The room begins to rattle and cling as the elevator reaches further into the core of the derelict planet. The riots have slowly been escalating, and with all the armies gone hunting a rogue governor, they have grown uncontrollable. Strikes are now full-blown resistance. Caroline has attempted to contain it to a single sector after she withdrew the 8th Drop Legion without my permission. I now need to include the situation myself, without empathy and remorse.
An unexpected screech emanates above me as I slowly lose control of the ship's controls. The lights flicker until they completely cut out, creating darkness that fills the room. They must have cut the power again, and I wish I could figure out how. I know this isn't how I am meant to die; my visions never showed me this, and I have to escape.
With my hands raised, I can feel the elevator's electrical operating systems and metallic chassis surrounding me. Each inch of steel breathes to me as I slowly begin to apply pressure. Cracks slowly form, allowing light to creep in from the outside. An explosive energy bursts from inside me, throwing each of the walls away and smashing them outwards. An empty floor lies below as I fall slowly until I eventually catch myself.
A yellow and orange hue glows underneath me. Without lights, that could only be one thing. I slowly descend as the hue turns into fire. Thousands of little flames shine bright, illuminating the millions of people underneath. These people are interlocked among the tight street blocks moving along these tiny grids.
Around the edges of these crowds, a bright blue light flashes directly into the crowd, revealing the 8th Drop Legion in the darkness. They must have set up some backup batteries. It's time to find Caroline. Psychically, I connect to all the Legionnaires, sensing their fear, emotions, thoughts, and much more. Mainly, I search their minds for where the forward base will be. I believe I have found it. There are many Wind Guards on a particular corner, which Carlonie probably surrounded herself with.
Descending down suddenly behind the lines, I land among the shadows to not have been seen. Standing from behind, I can witness Caroline's leadership's organization; everybody is moving, and no one is standing still. Everyone wears a full uniform, but I can see many modifications and customizations, such as moving weapon holsters from hips to chest. Another factor in Caroline's Legion is how active all the officers are.
Squeezing through some debris, I approach the camp slowly. Ahead, I can see a small cover created by debris with Caroline underneath. Using my psychic powers, I push the guards away from noticing me as I approach the tent. Before I reached it, the Wind Guards around her suddenly turned around and saluted; they must have sensed me.
"Emperor Aurel!" Caroline shouts, catching the attention of all the soldiers like a hook to a fish. Every duty was immediately stopped as the entire 8th Drop Legion froze and fell to their knees.
"My power has seemed to have cut out." I smugly say.
This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.
"Yes, the rebels did that, and we know how."
"Care to share?"
"Lets maybe go somewhere else."
Caroline and I walk to an isolated tower along with the few Wind Guards by her.
"Why are you even here, Aurel? Why did you even appoint me as head of your personal guard if you don't even listen to my commands?" Caroline said with a determined anger expressed through her stern hand motions. The other Wind Guard wished to draw swords, but I held them mentally in place.
"Your prowess was enough for me." I said while thinking of the real reason she is here and what she will soon achieve.
"Now tell me what you intended to, Caroline."
"The power is out because of Vera. She is working with these rebels, and apparently, she has been using her power and influence."
It is revealed and begun.
"Why have we not destroyed them yet?" I ask, knowing Caroline would never order mass violence.
"I want to try non-lethal means first."
"We have waited too long, Caroline, and you even ordered the 8th Legion here against my orders. Things will now be in my hands."
Caroline nods in defeat.
"All forces, engage." Caroline says on her radio. Immediately, the cackles of gunfire and death can be heard.
I leave the room and immediately start to fly once more. Flashes let off as the crowds descend on the soldiers' lines. Wind Guards are cutting through with blades in hand, tearing a hole into the middle of the crowd. The battle rages until the people are surrounded in the middle of a capital building. Caroline, in the front of the building, signals me down.
Floating down, I land right next to her, seeing Vera cuffed. None of the soldiers looked pleased, and some were also put into cuffs. Vera's hair was now longer, and the boldness was gone. Her face has aged rapidly since I last saw her.
"Here comes the false God Aurel."
"So you turned traitor?"
"No, you turned traitor from your people!"
"You think so do you?"
Vera's eyes fill with anger as fire takes her over. I look towards the house that hosts the rest of the rebels. Putting my hand out, I grab it psychically. Vera and Caroline screamed for me to stop as the building began to crack, shudder, and eventually crushed. Thousands of screams let out, then suddenly ended as quickly as they started.
All faces are filled with grief from the tragedy that occurred.
"Take her away, I will deal with her later." The guards carry off Vera as I look around at the total destruction this battle caused. Bodies lay across the floor as blood flowed in the streets like a river.
It's time for me to leave. At least I know everything is about to end. I float away back to my room, it is probably time to talk to Rye once more.
