Chapter 1- "This is the dungeon"

...And the angels looked down from heaven and desired the women on earth. But He was not happy. Who cares if He was anyway? The angels mated with the human women and their children were called...

-The ravings of a deranged priest.

"This is the dungeon"

Troy was a level 68 priest. In real life, he was Salem Magi - a 28 year old architect. Despite graduating from university with good grades, Salem found it impossible to gain clients for architectural firm he owned. Besides, in his country, there didn't seem to be many people looking for architects as people did not usually build houses. They bought houses. After all, building a house took a long time, at the least, a year. It was too long for a family that wanted to immediately move into a house

Thus, Royal Road was very important to him. It was a way for him to gather clients. It was his gold mine.

However, the capsule was very expensive and while the monthly payments were not as expensive as the capsule was. They required a person working part time to go without many expenses for that month. It was definitely impossible for him, who was essentially unemployed to pay the cost.

He got a part time job at the store in his neighbourhood in order to pay for the monthly fees. In order to pay for the capsule, he borrowed money from his parents (something he swore never to do when he walked out on them after they disagreed with him on his choice of employment). But Royal Road was worth it. It was an opportunity he could not miss. Also, it was a load of fun.

There was a rumour of a skeleton dungeon which gave massive experience and drops no matter how many times you entered it. It was a bit dangerous but if you survived and defeated the boss the rewards were amazing. More amazingly, the dungeon seemed to be for players between levels 40 and 100. It was a great way to level up quickly. However, many players scoffed at such an idea. For there to be a dungeon like that without any special requirements was impossible.

When Troy heard about the dungeon, he immediately knew that this was his chance to level up quickly. Apparently, he really joined the right guild. They had the same thought as him.

However, at the moment, another guild was in control of that dungeon.  Naturally, his guild did not appreciate this and decided to 'help' them out by taking it off their hands. It wasn't even considered a conflict. The other guild was that weak.

So far, the dungeon had been a disappointment. True, skeletons were difficult to defeat. For the uninformed that is. But for the level 72 mage that was Chile, it was a piece of cake. Apparently, when skeletons weren't commanded by a necromancer or lich it was possible for them to be defeated with fire. Just like normal corpses.

Truly a disappointment, this was what Troy felt. He was in a party of 3- him, Chile and Chakus a level 69 warrior. With Chakus providing offence, Chile supplying defense and him replenishing their health and mana, they were a well balanced basic team. He understood that the dungeon was used by people at a lower level than he was but he had expected that there would be something useful for himself here. Despite this, after being there for a while, he found himself disappointed.Just a lot of rubbish then. Useless hype. However, as he was thinking of this, he and his party had unknowingly activated a trap and fell through a pit. Dammit, if only we had a trap setter.

I knew when the idiots fell into the hole. Surprised? Once in a while I liked to play pranks on the people entering my Dungeon. It usually happened after I died. Last time, a couple of skeletons disguised themselves and drained my victims of their HP. As a result, when they reached me, I was able to use them as stress relief. They were so drained, they weren't even able to see me as I threw needles from a distance.

In case anyone is wondering, my name is Ring and I am the Boss Monster of this dungeon. I think I've died...49 times and no, I am not a lich or a necromancer. I am just an ordinary undead like the rest. I wonder who had the bright idea to put a dungeon of the undead without any sort of commanding officer. The undead are not supposed to be independent. We are like 120% more powerful with a necromancer or a similar class. I suppose I am a little bit different. I really valued my independence. Anyway, I don't know how but I know everything that goes on in my Dungeon and I am sometimes able to control it like a part of my body. This seemed to be one of those times. Anyway...

Troy was beginning to regret underestimating the dungeon. I should have brought more people. He was setting off traps from left to right. Despite, the fact that he was a priest, it seemed like if there were enough of the undead, the game would calculate that the undead had a bigger advantage and he would not be of much use. Of course, it depended on the power and stats of priest but for Troy Royal Road was mainly a way of getting contacts so he did not concentrate a lot on stats and more on levelling after all, the higher your level, the more people you can connect with.

"Watch out,"Chile the mage said while using a fireball to remove the skeleton that was standing over Troy, "This dungeon seems to be more dangerous than was originally reported." No shit, Sherlock. I mean, it's not like we fell through the floor, got our HP drained by a couple of skeletons(by the way, I didn't know they could do that) and I am practically useless in this fight. I mean, I just decided- Oh yeah, that floor looks nice, I'll just fall on it to check the texture. But Troy did not say any of his thoughts. Not only was he only useful as a replenishment potion (which they had a lot of), he was the lowest levelled. Also, finally, they had started getting experience and the more they killed, the more he got experience. What's wrong with getting experience for free?

