Prologue - The Sketch

Prologue - The Sketch

Melvin was a terminal cancer patient. One day the make a wish foundation approached the seven year old Melvin to fulfil his last wish. So, he told them, holding up a picture  that he drew.

“I want Pendraguin to exist. ”

May the simplest things in life become  outrageously stupid.

The background story of a stupid drawing.

Updates when I feel like it.

Categories: Stupidity.

(simplest things must be exaggerated like an epic journey. )

There sitting in the hospital ward was Melvin. Melvin unlike other children in the ward had one distinctive feature. He had no hair.  He sat  like a sage in the bed, even with the tubes running through his nose. People in purple uniforms came waltzing into the room. In Melvin's eyes, they were mages of the wishing society.  For the other children had their wishes granted.  The power of the stars, a great power indeed. Their only reason for existence was to fulfill wishes.

“Make a wish,” they chanted.

The men in purple robes waved their twisted staves in the air. They were prancing and singing unintelligible songs of peace and joy.

Melvin turned his head looking into their eyes.“I want Pendraguin to become a real existence.”

He held out drawing of utmost artistic genius and the purple mages of the stars ran off with holy script in hand. What could go wrong? Mixing a macaroni penguin, the penguin with the orange feather fringe  and a western dragon with great scale wings, magical strength and endurance and skin tougher than diamonds?

Despite the mismatch, the wizards of the stars worked day in and day out. Finally Pendraguin was born. After three days they let the little boy venture to the mortal realm to play. It was a realm where new creatures were born in a blink of an eye.

The creation waddled up to the boy.  Its beady eyes large like a puppy, fine tiny  grey feathers covered its body each minute feather held the toughness of a dragon yet were as soft as goose down. The feathers overlapped just as scales overlap the a fish, making its  whole body glisten as one giant scale. On closer inspection you could see individual feathers as pendraguin waddled about. The feather crest on Pendraguin’s head was like a moving flexible vine almost like horns yet they flittered about Pendraguin’s head depending on the mood.  On Pendraguin’s  back were orange spikes much like the dragon’s  and extended to its long tail.  Its beak had a severe and mismatched overbite that even an orthodontist would not be able to quote a price to fix.

The little boy picked up the Pendraguin and with a face about to break, his  consternation  grew. Had the wizard of stars made a mistake? The wizards panicked, they only wanted to make the child smile.   As he stared at the creation taken from a simple sheet of paper.  He cried with tears dripping from his face.  “Pendraguin isn’t a monster, grant it a conscience. "

Thus this started my existence.

When I first opened my eyes the short, bald priest was holding me to the sky.

"Meerrrk mèeeerrk merk."

Like a puppy, I followed the priest, and, he in turn passed on his knowledge. From village to village we travelled. During one starlit sunset when the ocean reflected the sky. I sat in my emperor's chair and looked up pleading for Melvin to scratch my ears.

"Merrk."

I thumped my hind feet and rolled exposing my belly. Melvin unpacked some beef jerky and hard cheese. Was this a momentous celebration?

"I must ascend to the next realm. As my creation I am confident you can survive in this world on your own.”

"Meerrk!?"

“On second thoughts,  let me make sure you have some sort of, umm, survivability rate.”

A golden spool appeared and Melvin weaved the fine spider like thread into my matted feathers, it faded under the dusk light.

“Take care my friend.” Melvin hugged Pendraguin. His body began to fade and the outlines or his tiny priest body were as golden as the sun; it faded into  a golden dandelion seed  head. The golden cotton fluffs spiralled in the sky one by one  dancing across the ocean like a swarm of fireflies.

“MEEEERRRRKKK!”

One of the cotton gold dandelion fluffs spiralled near Pendraguin as if to say goodbye one last time. However, one should never wave anything near a Pendraguin’s beak. Its creator should have known better.

Snap.  Crunch. Crunch. Crunch.

Pendraguin lost in its thoughts looked up to the sky and groaned.

“Merrrrrk. ”

Unfortunately the bald priest Melvin never visited me again and from this day onward I will never forget how my existence came to be. To ends of the worlds I must travel in hopes to find the godly plane and once again meet my creator.
