Region that creates a space with special effects, and the effects depend on the name of the Zetta-Zone! What's special about it is that it lasts until you defeat your opponent, and affects all Pokémons in the field. Also…"

“When does that guy stop?” James whispered to Meowth, looking at the phone chatter.

“Zetta-Zone is inspired by Domain Expansion from Jujutsu Kaisen! Do you know it?”

“Okay, okay! You can stop now!” Jessie shouted in annoyance. Then, turning to her comrades, she asked: “Wait…So, what was our plan again?”

“Ring ring ring…” The Rotom Phone suddenly started to make a sound resembling a phone call, as if it temporarily lost control of its body. Then, it tilted its head back and forth to turn its screen to a purple “VOICE ONLY” text.

“Zer0 here. Did you get the supplies you need?”

“Yeah.”The trio nodded.

“Good. But before we begin, there’s something I recommend you do.”

“What is it?” James added.

“To catch… This Pokémon.” The phone then showed a picture of Shedinja.

“Shedinja?” Meowth asked, recognizing the Pokémon. “Why that Pokémon?”

“It’s not directly related to our plan, but Shedinja is the best Pokémon for your team to catch.”

“And… Why?”

“According to my analysis, the Pikachu you want to catch has two Electric-type attacks, one Steel-type attack and one Normal-type attack. Shedinja’s ability, Wonder Guard, makes it immune to all of them.”

“Wait, for real?” Jessie gasped, dashing right to the front of the phone.

“Of course, and there’s a high chance there’s a Shedinja on the back hill of the Marey Town.”

“Really?”

“Didn’t a Ninjask fight Salamence on your last mission?”

“Yeah.”

“If there’s a Ninjask, there would be also a Shedinja separated from it. And even if it’s not Shedinja, it would be a good choice to capture a Pokémon before starting our plan.”

“To protect Shedinja from devastation!”

“To unite all Pokémons within our nation!”

“Jessie!”

“James!”

“Team Rocket blasts to the hill at the speed of light!” Jessie declared, pointing to the back hill.

“Surrender now, or prepare to get captured!”

“Meowth, that’s right!”

----------------------------------------

Aboard their air balloon, the Team Rocket floated above the back hill and observed the wild with their binoculars.

“Hmm… I wonder where Shedinja is…” Jessie said. James and Meowth were also focusing on finding the Shed Pokémon, which they had no idea where it tended to be.

Then all of a sudden, Meowth let go of its binoculars and powerlessly hung its body on the wicker basket edge.

“Wait, what the?!” James and Jessie caught Meowth in time, dragging it back into the basket. When they looked at Meowth’s face, its pupils disappeared and its mouth was helplessly open, as if there was no soul inside to control its body. “What’s… going on?”

Jessie and James immediately landed the balloon on the hill to lay Meowth on the grass.

“What happened to him?” Jessie asked.

“I dunno, he was just looking down at the hill and he suddenly passed out,” James replied.

“Wh- Where am I?!” A voice, highly resembling Meowth’s except it sounded like the speaker was wearing a metal bucket on their head, came out from the woods.

“Huh?” Jessie and James stood up and slowly walked toward where the sound was coming from, slightly aware of the weird voice. The next moment, Shedinja flew out from the woods.

“It’s Shedinja!” James exclaimed, taking out a Pokéball. “Watch this-!”

“Wait, wait wait! It’s me, Meowth!” Shedinja said, sweating profusely despite looking like a hollow shell from the outside.

“Huh?”

“Wait… Why is my body over there?” Shedinja approached Meowth while Jessie and James were looking at it, and just as it flew past them and revealed its hole on its back, the two humans lost consciousness and collapsed.

“What?!” Shedinja looked behind after hearing the thud, noticing its comrades unconscious.

“What’s going on? I can’t move my arms!” A voice resembling Jessie came out from the Shed Pokémon.

“Why are you speaking inside me, Jessie?!” James’ voice came out this time.

“We’re all trapped in the same body?!” Shedinja said in Meowth’s voice.

The three souls shook Shedinja’s body in panic, trying to get out of it and return to their original bodies. After the trio swung the Shed Pokémon’s body backward, their souls came launching out and returned to their bodies, ending the small chaos.

“What are you doing? Capture that guy before it shows us its back!” Jessie shouted.