All of a sudden, the hallway grew quiet. The three members became more cautious. This type of silence usually happened a person was approaching the boss chamber.

None of them noticed but the hallway was slowly becoming darker. Without any warning both Chile and Chakus were yanked by some unknown force and I heard them scream. By the way, Chakus apparently sounds like a girl when he is scared. Do with that what you will.

"Chakus, Chile," I said using the whisper function. However, when no one answered, my suspicions were confirmed. They were both dead and only I was left. I, the level 68 priest and the weakest level in the party. At this surprising turn of events, I decided to be super cautious. Basically, to stand in the middle of the hallway and try to see if there was an exit so I can get out of this accursed place.

This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.

It seemed as if the dungeon was sentient because as soon as I showed any inclination to turning back, the lights behind me started going out. I decided to not find out what was going on behind and started to walk forward. But as I kept going forward, the lights kept going out at a faster rate till I walking quickly, jogging and finally outright running. When it seemed that the darkness would catch up to me, I ran straight through a door.

Losing my momentum, I fell on the floor. I heard a massive amount of laughter and thus I looked up. My surprise must have shown on my face because the figure I was looking at seemed to find it extremely funny and started laughing more. I seemed to be looking at a human...

Spoiler :

Thought it was a cliffy didn't you

-

"Hello there. My name is Ring"

"Ah..." I couldn't say anything due to shock. Why was there a human here was the only thing I could think of. I came to the conclusion that it was a player who was unaware that the dungeon belonged to my guild.

"Excuse me, but this dungeon belongs to my guild - The Silvery Spiders. As you have not paid the fee to use this dungeon, you have to leave."

"Pshaw." Upon hearing my answer, the player started to laugh. He brought out a knife and I instantly became cautious and on my guard.

"Sorry," the guy said while still laugh, " I just thought you guys should rather be called The Barking Puppies. You have no sting."

Now I was (understandably) annoyed. Not only had my party been wiped out easily but some unknown guy was here dissing my guild. The stress was too much dammit.

"Would like to see how much of a sting we have." I seriously don't know why I said that. I was only a priest without other players or the undead, I was basically useless.

"Em, I don't think that's a good idea." The guy said. I was surprised, he seemed to be nervous all of a sudden was he that weak. I started to smirk

"Moving, that is," the guy continued. I looked at him curiously.

"You see, this whole room is covered in traps and you were about to step in one." I looked down. Whoa, the guy was right. Looking down at the traps made me realise that I hadn't met the Boss Monster. So why was the guy still here?

"Hey, why are you still here"

"I'm waiting for the next player," the guy said. Ah is that so. Is he waiting for someone to arrive so he can join their party. That was weird but there were many weird players in the game.

"Well, there don't seem to be any more players coming so you are leaving right this moment and.." As I said this, I thought I heard the boy say "this is boring".

"What.." I started to say but never got the opportunity because the guy was already halfway across the room towards me. I had no offensive skills so I decided to use SLOW-  a skill I got as a reward for a quest which slows the targets movement for a duration of time. However, surprise surprise, the boy showed no difference in movement. Ah well, I thought and prepared myself for imminent death. I would revive anyway and next time I would come back with a larger party.

SLASH.

I expected to die but instead the drain on my HP was barely noticeable. I opened my eyes and looked into the guy's eyes. Infuriatingly, he was smiling. It was comparable to the smile of a child that had finally got the toy it wanted. I involuntarily shivered

"Can't kill you that easily now can I? Don't worry, you are worried about being useless, right. I'll make good use of you."

"Why?" I managed to ask despite his menacing aura.

"Why?" He repeated with a stupefied look, "Because I am the Boss Monster, you little shit." When I heard this, I cursed Freya in my mind. How come she didn't rescue me from this this situation? Dammit, I’m never paying money to the church again.

The screaming bastard had finally died. Satisfied, I looked around my room and finally decided that i had enough. I had sifted through the fine wine and unfortunately the dregs. I was quite bored of my Dungeon actually.

So, at that moment, I made a decision i had never thought of before, I decided to leave my dungeon. Yes, I despaired of seeing the same dreary walls, of being around unintelligent skeletons, of fighting sub-par opponents. I should go out into the world, right.

With a vision of my glorious future in my head, I walked towards the exit of my Dungeon and tried to step out. Bye bye Dull world. However, as I tried to leave i got this message

Error System Message:This action is not allowed

I decided there and then that nothing was going to stop me from leaving the dungeon and after several tries with an error message a new message came up.

System Message:This will lead to you losing several levels.

Yes

No

Of course I was willing to accept anything in order for me to go out and explore the word. So I selected Yes

Command Accepted.

Level will be reduced to level 20

"Wait, what. Stop!!!"

But, it was too late. The command had already being accepted. I would have to roam the world just like a newbie?
