Chapter 1 - A Glimpse of the Glow

Chapter 1 - A Glimpse of the Glow

In the quaint and peaceful town of Pallet, a scene of youthful excitement unfolds just beyond the outskirts.

"Fooey! It bounced off again!" one of the children exclaims, frustration and determination mingling in their voice.

"Let me have a go! It's my turn!" Another child steps forward eagerly, clutching their own PokéBall tightly.

A short distance from the town, a small group of children has gathered in a tight circle around a wild Nidorino, its vibrant, purplish hide glistening in the afternoon sun. The creature stands its ground, wary yet unyielding, its sharp horn gleaming dangerously.

"Do you really think you've got a chance?" A boy with tousled hair and a mischievous grin taunts, holding his basket and net ready. His laughter rings out, light-hearted but challenging.

"Oh, be quiet!" retorts a little girl with a fiery spirit. Her eyes flash with determination as she pulls out her PokéBall, the familiar red and white sphere glinting in her hand. "I'm gonna catch this Pokémon... and make it my personal pet!" She declares with a broad grin, her confidence unshaken.

With a swift, practiced motion, she throws the PokéBall towards the Nidorino. The Pokémon, however, is not easily subdued. It reacts instantly, its muscular neck flexing as it deflects the PokéBall effortlessly with a quick flick of its horn. The ball bounces harmlessly away, rolling to a stop at the girl's feet.

"It... it bounced off...?" The girl's voice falters, her initial confidence giving way to disappointment. She stares at the PokéBall, her expression a mix of disbelief and frustration.

From the distance, a young girl quietly observed the scene. She leaned back against the rugged bark of an ancient oak tree, the branches above her swaying gently in the breeze. The air was filled with the soft rustling of leaves, some of which drifted down like delicate, green confetti.

Her striking red eyes were fixed on the little girl’s troubled expression as she struggled with her PokéBall. Beside the young observer, a boy of similar age stood, his face lit up with amusement as he watched the unfolding drama.

"Look at them, L," he remarked with a smirk, his voice carrying a tone of playful mockery. He lounged against the tree with both arms casually behind his head, exuding a lazy, carefree attitude. "Having trouble catching a Pokémon, huh?" he chuckled, his grin widening.

The girl, L, remained silent, her expression calm and composed. She shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly before turning her gaze away from the scene. Her indifference seemed to slightly deflate the boy's playful mood. He let out a small sigh, pouting exaggeratedly. "You're no fun to be around with..." he muttered, though there was no real frustration in his voice. Despite his words, he cherished her quiet companionship, finding a unique comfort in her presence.

As they continued to stand there, watching the scene unfold, a sudden idea illuminated the young boy's mind. His grin widened with excitement as he turned to the girl beside him, L. "I'll go help them out. Wanna come with?" he asked, his eyes sparkling with anticipation. L remained silent for a moment, her expression unreadable. Then, with a slight nod, she pushed herself off the tree and joined him.

The pair began to make their way toward the group of children, who were still struggling to catch the elusive Nidorino. The Pokémon deflected every PokéBall thrown at it with impressive ease, its horn batting away each attempt with practiced precision.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

"You can't catch a Pokémon like that!" The young boy's energetic voice rang out, capturing the attention of the frustrated children. He arrived at their side, grinning widely and winking playfully. "If you want to catch a Pokémon…"

He paused dramatically, pulling out his own PokéBall. The children watched him with wide-eyed curiosity. "...First, you've gotta weaken it. Then throw the PokéBall." He clicked his tongue and smirked, the confidence in his posture unmistakable.

The children listened intently, their frustration starting to fade as they absorbed his advice.

"For instance… Try this!" The young boy quickly pressed the button on his PokéBall and, with a determined throw, sent it hurtling towards the Nidorino. In a flash of light, a Poliwhirl emerged, its spiral belly shimmering. The Pokémon stood resolutely in front of the Nidorino, ready for battle.

"Give it the Water Gun!" the boy commanded, his voice brimming with confidence. Poliwhirl raised one of its blue, webbed hands and, with a swift motion, unleashed a powerful jet of water from its palm. The stream of water hit the Nidorino squarely, sending it reeling.

The Nidorino staggered, shaking its head furiously as it tried to recover from the dazing attack. The children gasped in awe. "Wow!" one exclaimed. "It looks so dizzy!" another added, marveling at the sight.

The young boy smirked, nodding at their reactions. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a spare PokéBall, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "Yeah!" he affirmed, his smirk growing wider.

With a practiced flick of his wrist, he threw the PokéBall towards the bewildered Nidorino. "And now that Nidorino's weak, I throw the PokéBall and…" The ball struck the Nidorino on the head, opening to absorb the Pokémon in a flash of light. The PokéBall fell to the ground and wobbled three times before emitting a satisfying beep.

"Haha! Gotcha, Nidorino!" the boy laughed triumphantly as he strode over to pick up the PokéBall, his heart pounding with exhilaration.

"Cool!" The children gathered around, their eyes wide with admiration. "That was great, Red!" one of the kids praised, their faces glowing with excitement. Red basked in the attention and praise, his chest swelling with pride at his successful capture.

The young girl, L, stood at a distance, her piercing red eyes locked onto Red as he basked in his victory. She crossed her arms over her chest, her expression calm but contemplative. Her mind, however, was a whirlwind of thoughts, each tumbling over the other in rapid succession.

‘Everyone in Pallet Town knows him, and why not?’ she mused, her thoughts swirling around Red’s undeniable popularity. Slowly, she turned away from the group, her footsteps soft and deliberate as she made her way back to the shelter of the towering oak tree. She leaned against its gnarled bark, feeling its rough texture against her back, and slid down until she was seated comfortably on the cool ground.

Her gaze never wavered from Red, watching as he interacted with the children, his energy and enthusiasm infectious. ‘He’s the best Pokémon Trainer around,’ she thought with a mix of admiration and quiet resignation. Tilting her head back, she looked up at the canopy above, the leaves whispering secrets to each other as they swayed in the gentle breeze. She closed her eyes, allowing the symphony of nature to wash over her.

‘... What are Pokémon, you ask?’ Her mind drifted, carried away by the melody of rustling leaves and the soft murmurs of the wind.

‘Strange creatures that live in the forests and lakes. I don't know how many kinds of Pokémon are out there in the world…’

Her eyes slowly fluttered open, the setting sun casting a warm, golden glow that reflected in her crimson irises. She watched as the last rays of daylight danced through the gaps in the leaves, creating a mosaic of light and shadow.

"... But I know he's going to catch them all," she whispered to herself, her voice barely audible over the rustling leaves.

As the sun continued its descent, the interplay of light and shadow seemed to mirror the complexities of her own thoughts and emotions. The setting sun’s final rays slipped through the canopy, creating a contrast between the light outside and the shadows that cloaked her, reflecting the turmoil within.
