PeaceKeepers
Chapter 2

Chapter 2

Marcus had a lot of time to think as he was driven to the second facility, the place where he would continue the Peacekeeper Project.

"I wonder if these other two people will be as strong as me," Marcus pondered, glancing out the window at the scenery rushing by.

The driver didn't say much, focusing on the road ahead.

Soon they pulled up to a large white building that looked like a cross between a gym and a hospital.

"This is the place," the driver said, getting out of the car.

"Thanks," Marcus said, getting out as well.

The building was huge, with large windows and a glass front door. A basketball court could be seen through the glass. Marcus then walked to the front door where Dr. Hughes was waiting with two armed guards.

"Are we ready?" Dr. Hughes greeted him with a smile.

"Nice place," Marcus commented.

"It's not bad," Dr. Hughes replied.

"You're the first to arrive, shortly the other two will be here. Then we can start your training."

Marcus nodded, taking in the sight of the place. It was a big change from the compound he was just at. He looked forward to starting his new training.

Dr. Hughes gave Marcus a rundown of the facility.

"This building was created pre-exodus. It has now been transformed into a facility where we can create Peacekeepers like you."

"Why would you decide to build all of this on Titan?" Marcus inquired.

"Because Titan has a dense atmosphere that is similar to Earth. It is also very remote from the colonies. Not many people know we've gone this far into our solar system. People believe we've only stopped at Mars. They aren't wrong though. Mars is where we've stopped because of the war," Dr. Hughes informed him.

"What's been happening in the war since I've been training here?" Marcus questioned.

"Not good. The UNE are pressing onto Mars, but we have no real strategy. Space is too big, and the guerrilla warfare that the Martian Federation has been using has halted our press. They attack us on Earth, which eludes our focus on an invasion. We are just fighting a stalemate, and the casualties are high. We are hoping that Peacekeepers can turn the tides," Dr. Hughes said, with a hint of doubt in her excitement.

"This way is your new barracks," Dr. Hughes said, leading Marcus into a room that was increasingly more lavish than his barracks that he lived in for basic training.

"This is your living quarters. We will give you some time to unpack and get settled in," Dr. Hughes said, leaving Marcus to his own devices.

Marcus chuckled at the thought of him unpacking. He had nothing before he came here and has nothing. The only thing he has is a thought of what his future will be like. He has hope. He has a purpose. But there's always the doubt. Is it worth it? Marcus shakes his head and thinks to himself, "You are here, you have the opportunity."

He looks around the room. It is large, with a king-sized bed, a dresser, and a small couch. There is a desk in the corner and a small bathroom off to the side. Connecting the room is a short hallway leading to a living room. The living room had a large couch and a TV.

"Wow, this is nice," Marcus said, looking around.

"I'm glad you like it," Dr. Hughes replied, a smile on her face.

"So, when will the others be here?" Marcus asked.

"Any minute now," Dr. Hughes replied, her eyes glinting with excitement.

The narrative has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the infringement.

"So, we're all successes," Marcus mused, walking over to the couch.

"Don't get ahead of yourself; you're not a success until the UNE generals believe you are."

"How do I do that?"

"Show them, complete missions."

Marcus nodded, looking around the room.

"Well, I'll let you get settled in. I'll bring in the next candidate when they arrive."

"Sounds good," Marcus said, flopping onto the couch.

Marcus waited there for minutes until the door opened again, with Dr. Hughes walking through. Following her was a woman. She was tall, with light brown hair, and an athletic build.

"Marcus, this is Anna. Anna, this is Marcus," Dr. Hughes introduced them.

"Nice to meet you," Anna said, a smile on her face.

"Likewise," Marcus replied.

"I'll leave you two to get acquainted," Dr. Hughes said, closing the door behind her.

Anna sat down on the couch, looking at Marcus.

"Soooo, how are you?" Marcus asked.

"I'm alright, just nervous."

"Me too."

There was a pause before Marcus spoke again.

"Did you experience the same thing that happened with the other candidates?"