“Got it! Watch this!” James threw his Pokéball to Shedinja, which opened as it hit the Pokémon and drained it inside. The ball closed and shook three times, making a clicking sound right after.

“Shedinja has been added to the Pokédex!” Team Rocket’s Rotom Phone said.

“Phew…” James sighed in relief, putting his hand on his chest. “Alright, step one done… Rotom Phone, call Zer0!”

“Contacting Zer0…” The next second, a purple “VOICE ONLY” text appeared on the phone’s display.

Unauthorized duplication: this narrative has been taken without consent. Report sightings.

“Zer0 here. Did you catch Shedinja?”

“Yeah, we did.”

“Well, you did an excellent job with that. Now, we shall wait until it’s nighttime.”

“Okay.”

“I wish you luck. I’ll be contacting you this night.” Zer0 said, ending the call.

“Wait, so… What was our plan again?” James asked.

“Right, the part Oskarlee decided to skip because he was too lazy…” Meowth said. “Let me explain it again.”

----------------------------------------

“Now, listen closely… First, you’ll separate your team into two.”

“And?”

“The day before the festival, the city hall will be busy preparing. You’ll disguise as the league staff and get assigned to the task of changing the egg on the fountain of the jubilee to a Togekiss statue. It’s located in the center of the town square.”

“Oh, I think I’ve seen it! The fountain with Togepi egg on it?”

“Correct. The Zettaphage you've received is special, being able to perfectly transform into the Togekiss statue used on the fountain."

“So this bacteriophage thingy is called Zettaphage?” James asked, holding out the metal stick.

“Yes. While one team places it, the other will take a Togepi’s egg from the back hill.”

“The egg? Are we going to, like raid Togekiss’s nest or something?” Meowth asked.

“Not really. Let me explain. There’s a small league that is commenced on every Festival of the Jubilee named ‘Jubilee Cup’, and it always has a real Togepi egg as the first prize.”

“Mmm, so are we going to win the league then?”

“Not that either. The night before the festival begins, the league staff will go to the back hill with various goods to exchange for the egg. You will secretly disguise as staff members and do the task by yourself. But don’t forget: We are not giving Togekiss the goods.”

“What? Why?” James asked. “Won’t that anger Togekiss?”

“That’s what we want. Togekiss will go with all its might to return the egg, and your task is to defeat it and deceive the staff that they obtained the egg the usual way.”

“Well… But why not peacefully get the egg?”

“It’s called ‘Feint Operation’. By causing unnecessary chaos, we’ll make it harder for people to figure out our true purpose.”

“Mmm…”

“I’ll be giving you two Zetta-Zones and one of my inventions.”

“What are those?” Jessie asked.

“I’ll be explaining it when the time comes, but just know that they’re items that will aid you in battles. Anyway, with it, you’ll participate in the Jubilee Cup.”

“The Jubilee Cup?”

“That’s also a feint operation. You will act like you desperately need to win the league, but it won’t matter whether you win or lose in practice.”

“Yeah, because that’s not what we are trying to do.” Meowth nodded.

“Correct. Because we need to seep out the energy from the land secretly, the Zettaphage will take an entire week to be fully charged. And by then, the festival will be over. On the last night of the festival, you’ll secretly assemble at the fountain of the jubilee to give me the Zettaphage. It would be easier than it sounds, because of how lenient the security is. Now, does it look practical enough?”

----------------------------------------

The night right before the festival, a few league staff wearing white uniforms with black stripes and trousers gathered up in front of the city hall of Marey Town. Jessie and James sneaked into the group, and no one in the place seemed to realize their true identity.

"Alright, everyone..." The mayor started, clapping his hands. "It's going to be quite a chore, but let's give our best for the upcoming festival. "

"Zer0 was right... They aren't noticing us." James whispered to Jessie.

“Wait, we haven’t decided our tasks yet.” Jessie gasped.

“Oh, right. I ain’t doing the Togekiss one, though.”

“Me neither.”

“How about we go rock paper scissors?” James said, holding out his fist.

“Challenge accepted.”

Jessie and James posed menacingly to each other as if they were about to start a life-risking battle.

“Rock, paper… SCISSORS!” Jessie threw out scissors, while James threw out a rock.

“Oh,” Jessie said.

