Domination Over DNA

A mutation is a change in the DNA sequence of an organism. Mutations can result from errors in DNA replication during cell division, exposure to mutagens or a viral infection.

WEDNESDAY 07TH UNDECIMBER 2016

The winter chill mirrored the coldness in my heart. Years of university had finally led me here, to the front lines of medicine. But even now, as a doctor, I wasn't free. My supervisor was a constant presence, a shadow I couldn't shake. My hatred for her was a dark, persistent hum. The hospital assaulted my senses from the moment I walked in. The relentless beeping and whirring were a torment to my sensitive hearing. Every sound was amplified, every noise a sharp jab. But her voice, slicing through the chaos, was the worst of all.

"Hey, Zai, you're late. We've talked about this. You're screwing up my records with the higher-ups. I swear to God, why can't you just be a decent employee?" she snapped, the words sharp and accusatory.

I met her gaze with a cold stare. "Fuck off. If it weren't for that impressive rack, you wouldn't be in that position, you top-heavy hippo." Her face twisted with disgust, but the expression quickly morphed into something else—concern, a flicker of genuine worry.

"Hey," she said, her voice dropping to a low, almost hesitant tone. "We have to do that MRI scan today." The words landed softly, yet they struck me like a physical blow, sending my thoughts spiraling into darkness.

"Thanks," I mumbled, trying to sound nonchalant. "I hope it's nothing too crazy." The truth was, I'd been conducting experiments on myself, using a cocktail of chemicals and substances of… questionable origin. "Unknown origin" was putting it mildly. I knew for a fact they weren't from Earth; the genetic makeup was unlike anything I'd ever encountered. When I first discovered it, a naive part of me considered sharing it with the world. But I’d seen what happened to those who dared to unveil something precious—the higher-ups always swooped in to claim the credit. Not this time. Not this fucking guy. But now… it looked like I might have cancer.

I climbed into the MRI machine and closed my eyes. The familiar whirring began, and the scan commenced. These twenty-five minutes felt like an eternity. The rhythmic clicking, punctuated by small but distinct bangs and the occasional thump, became a relentless assault on my senses. Then, for a fleeting moment, an eerie silence descended. It was shattered by a sudden, violent bang followed by a high-pitched screech. That was all I heard. I opened my eyes. Everything was white. Had I just died?

Sensation flooded back: sound, sight, smell, touch, and even taste. But for once, there was an unnerving quiet. You could hear a pin drop five miles away—well, I could. Something felt… different. My body thrummed with an unnatural vitality. I wriggled out of the MRI machine, and the sight that greeted me was staggering. Bodies. Bodies everywhere. At first glance, they appeared unconscious, but a closer look revealed the chilling truth: no pulse. I spotted my ex-supervisor among them. She hadn't survived either. My eyes met hers— our eyes made four. A wry smile tugged at my lips. Then I remembered the flicker of concern in her eyes, the way she’d looked at me in recent months as my health steadily declined—a decline entirely of my own making, though she didn’t know that. She had cared, a little. Did she deserve this?

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

I whispered, "Fuck you," and flipped her off, a single tear tracing a path down my cheekbone. Yeah, I’d hated her, but we were more frenemies than true enemies, you know? I gave her a pe██████████████████████████████████████████████████. Sorry you dont get to see that.
