The consistent chattering of legionnaires was something one eventually grew accustomed to. Spending so much time in their vicinity, they eventually become nothing but background noise. Ambiance to fall asleep to. Not that there was any issue with that given how quiet things had gotten.
Looking over the wreckage of ships and blasters, the Light Binder offered a silent nod to the fallen. Weak as they were. In their sacrifice, they'd fuel the growth of the next cycle. Just as the previous had fueled theirs. Just as it always had been for as far back as the universe existed.
"Sir."
And as it would be when they finally fell.
"Sir."
However long that would take. The first god lived for centuries before he was killed. Perhaps he'd live a millennium or two.
"Sir!"
He finally came out of his thoughts.
"Hmm? Something to report Reginald?"
His second simply pointed into the sky, the Original Stem oozing with signals.
"We have new arrivals, sir."
He raised a brow.
As the liquid continued to part, a hunk of blue metal came flying through, its base devoid of any insignia as far as he could see. In fact, the shuttle was so plain-looking that he almost mistook it for a hover-taxi. The ship of a covert group, for sure.
Hmm. So, they're still sending people?
All things considered, it shouldn't have been a surprise. Call it sapient nature. When pushed into a corner, the universe would naturally buckle down into wild preservation efforts. Even a wild animal would try and fight-
The shuttle jerked, the whole thing crashing down in the middle of a field of legionnaires.
Back...
His thoughts fell away as he found himself staring at the sudden crash sight. Even Reginald could offer nothing more than a shrug.
"Dangit, Fox! You almost got us killed!"
The doors of the shuttle flew open, metal flying apart to crash into a nearby legionnaire. They'd taken interest in the new arrivals just as quickly as he did, but that action turned curiosity into instant hostility.
"Heh heh. My bad. Guess I got a little carried away."
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
The Light Binder listened to the newcomers through his amplifiers, multiple having been scattered across the battlefield for easy command issuing. He didn't recognize any of the voices. Nor did he recognize the people behind them, all of which came crawling out of the wrecked ship.
A canine with red fur dusted herself off, giving apologetic nods to both her companions. One of which was a much older human. The other...
Well, whaddya know.
He found a smile forming as he recognized the white wolf who came stepping out. The same gnat he'd always find trailing behind him no matter where he went. Who he'd assumed would be getting killed with that feline friend of hers, but evidently, that wasn't the case.
Lovers quarrel?
He scanned around but saw no signs of that curious panther anywhere. Or any other soldiers for that matter. It was just the three of them. The red canine cranned her neck to see, putting a hand over her head as she took in the Legionairre Realm. She seemed to jump when she spotted him and Reginald standing atop their monument. Her wolf friend seemed to notice at the same time.
"There you are!" the red one said before something appeared over her hands.
He couldn't help but raise a brow at that,
Graduates? Figured they'd all be guarding Earth. Or that useless capital.
The wolf summoned her rapier. Just in time, too, as the White Legion chose then to attack.
He nodded to Reginald, the man bowing and moving across their tower. Considering they had come to watch everything burn, his second had the foresight to keep the monument well-stocked in refreshments. He returned with a glass of tea, the Light Binder nodding in gratitude as he enjoyed the spectacle of it all.
There was screaming, but it was a lot less horror-tinged than before.
"Yo Light Binder!" the red canine was screaming as she dug a fist into the ground, launching multiple legionnaires into the air. And the dirt they stood on. Fascinating. He sipped his tea, as the canine kept screaming at them. "We're here to kick your tail in! Get down here so we can pound you!"
She created a wave with a footstep, dirt rising up to swallow a giant legionnaire whole. Something even a well-trained graduate would have had trouble doing.
He wasn't sure who the canine was. She was loud and brash for sure, but it was hard to deny she was cutting through his army with little effort. To the point that the wolf had time to glare at him as she let her friend play battering ram. The human simply trailed behind, only occasionally firing a shot.
"They're approaching close, sir," Reginald said.
"Yes, I can see that."
He waved for a refill, his second giving a bow and obeying,
"How far you think they'll get?" he asked sipping at his drink.
The red canine crashed to a halt.
"As far as the barrier, it would seem," Reginald said.
All three intruders came to a halt, the shimmering dome revealing itself a few seconds before disappearing again. The red canine knocked against it, wolf girl slashing it with her rapier to no effect. Not that it wasn't still entertaining to watch.
"Comet Man!"
He shook his now empty tea cup.
"Reginald."
"We're fresh out, sir."
The wolf slashed again and again to no avail, the red canine finally pulling her off and giving her a hard shake.
"Will you be alright if I get more, sir?" Reginald asked.
The Light Binder nodded, sitting back in his chair.
"I'll find a way to entertain myself somehow."
He clicked his tongue, to signal the White Legion. Considering the soldiers never got past the barrier, he doubted the three assailants would. So the least they could do was give him a good death showing.
