Among low mountains and rolling fields was a flower which bloomed under stars. It shimmered light blue, reflecting the moon light above.
One person in particular was enamored by the beauty of the bloom. Her name was Elm and every night, she would go to admire the soft glow of it’s petals. Peace was rare to come by in their life and their peers, so Elm would enjoy these moments as treasures.
As time passed, a new discovery came about from a researcher. Elm’s peers hailed the revelation as their savior, and the flower lover became swept up in the craze. However, none knew of the details of the invention.
That did not mean Elm and her fellows did not reap the benefits. Soon, hardships began to fade one by one. The fame of the scientist grew further, believing that their discovery brought on a utopia. In these times, Elm, who once cherished the flower neglected to visit. There is no point in going to a flower for peace when she already achieved it.
Then, one night, he looked to the sky, and Elm was reminded of the soft glow of her flower. Nostalgic, they returned to fields where their beloved lay. Yet when they got their, they were not alone, the researcher was there, plucking now dim petals.
Appalled, they questioned the scientist. In return, the Utopia Bringer spoke of the progress made, and how much better their lives were. Elm was told of the numbers which proved the quality of life they had, and reminded them of the life before.
Elm couldn’t argue, for they believed that their place was a simple flower watcher. And she believes she has benefited greatly from this. The numbers given simply cemented her viewpoint, and relented. Besides, there are other flowers which they could visit.
Smiling, the researcher thanked the flower watcher and continued his work. Disgusted but pacified, Elm walked away to find a new flower. And after some time, she did. In the middle of the forest, where the light shined between the trees, lay a flower which bloomed in the sunny sky. It was warm to the touch, and shone a brilliant yellow. Elm promised to cherish this bloom in memory of the last one, and visit it every day.

One day, she went to her spot and found the researcher, waiting for her. The Utopia Bringer spoke out, saying that this flower is needed as well. In anger, they began to curse at the researcher, saying that one was enough.
Holding out his hand, the scientist motioned them to stop. The flower watcher could only stutter into silence, for the title “Utopia Bringer” had weight to it. The researcher then told of the greater good, and how they shouldn’t be so selfish. Only they would enjoy this flower, yet if we used it for progress, everyone will benefit.
Embittered, the flower watcher spat on the feet of the researcher, but held their tongue. Slowly, the “Utopia Bringer’s” words coiled around their mind. Elm began to believe that she was center minded. “What of my peers?” Elm thought. “Do I not cherish them?”. The flower watcher accepted that this was the best for her society.
So Elm embarked on exodus once more. It took them many days, yet Elm finally found another flower, one which bloomed in the dawn and closed up in the sunset. It reflected the time of day, being a orange hue in the morning, and a pale glow in the night. Determined to not have this one taken from them, Elm promised once more that she would not be persuaded again.
The “Utopia Bringer” eventually came and spoke out to them. The scientist had a proposal to the flower watcher, and reluctantly Elm heard them out. There was a land full of flowers which would never wither, and which he could gaze upon them everyday. Smiling, the researcher held a written contract, and a pen.
She first was outraged once more, but then held her tongue. A land of flowers which they never withered? It sounds like a dream scape. Elm still remained suspicious, but she signed the contract, and begrudgingly agreed to go to this land.
Trust should be given to those wiser than them. While this scientist benefits, Elm benefits greatly as well. Also, if she asks too many questions, this deal may fly away.
However, when the flower watcher arrived, she wept. For it was a land of plastic flowers.
