The car raced across the dirt road. As the car approached a bump, Jet's mom stepped on the gas. The Jeep hit the bump at speeds it wasn't meant to, sending the car into the air and back down with a THUD!
"Ma', you're gonna make me car sick!" Jet cried as he was sent flying upwards in his seat.
Jet heard a yelp from his right. His mother had taken the doors off of the Jeep, so it was easy to peer out over the side and see the black and white Pokémon running next to the car. Traveling up its neck was a white mane that billowed in the wind, which culminated at the front in a long extension that resembled a lightning bolt.
"Look! Blitzle!" Jet exclaimed.
The Pokémon ran right up to the side of the open door, racing the vehicle down the road. First one, then two, and wait-- three made a whole herd of them! They were so close, Jet could almost reach out and touch them.
An older Pokémon cut in between Jet's outstretched hand and the herd of Blitzle. It looked similar to the Blitzle but bigger and the strips were more jagged and numerous. The Zebstrika cut the herd off and led them away from the road.
"Ma'! I want a Blitzle for my starter!"
"Do you have Blitzle money?"
That doesn't make any fucking sense, Jet thought as he sat back annoyed. She always said that.

Today, Jet was 12. And in Arjana that was the age when most kids got their first Pokémon. Being a trainer was all he'd ever wanted. In his heart, he knew he would be a champion of the Arjana Region. Jet couldn't wait! It was all he ever dreamed--
"Psyduck-Two. Psyduck-Two. This is Psyduck-One."
The two-way radio cut in on Jet's thought process. He instantly recognized Professor Baobab's voice and the call-sign coming from the two-way radio.
Jet's mom picked the mic up to reply. "Psyduck-One. This is Psyduck-Two. Go ahead."
"What's your ETA?" she asked.
"We're about ten minutes from the ranch."
"Hurry back with those potions!"
"Copy," she replied.
Jet didn't understand what was happening but he knew the tone of his mother's voice was serious. She jerked the wheel of the car and shifted gears. The car spun. Jet did the only thing he could. He grabbed on to the only available handle and prayed. The car slid into the parking spot and came to a stop. It had taken less than ten minutes to get home to the ranch.
Jet's mom hopped out of the car and Jet followed suit. She grabbed her belt out of the Jeep. On the belt were 3 pokéballs. She strapped it around her waist.
Jet jumped out the Jeep, but his foot caught and he tumbled forward to smash into the dirt. His mom caught him before he hit the ground and reset him to his feet. Her movements were so fluid they seemed choreographed.
Jet's mom was brown skinned like Jet, but she was darker than both he and his dad. Her hair was wrapped in a traditional Arjana dhuku but she was dressed in hospital scrubs. She had a strong face and her nose was pierced with a nose ring.
The story has been taken without consent; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
"I got the potions!" Mom yelled.
"Hurry up!" Professor Baobab begged as she waved them both in. Mom's Wigglytuff was at the Professor's side mimicking Baobab's movements.
"What's going on?" Jet asked, slightly worried. He followed his mom into the house tripping on the steps, but he just barely managed to catch his balance before he hit the wooden deck.
The house smelled of antiseptic and bandages were everywhere. His parents had converted the back room of the ranch into a "Pokémon Center" of sorts. While not as well-equipped as the Pokémon Centers in town, Jet heard no complaints from the injured Pokémon that stayed there.
"Jet, go sit in the living room and watch TV. We'll be out in a second," Mom told him.
"Is a Pokémon hurt? I can help!" He begged her.
"Go now, Jet."
Mom ran into the room with a bag of potions they had gone to town to get. She shut the door behind Professor Baobab and Jet heard the lock click.
He sulked into the living room which looked more like a waiting room of a hospital. Empty chairs were all around and the only TV was the one in the corner that hung on the wall. The one and only couch was an old dirty brown one that Jet was sure was older than Professor Baobab.
There were other injured Pokémon around too. There was a Slowbro, some Bidoof, and 2 or 3 bunches of Exeggcute. No wonder his mom needed so many potions.