“Yes! Let’s go!” James spun his arm in joy, snapping his fingers right after.

Some minutes later, Jessie was holding a large white sack with red and blue shapes drawn on it, and James was holding a stone Togekiss statue on a round stand with a long metal stick under it.

“Here, take this.” James gave her Shedinja’s Pokéball so that it would help her in her secret task. “Good luck!”

Jessie let out a long sigh and turned to the back hill. James turned away from her and headed to the fountain.

Later when James arrived in the marketplace, countless staff were placing booth tents and gadgets here and there for the festival. He looked at the Togekiss statue he should pretend he was putting it, and the metal stick that he was supposed actually to place. He figured out this task wasn’t any easy compared to the one Jessie must be doing right now.

Just then, when James looked at the sky, his hot air balloon floated above the marketplace, slowly moving out to the beach. He secretly followed the balloon to a place far away from the town, where no one could know they were there.

When they were far enough, Meowth poked its head out of the balloon and shook its hand. James threw the Togekiss statue at the balloon, which Meowth safely caught. “You’re welcome. See you on the back hill soon!”

James then pressed the button on one side of the metal stick, and the device quickly transformed into the statue of Togekiss he had been holding just a few seconds ago.

“Hope we don’t fail this time…” James said. He quietly returned to the marketplace without anyone noticing and replaced the egg statue on the fountain of the jubilee with the fake Togekiss statue.

‘My job is done… Don’t disappoint, Jessie!’ James smiled as he looked at the back hill, believing in his comrade.

----------------------------------------

Meanwhile, Jessie was on the hill with the heavy sack on her back. She was looking for a Togepi egg lying around somewhere on the hill, and Zer0 was following her to give her advice for completing such a hard mission. Meowth, riding its hot air balloon, was above the hill too.

“Wait, before you begin, be sure to activate Zetta-Zen.” Zer0 directed.

“What’s that?”

“The square device with the gray gem. Simply toss it to the top of the hill, and it will activate.”

“Okay then. Zetta-Zen , activate!” Jessie shouted, throwing the device with a gray gem to the sky. The device enveloped and released a transparent rainbow barrier resembling a bubble, covering the entire hill and becoming completely invisible.

“Good. Now, no one outside will be able to see what’s happening here. Feel free to hide your sack now.”

“You can give it to me!” Meowth shouted out. “Wait, was I too loud…?”

“Not really. They wouldn’t even realize we’re here.”

“Alright, Meowth! Catch this!” Jessie threw her sack to the balloon, and Meowth conveniently caught it and put it in the wicker basket. Soon enough, she managed to find a Togepi egg deep on the hill, picked it up, and started walking down the hiking path.

“Uh, why is it strangely quiet…?” Jessie wondered.

“Draw your Pokémons out immediately,” Zer0 commanded.

“Huh? O… okay then!” Jessie called out Shedinja and Wobbuffet, still wondering why there wasn’t anything approaching her.

“Coming in three…”

“?”

“Two…”

“Wait, where-” Jessie noticed a white figure flying out from behind the hill.

“One."

The white figure turned around and spread out its wings, spinning horizontally to create a massive light-blue blade of energy that flew directly at Jessie. Jessie got down, just barely dodging the blade which cut through dozens of trees behind her.

"What the..." Jessie whispered, looking at the Pokémon above her, glaring down at her with its face full of rage.

"It's here. The Jubilee Pokémon." The Rotom Phone scanned the Pokémon and showed a picture of it on the screen, except it had a joyful expression.

"Togekiss: Jubilee Pokémon. Fairy/Flying Type. A Pokémon that will bless people who avoid needless strives and respect each other."

The next moment, Togekiss teleported to Team Rocket's air balloon.

"What the?!!" Meowth gasped, jumpscared by the large white Pokémon. Togekiss slammed the wicker basket with its wings, cutting the parachute cord and making Meowth fall.

"Meowth!" Jessie sprinted and caught Meowth in her arms, but the Jubilee Pokémon launched another blade of light-blue energy at them.

“Wobbuffet!” Wobbuffet jumped out this time and tanked the blow. “Wo… bbu… FFET!” Wobbuffet reflected the attack to Togekiss, with the blade glowing in prismatic colors.

However, Togekiss glowed its body in rainbow colors and transformed into Shedinja, which took a direct hit from the attack and powerlessly fell to the ground.

