Prologue

Hey, so you know those times... You know, like when you're caught sneaking through the most powerful man in the world’s house in an alternate world ruled by a bunch of strong idiots?

Have you never been in a situation like that before? Is it just me?

Huh. I guess I should have seen that coming.

Well, it doesn't go well, I can tell you that.

My name is Ben Creeson, and I got dropped into another dimension.

It started one day after work. Where did I work? Shut up and listen! Anyway, it started on a rainy day. And I mean rain. None of this light pitter-patter nonsense, but full-on, pounding, heavy rain.

I was heading to my friend's house to take him up on his offer to drive me home from his house because I, the smart guy that I am, neglected to bring an umbrella, and didn’t wish to take the half-hour walk back to my house through the rain.

‘I didn’t even bring a rain jacket. It’s too cold.’

Then the rain stopped falling as hard around me. I could see the rain, it hadn't calmed down, but it seemed to be avoiding me.

After that, I just started falling, fast.

This wasn't anything like the books, no. I hit the ground just as hard as a regular person and spent a while unconscious.

But the world I woke up in... That's something I wish we could all see back on Earth.

----------------------------------------

'Are you alright?'

Upon hearing the voice, I scream. Hey, no judging! The voice originates from a creature made of moving smoke, with glowing holes for eyes! You can't blame me for being freaked out by that!

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

My scream seems to frighten the wispy creature as well, and it quickly rushes out of the room as quickly as a creature made of smoke could move, which is... Actually pretty fast.

As soon as it’s gone, three other creatures come into the room, a rocky-looking creature with human size and shape and grass all over it, a tree with legs, arms, and eyes, and an... Elf.

Okay, what?

At this point, I’m freaking out. What happened to me? Why is this happening to me?

What the Elf says next is even more perplexing.

'Do you know what a System is?'

I try to respond this time, instead of screaming. 'Wha...'

He, the Elf, that is, looks at me for a while before speaking again.

'I'll take that as a no, then. Well, just think-'

He stops as the whole building, and assumedly much more, is shaken by a massive tremor, but it feels unnatural, artificial.

'We need to go. Stay here, and you'll be safe. Do not look out the window.'

The three of them file out of the room as quickly as they came in, and I’m left by myself again.

For the next three hours, I wait, perfectly still, for them to come back.

Okay, so I don’t wait for more than five minutes, and even then it’s only to make sure they won't be coming back soon.

So what do I do while I’m alone? Look out the window of course!

There’s a massive city outside, with towering stone architecture, but the whole world’s in chaos.

Hundreds of enormous portals are littered around the midnight sky, spewing out pitch-black monstrosities, which fall hundreds of metres before hitting the ground with enough force to shatter the streets below them.

I can hear thousands of people below, all running around screaming, trying to get to safety.

One thing stands out more than anything else. Impressive really, considering the hell that’s raining down on the world.

In the sky, there’s a man floating near the portals with massive a dark-purple aura seeping off of him, seeming to poison the purity of the otherwise beautiful city. The moment I look at him, his head snaps around to look towards me, and his eyes flash a dark colour.

My head is instantly filled with thoughts of horror and submission, and I stumble back, my mind reeling at what I’ve just witnessed.

He grins a wide, evil smile, not that I’m paying him any attention, and snaps his fingers.

‘Little boys shouldn’t be messing around with someone of my class.’
