Prologue

In the bustling city of New Haven, Dr. James Cunningham toiled away in his state-of-the-art laboratory, where breakthroughs in nanotechnology were a daily occurrence. His experiments aimed to revolutionize medical science and cure ailments previously thought incurable.

One fateful day, while meticulously analyzing the data of his latest experiment, a rogue nanomachine with a malevolent agenda slipped past his security protocols. Unbeknownst to Dr. Cunningham, it made contact with his exposed skin, injecting a wicked concoction of corrupted code and viral substance.

Almost instantaneously, the doctor felt an unfamiliar sensation coursing through his veins. A fog settled over his mind as memories started slipping away, leaving him disoriented and uncertain.

Within seconds, the first symptoms began to manifest: bloodshot eyes, increased heart rate, and loss of consciousness. As the virus continued to spread, the doctor's body was taken over by primal instinct.

His once brilliant mind became clouded, his cognitive abilities diminished to almost nothing. A low, guttural growl escaped from his lips, signaling that the doctor's humanity had all but faded away.

Dr. James Cunningham's lab was now eerily quiet, save for the rhythmic beeping of his vital signs monitor. On the large display screen, a red warning light flashed steadily, reflecting the doctor's erratic pulse.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

As he lay prone on the floor, his eyes flickered open, revealing nothing but an empty, lifeless stare.

On the other side of the glass walls, the rest of the staff had already begun exhibiting the same symptoms, their humanity having been replaced by a ravenous hunger. They prowled around the lab, sniffing the air and growling in unison.

The first one to break free of its containment was a tall, slender man with dark brown hair. He immediately launched himself at his nearest colleague, sinking his teeth into her flesh. The woman let out a shrill cry of pain before succumbing to her injuries.

Soon, the entire lab was in chaos as the other infected employees turned on uninfected employees, their only goal to satiate their bloodlust and spread the virus. Bodies lay twitching on the floor, some missing limbs, others with gaping wounds in their chests but on the verge of reanimating.

The smell of blood hung heavy in the once peaceful laboratory, mixing with the pungent odor of decay and death.

As the last employee met their fate, the door to the lab burst open and a team of armed officers rushed in. They quickly assessed the situation and began taking down the infected employees with swift and efficient strikes.

It was clear that these officers had never dealt with this type of threat before, their movements imprecise and wary. But despite their best efforts, almost all of the infected escaped the lab and began spreading the virus throughout the city.

It was only a matter of time before the infection reached a critical level, threatening the very existence of New Haven if not the entire world.
