The day the world ended started out just like any day out there. Miserable, mundane, mediorce, honestly just meh. There was nothing special on that day, no strange phenomenons, no divine messages, no dark omens. It was a day like any other. That holds especially true for our protagonist John.
John was the pinnacle of boring. Average height, average weight, black hair, black eyes. Nothing too bad, nothing too good, perfectly average in everyway. He would be oatmeal if it was a person. Honestly, the only thing outstanding about him is how average he is. I'd love to tell you more about John, but there's nothing really too noteworthy to tell about John. But no matter, we all know know how it's gonna turn out for him anyway, so let's set that aside for now.
Anyway, as I've said, John was having an ordinary day. He's an employee at some company, and John was hard at work. Not gonna bore you with the details of that work, I know you're not here for that. Even among the boring corporate mooks you'd expect, John stands out as the most boring of them all. He wasn't a gossip, or a groaner, he didn't complain, he didn't push his work on another person, he didn't kiss the boss' ass, he didn't leer at the sexy new assistant, he just worked.
Wake up, go to work, go home, sleep, repeat. That is John's life. He wasn't particularly happy with it, but neither does he actively hate it. It was just life, that's all. He never had any ambitions, never had any goals he wanted to achieve, no dreams that he longs for. He's working because that was what he was supposed to do. He went to elementary to get good enough grades to finish middle school, then do well enough in that to finish high school, then college, now he's working. Some people work to live while others live to work, but John just works to work.

John was just a face in the crowd, a cog in the machine, a sheep in the flock, whatever other turn of phrases you have to express just how average he is. He was just one of the seven billion people living in this world. And yet, for just a single, strange moment, John became one of the most special existence in this world.
A flash of light engulfed the world, a light so blindingly bright it lit up the darkness of the universe. That light grew, and grew, and grew. Planet after planet, solar system after solar system, nebula after nebula, the light spread until it reached the deepest, darkest corner of space. And the universe became blank.
And a voice was heard across the universe.