Instead of waiting Jet set about helping the other Pokemon. He bandaged Slowbro's arm (although the Pokemon wouldn't notice for another 5 minutes or so.) Then he made sure all of them had something to eat. He began trimming the fur coat of the Bidoof.
"I can help," Jet growled to himself as he sat down on the couch and listened to the news that was blaring from the TV.
"Pokémon Poaching in Arjana has risen 10% in the last year--"
Psst! Jet Changed the channel.
"In local news, the wild Bouffalant known as 'Scarface' has led a stampede. A $6000 Bounty has been--"
Psst!
"Team Obsidian's political ideology--"
Psst!
The next channel was Battlenet. Arjana's region champion was battling some random guy from Kanto. It was a doubles match. Jet watched a couple more battles. After an hour he got bored. After two, he was slumped over in his chair, and after three he'd begun to lose hope.
He glanced around the room. There was a vent above the couch on the side of the room. That vent led into the other side of the wall. Jet grabbed a chair, but he still wasn't close enough. After stacking three chairs on top of each other, he made the climb.
His tower rocked as he placed his first foot onto it. He steadied his creation once again and began his climb up the tilting tower. First chair. Second chair. Third chair. The third chair rocked but Jet managed to get both feet on it.
Jet reached upwards for the vent. He was an inch away when his weight shifted in the chair. The top chair pivoted and his tower began to crumble. Jet felt the entire world slip from under him. His butt slammed HARD into the floor.
"Ouch," he mumbled.
"If you're done climbing," a voice with an accent came from behind him, "We have something to show you," Professor Baobab said with a smile.
Jet sat up and got off his ass as if nothing happened. He jogged in place and then dashed forward into the room, rushing past Professor Baobab.
His mom stood there on the other side of the room throwing a bloody apron in the medical waste bin. Jet barely caught sight of it. "Jet, we want you to meet someone," she said.
"My Pokémon partner?" he asked hopefully.
"Maybe," said Professor Baobab from behind him. "It's tentative."
Jet saw movement from beneath the covers on the operating table. Was his Pokémon hurt? He approached the covers nervously. Was it a Rowlett? A Chimchar?
He couldn't tell what was beneath the mess of sheets. Finally, he pulled the covers back. First, a little brown head poked out, followed by two ears coming from beneath the blanket.
"An Eevee!" Jet cried happily as he quickly pulled the blanket the rest of the way.
The Eevee stood, or at least it tried to stand. The poor thing was missing its whole front right leg.
Jet took a step back from the Pokémon. His heart beat hard in his chest. He looked back at the Eevee again to make sure he was actually seeing what he was seeing. Yep. The Eevee was missing a leg.
"What's..." Jet looked for the right words but couldn't find one so he just decided to blurt it out. "What's wrong with it?!"
The Eevee drew back it's head as if it was offended.
"Jet!" Mom said disapprovingly. She moved across the room and stood next to the Pokémon placing a gentle hand on its back. "Nothing is wrong with it."
"It's missing a leg," Jet said bluntly.
The Eevee barked angrily and squirmed its way back under the covers.
"It was caught up in a stampede." Mom said. "The Bouffalant, Scarface, and his herd trampled him. We tried to save the leg but it didn't work out that way."
"We thought he'd make a good partner for you. But..." Professor Baobab started again. "I am not perfect. I have been wrong before. Spend one month with this Eevee. If it does not work out, return him to my lab and I will let you choose your partner properly," she offered.
Jet felt heat rise up in his chest. "Well guess what Eevee! We have a whole month together!" Jet picked up Eevee by his waist.
"Eevee,"
Eevee turned his head and let out a long yellow stream of piss. Jet watched (almost in slow motion) as the liquid splash against his chest. Jet screamed and tossed Eevee his mom catching the Pokemon in mid air before it hit the floor.
"One month," Professor Baobab reminded him but she sounded less sure.
