Rin jolted awake, his eyes barely open as he let out a loud yawn. “Rin?! You’re going to be late! Did you forget that today is your big day, or are you just no longer interested?” His mother’s voice echoed through the house, a mix of concern and frustration.
Silence hung in the air. “Huh, no answer? I’m just going to tell Professor Kosai then—”
Before she could finish, Rin's mother swung open the front door.
“Nooooo! Mom!” Rin exclaimed, rubbing the sleep from his eyes.
“I’m just waking up! Geez, I’ll be down there in a minute—no, wait! I’m late! Make it thirty seconds!” He scrambled out of bed, adrenaline kicking in.
“Hurry up, Rin! You were supposed to leave at least ten minutes ago! I’ll be surprised if you get any Pokémon, considering how many kids are starting their adventures today. On that note, come eat—”
“No, Mom! I can’t! I gotta go! I’ll be back soon!” Rin dashed past her, fueled by a rush of excitement and nerves.
“How the hell did he get ready that fast? Must be the adrenaline,” she muttered to herself as she waved goodbye.
“Good morning, Rin!” called out multiple neighbours and pedestrians as he sprinted past them like a well-trained athlete.
“It wouldn’t be bad if he decided to be an athlete instead of a Pokémon trainer,” one neighbour remarked defeatistly.
“Well, at least they pay well when you become a well-known trainer, so it’s not all for nothing, old sport. Now come fix my window that your meddling friends broke before leaving!” another neighbour shouted after him.
“Huff... huff... almost there…” Rin gasped as he pushed himself harder.

“There you are, Rin!” Tenzo, his childhood friend, shouted as he caught up with him.
“Stop acting like we didn’t just get here! Now come on, you two! We might still get a decent Pokémon!” Miyuki chimed in, another close friend.
“Well, any Pokémon is good as long as I’m using it,” Rin said with determination.
“Is that so? I hope you get a Shedinja!” Miyuki teased.
“Well, that ain’t so bad,” Rin replied with a grin. “Where’s Tenzo, by the way?”
“You guys are slow! Since I didn’t get the best Pokémon of the bunch, I’m just going to grab the best one between us. Hehe!” Tenzo smirked confidently.
“You cheating son of a b—”
“Hey! Settle down now! Aren’t you guys coming inside?” Professor Kosai called out from the doorway of his lab.
“Yes, Professor!” the three friends replied in unison.
“Now, as you three already know, you came late… late late,” Professor Kosai continued with a chuckle. “But no worries! The Pokémon might be a bit harder to train, but the results will be stunning. Okay, they’re fresh from the Region of Balance and Agoros. So with that said—pick your poison!”