“WHAT?!” Jessie and Meowth shouted at once, confused about the situation. From where Shedinja was before, Togekiss soared up to the sky as if it was trying to escape.

“Where is it going…?” “Wobbuffet…?”

Some seconds later, Wobbuffet’s body glowed and suddenly transformed into Togekiss.

“Huh? Does that mean?!” Just as Jessie and Meowth realized what Togekiss did, the Jubilee Pokémon soared up to the sky again. Wobbuffet was free-falling from hundreds of meters above, and Togekiss was about to push it from above so that it would hit the ground even harder.

“Wob… buffet??” Togekiss ruthlessly teleported above the Patient Pokémon, pushing it down toward the ground. The impact estimated was so strong, that Wobbuffet wouldn’t have been able to reflect the impact.

But right before Wobbuffet hit the ground, a blue dragon Pokémon came to rescue by ramming into Togekiss, making it let go of Wobbuffet. It then caught Wobbuffet with its back, safely taking it back to the front of its trainer.

“Salamence!” Jessie and Meowth exclaimed while Wobbuffet jumped off Salamence’s back.

“Salamence to the rescue! Now, leave it up to me.” Zer0 said.

“Wait, Salamence is your Pokémon?”

“Indeed. Salamence, use Tailwind and Sunny Day !” Salamence flapped its wings to summon a wind blowing from behind it, boosting its speed. It then roared at the sky, summoning the sun and making it daytime in seconds.

Togekiss sweated profusely, not only from the heat but also from the opponent with immense force in front of it. Togekiss started flying around the hill, and Salamence chased it right after.

“Use Flamethrower !” The Dragon Pokémon breathed out a massive spray of fire, and Togekiss swapped its place with Salamence to evade the attack. Then, the Jubilee Pokémon flew in the opposite direction to get a chance to land a hit on Salamence.

“Ally Switch, huh? You can’t use that forever! Keep using Flamethrower !”

Salamence breathed fire non-stop while flying at a swift speed. Togekiss thought the flames would’ve covered its sight and threw out a light-blue blade to its opponent, but Salamence stopped breathing fire and dodged the attack.

“Toge?!” The Dragon Pokémon overtook Togekiss and pushed it down from above, making it crash to the ground.

“To, Togess…” Salamence then breathed out fire again, burning the Jubilee Pokémon directly. “TOGESS-!!”

“Tha… That’s a little too brutal…” Jessie reacted.

“I apologize, but it had to be done. Now, let’s get the Togepi egg and return.”

“But… It might…”

“Welp, are you worried about Togekiss? Then, I’ll change the plan for you a little…” Zer0 suggested.

----------------------------------------

“Emergency! Emergency!” Team Rocket disguised as a paramedic while Togekiss was laid on a large emergency bed, its body covered with burns and unconscious. There was also Shedinja next to it, lying on a smaller bed. “We’ve got urgent patients!” They shouted, entering the Pokémon Center in the town.

“Wha- What’s going on?!” Nurse Joy gasped, noticing Togekiss. “What happened to it?”

“We just found it lying on the hill unconscious! Who would do such a cruel thing to it?”

“A- Anyway, thank you for rescuing it!” Nurse Joy said, taking the two Pokémons into the patient rooms.

Some minutes later, Team Rocket got out of the center and looked at the night sky.

“Everything’s done now. The egg is acquired, Togekiss is defeated, and the Zettaphage is placed. Now, all you’ll have to do is wait.” Zer0 said, but Team Rocket remained silent. “You guys still can’t believe you’ve actually done it?”

“Kind of? I mean, those twerps should have appeared back when we were fighting Togekiss if it had been our usual mission…” Meowth confessed.

“I can assure you, you won’t have trouble with them for a while.” Zer0 relieved.

“Wait, really?”

“Well, but still… There’s the Monarch among them, right?”

“Yeah.”

“It would be quite hard then, but we can make it. Now, go have some rest. Enjoy your time in the town for now, but obviously, be sure to hide your identity at all times. That’s what you’re best capable of, right?”

“Yeah, Team Rocket is not blasting off at the speed of light now!” Jessie shouted.

“Those twerps gotta surrender, or prepare to fight!”

“Meowth, that’s right! Not losing this time!”

“Wobbuffet!”