"Yeah, I did," Anna said, a distant look in her eyes.

"It was horrible. The screams, the noises."

"Yeah, I could hear them too."

"I kept telling myself it was part of the process, that we were making history."

"I agree," said Marcus. "We are making history."

There was a pause before Anna spoke again.

"Do you think the other candidate will be here soon?"

"I don't know. But I'm sure he'll be here soon."

They both fell silent, each lost in their own thoughts. Marcus then focused his thoughts of home. He began remembering his brother, his family. How he wanted to see them so badly. How he wanted to prove himself to the world, even if it was an evil world.

A moment later, the door opened again, and Dr. Hughes stepped through.

"Alright, the last one is here. This is Noah."

Noah was a bit older than Marcus, but younger than Anna. He had dark hair and a serious demeanor.

"Nice to meet you," Noah said, his tone even.

"Likewise," Marcus and Anna replied.

"Now that you're all here I can tell you the last stage of the Peacekeeper Initiate," Dr. Hughes said, sitting down on the couch.

"We have the army, the navy, the marines, and even special forces, but the Peacekeepers is another sect of military that the UNE are adding. This corps will be aimed at protecting the Earth and the colonies themselves. This program is in its final stage of training where you three will learn teamwork under watch from the highest decorated members of the SEALS."

"Excuse me ma'am, but aren't the SEALS discontinued?" Noah asked.

"They are, the men you will be working with are retirees and ex-SEAL members. They are the best in the field of close combat and tactical maneuvers. These are the people who are going to train you three into Peacekeepers."

Marcus was a little intimidated. He'd never heard of the SEALS before. They must be something special, he thought.

"Now, I'll have you meet them. Please follow me." Dr. Hughes led them down a long hallway, through a door, and into a large room.

The next part of their training begins. Walking down the hall, Anna's mouth opens to speak. "Isn't this process moving way too quickly?" Noah speaks up. "I think it's going at a perfectly rational pace. We are in a war, and there are things needed to be done right here and right now. There is no time to waste." "Well said Noah," Dr. Hughes compliments him. Marcus looks at Noah with laser eyes. He sees Noah as competition later down the road. Dr. Hughes stops the three.

"This is the simulation chamber. This is where you will learn teamwork and trust, among other things."

The room was large, with a high ceiling. It had a dirt floor and a few obstacles scattered around.

Marcus looked around, his gaze landing on a group of men standing near the entrance.

"These are your trainers, the retired SEALS," Dr. Hughes said.

"Greetings initiates," one of the men, a tall man with a shaved head, said. "This is going to be fun," a smaller older one spoke. "Please, everyone take a seat," Dr. Hughes gestured.

The three sat down, facing the men.

"Now, let's introduce ourselves," the first man said.

"My name is Jason."

"My name is Frank."

"My name is Jack."

"Let's begin," Jack demanded. From behind their backs they handed a VR headset device and fake guns. "Most of your training will be done in simulations as to being in the real field. We are unsure of what you are capable of with the new bodies you have obtained. The stage of the program is just designed to build teamwork. Every day for eleven hours a day, you are to train in this facility through programmed scenarios. They include search and destroy, hostage rescue, defusing a bomb, elimination, etcetera." Jason explained. "What are we killing?" Marcus asked.

"Rebels. They will look and act like the Martian Federation," Jack answered. "Your training will be designed to help you learn teamwork and trust. As of now, we don't know how you will react in the field. Your reactions and teamwork are key to completing the simulations." Frank continued.

"You will wear these VR headsets, and you will use these fake guns," Jack held up the VR headsets. "The guns are not real, but will feel like it. If the guns are aimed at you, they will send a shock to your body, and you will die."

"We would die?" Anna asked nervously.

"No, but you will feel an intense pressure in the area it hit you. Try not to friendly fire," Frank said. "We will watch you from outside the facility. We will analyze and make notes about how you three interact. Any questions?" Jason asked. The three nodded in compliance. They knew the last phase was going to test them and it would lead them into a brighter future.
