Hoenn was a peaceful place, minus the eco-terrorists and the sleeping primordial monsters that could destroy the world if they woke up on the wrong side of the bed, and they always do. Other than that, the sun shined brightly, the water was cool, and most of the pokemon were peaceful. All except a particularly angry young Seedot.
"Go Seedot! Use Absorb, then move in and hit it with Astonish!" The young trainer called out, the Pokemon doing as it was told. It didn't move very quickly, yet its opponent, a simple Taillow, was too stunned by the pain of the Absorb to move out of the way. After being hit twice, the opposing trainer remembered where they were, and called out a move of their own.
"P-peck!" The small red, white, and dark blue bird followed the orders quickly and without hesitation, its beak shining brightly with flying-type energy. It struck the acorn pokemon on its head, the Astonish failing to make the bird flinch. It clearly did a lot of damage, the grass type being weak to flying. Yet the Seedot did not give up.
"Hit it with another Tackle, then Absorb again!" The bird failed to move out of the way, the pair were much too close for proper combat. While the Tackle may have suffered due to the closeness, the Absorb did not care. With that, the Taillow was down, its eyes turning into swirls and falling over. The fainted state didn't last long, but the Pokemon was completely vulnerable. Either allowing for the enemy to claim victory and leave or finish it permanently. But this was just a friendly battle between trainers, so with a bright red light, the bird Pokemon was gone.
"Wow, I never expected to see such an aggressive Seedot." A young boy, around fourteen, said a slight tinge of worry in his voice. "That Tackle was more like a Headbutt if I'm, to be honest."
"Seedot and I have been practising. Most pokemon around here tend to be rather passive since there is so much food to go around." Arthur said, a gin on his lips. He stood at a solid six foot even, short cropped brown hair that hid under a standard poke-mart baseball cap. His green eyes held a gleam of pride as he took the prize money for winning. It was only fifty Pokedollars, the pair were betting their month's allowance. Arthur only got twenty-five Pokedollars a month, so it was a massive profit for him.

Arthur was two years older than the other boy, at age sixteen. His parents had been from Unova, moving to Pettleburg shortly before his birth, and they carried over some of their beliefs with them. Such as children not getting their personal pokemon until sixteen, where fourteen was the common age in Hoenn. The pair had known each other for a long time but rarely interacted outside of classes. The other boy, Mitchel, mostly preferred to keep to himself. This impromptu battle between new trainers being the exception.
With the newly acquired funds, Arthur now had a total of five hundred Pokedollars. He had beaten a few other of his classmates and had also been saving up his allowance. He planned to buy another Pokeball or two and catch an ally, though his parents told him that he would be required to feed and care for it if that was the case. Seedot barely ate, instead getting its food from the sun. It only required food in small amounts to get minerals, and when the sun was covered for longer than a day.
"Are you going to take on the gym challenge, Authur?" Mitchel asked, the boy pushing up his glasses as he spoke. Arthur merely scoffed, before figuring that would be rather rude to not answer properly.
"Of course, I'm going to head up to Rustbro and challenge Roxanne, catch an Abra, then come back down and beat Norman. It'll be a cakewalk. Seedot will make short work of those rocks, and with how powerful a Psychic pokemon is, Abra will make short work of Norman's weak Normal type Pokemon." The young trainer waved his hand as if dismissing the power of the Gym leaders as nothing more than a pebble in his path. It was truly the arrogance of youth.
"I've been searching the forums," Mitchel said, beginning to run ahead as the city of Pettleburg came into view. "and there are a lot of strong trainers this year. They reckon it's going to be one of the biggest and most challenging conferences yet! I saw one guy was even bringing in his father's Tyranitar from the Jhoto Kanto war! I'm sorry Authur, but you don't stand a chance!"
"Just you wait and see Mitchel, I'm going to be the best! Seedot and I are unstoppable! I'll have a team of powerhouses that can chuck that stupid Tyranitar into the ocean so it can swim back to Jhoto to hide in a cave! And when I beat everyone at the conference, I'm gonna take on the Elite Four, then I'll beat Steven himself!"
Mitchel meanwhile just laughed at Arthur's declaration before running ahead and waving goodbye to the young trainer. Arthur meanwhile held the almost brand-new, shiny red and white Pokeball that held Seedot within, promising the young Mon that he would succeed.
