Synopsis
UPDATES PAUSED WHILE I WRITE MORE.
When Balto is taken from his farm home in Ohio and shipped up to Alaska in late 1923, he is caged and denied freedom, missing home... until a mysterious fox breaks him out. Together they travel the Alaskan wilderness to find Balto a way home, and in the process Balto gets caught up in a dog sled team in Nome.
When winter comes, the brings with it a dangerous disease called diphtheria, which threatens to kill the entire town, especially its children. Nome's only doctor doesn't have anti-toxin to fight the sickness, and it cannot be delivered by ship because the ports are icebound. The only way to get medicine to Nome is by dog sled.
Anti-toxin is located in Anchorage, and sent by train to Nenana. It is up to 20 dog sled teams to relay the medicine 674 miles to diphtheria stricken Nome, through some of the most extreme weather conditions known to man. Balto is made a lead dog on one of the teams; will he be able to make it through and help save Nome, or will he perish like many of the other dogs?
How will Balto cope with this new destiny? Is he the right dog for the job? Will he ever get home to Ohio, or will he find his belonging in Alaska?
This book was written for the Serum Run's 100th year anniversary, in honor of the mushers and dogs that risked their lives to save their family, friends and neighbors.
