Day Akino

Day Akino

The black-haired woman stared down at the helpless silver-haired boy laying on the floor. Blood dripping echoed around the silent and cool room.

“You little demon,” The woman screamed once more, mercilessly stroking his back with the metallic whip. “That’s what you get for stealing in my house,” Her eyes were so red it was as if they had been painted in blood. Her hardened face had veins popping in the corners.

“I’m sorry, I thought it was my father’s money,” Day says, trying to catch up with his breath.

“You are not Maximilian’s blood, that witch somehow cursed her. You will never, bare the Lanera name,”

The sound of the rain beating the window filled Day’s ears. He gritted his teeth, he felt so angry, he wanted to punch her, release his pent-up emotions against her, but even in that rage, he knew better.

Her footsteps got fainter and fainter as he walked away from Day, who was now trying to stand up.

“These brats are getting on my nerves,” She says in a malicious tone, staring at the babies crying in the compact crib. “Perhaps, I should,” Her red eyes didn’t blink, coldly staring at babies.

“You touch them and I kill you,” In the moment of a second, Day pointed his mother’s katana at her neck. His breathing was heavy and disjointed. His eyes became blurry, silence all around him.

“Step away from her Day,” His half-brother, Sukai, says behind him. He had black hair like his mother and emerald green eyes that the girls adored. He was taller than Day, but not by a lot. He had a cold aura surrounding him.

10 swords pointed at Day and his baby sibling. That was Sukai’s Orizambi art, sword manifestation.

“We’re leaving!” Day shoves his katana to his side, grabbing his crying siblings. The pain and bruises aching all around seemed to have disappeared at the moment. He takes his backpack and wears it on his back, racing out the door.

“Sorry, Angie, Gray,” Day says to his baby siblings. “But we cannot stay here any longer,”

Day covers the baby with his head, blocking the heavy rain from hitting his siblings. He races out of the compound without looking back, heading for the sectors of the city.

It was the last place anybody would want to live nevertheless raise a kid, but that junk of a place, to him, would be better than that hellhole of a mansion.

About 20 minutes passed before Day could smell the atrocious scent coming from the cluttered gutters. The dead and perhaps undead bodies lying around were the landmark of Sector 7.

“We should get through the night there,” Day says, heading for a blue kiosk. The younger one, Angie was still crying, and the oldest one had been silent for a while.

“Hey Gray,” Day muttered, as he felt his heart sinking to his stomach.

His hands twitched a bit, as a big smile drew on Day’s face.

“Thank goodness,” He laughed. Laying his head on the cold and hardwood of the kiosk. “I’ll make sure you guys never have to worry or be afraid, that I promise you,”

He grabbed a blanket out of his backpack, spreading the blue sewn blanket over the wet floor.

“Twenty thousand,” Day shouted as he threw the blocks of orizambimite on the stack. His messy orange hair was full of the black orizambimite particles.

“For someone of your compact size, you sure do pack a lot of power,” The supervisor says behind. Like Day, he wore a torn black uniform. He had brown hair and brown eyes, was about 5 years older than Day, and much much taller, about 6 inches difference.

“Should you be surprised?” Day says with a smug look on his face. “For someone who will become the future Saint Sentinel, this is just child’s play,” Day nodded to himself.

“Right,” The supervisor sighs, that must’ve been the millionth time he’d heard Day say it. “Here,” He handed a brown envelope to him.

“It hasn’t been a month yet though,” Day refuses.

“But a bonus the boss wanted to give to his model employee,” The supervisor tucks it into Day’s pocket. “See you next week,”

Day grabbed his backpack and dusted the particles off him. “I won’t be here next week remember,” He smiles. “The Sentinel trials are just around the corner,”

The supervisor yawns. “I remember you saying that,” He nods. “Well I’m not really into Sentinel stuff but I know how much it means to you, so good luck,” He salutes

“Thanks,” Day grinned, as he raced out of the mines.

The Saint Sentinel was known to be the most powerful individual in the entire kingdom, with some even suggesting that he was the strongest of the 7 Saints in the eastern continent. The title was given to someone who was the pinnacle of strength and the embodiment of hope. Day met the current Saint Sentinel, Skylar Storm, about a decade ago, shortly after he left the Lanera mansion... In the period of despair and gloom, Saint Storm taught him hope and aspiration. How to move on, how to protect and savor, ideals that Day embodies.

“Welcome back big brother,” The joyful voices were music to Days’ ears. His tired face suddenly sprang into life. Their warm hands wrapped around his neck, this was brotherly heaven.

“Angie, Gray, good evening,” Day says with the most cheerful voice.

“How was work?” Angie, the youngest one asked.

“It was great,” Day smiled, digging through his bag. “I got something for you guys,”

The smell of barbeque and fried rice filled the small crooked house. “Hot sauce and spicy for you my dear little sister,” Day gave her a bag. “Less greasy with a lot more rice for my dear little brother,”

Gray grinned as he grabbed the food.

“The water came back right?” Day asked, heading to the bathroom.

“Yeah, in the afternoon,” Angie says as he inhaled the spicy scent oozing from the bag. “Great, so you both have taken a shower already right?”

“Yes sir,” Gray responded this time.

Day smiles, dipping himself into the hot bath. “Aah, don’t mind if I do”. He almost melts into the water.

“Starting tomorrow you guys will be attending the academy,” Day says, drying his hair.

“Are you sure it’s okay big brother?” Gray asks.

Day smiles, running his hands through his silky brown hair. “Of course it’s okay. I don’t want you guys living in this dump for another week or so,”

“This dump is our home,” Angie says.

“A home I’ve become attached to also,” Day admitted. “But, in all honesty, this isn’t the best to live is it?”

“It really isn’t,” Angie laughs. “Uncle Inukia has been laying around in the central plaza for the past three nights, I’m not even sure he’s conscious,”

Gray laughs alongside her. “True, he goes through that like every other month,”

Day smiles at their vibrant laughs and voices.

“Just be yourselves where ever you go,” Day smiles, heading out the door.

The cool air runs through Day’s hair as he watches the cold body lying in the middle of the street.

“The center of the street isn’t a bed Mr. Inukia,” Day says, grabbing his shoulders.

“That damned woman, I’ll get her back for this,” His cranky voice filled the dark streets.

“I’m sure you will,” Day smiles. “Now let's get you back home,”

“They took my keys and the motels won’t take in a broke-ass drunk like me,” He laughs, but Day could hear the vibrant of pain aching from it.

Peasants have always been treated this way, since the beginning of time.

“The nobles really have no mercy,” Day sighed.

“You better hurry up and become Saint Sentinel,” M. Inukia smiles. “This place doesn’t have a lot going for it, but ever since you and your siblings appeared, this place has become a little bit better,” He laughs, then stumbles. “You have a kind heart my boy, something our world unfortunately lacks,”

“Let’s….get you a place to sleep,”
