It didn’t take me long to find out where Tom and Lubac is held. [Mana Overseer: Mana Sonar] is really efficient. I don’t have a mini map on my HUD but [Mana Sonar] is the closest thing I have to a direction assistance. Of course, it wouldn’t be impossible for me to figure out which is which from all the points being reflected without Kai. I invoke the spell and he filter the results.
Still, it did took some time.
The moment I woke up from my evolution, I have felt the intrusion of miasma. This place is not spared of Aedrox’s influence. Although the traces are very faint. Without such sensitivity of Mana like I do, I doubt anyone could have felt it.
Being the [Arcane Analysis] he is, Kai concludes that the intrusion isn't a natural leak after doing a huge sweep of this place. Instead, it's the result of carriers, corrupted goblins. There could be other variables but Kai's range of sweep extended only till one fifth of this city.
Speaking of goblins, besides them, I find it odd that not even a single monster or beast resides here. In fact, I didn’t detect any living things here except for plants and the common bugs and insects, the right sizes.
It is truly a deserted city. A ruin.
I know I my attention should be on the things that actually matter but I can't help but be amazed by the architectures of this place, a fantasy nerd's wet dream. The designs are medieval but this place is filled with machines that seem to run on magic as fuel instead of electricity or steam. A glance from afar, this city looks superficially primitive but they are in actuality, a highly advanced civilization.
The city entrance gates possessed automatic functions if I go by the designs. The mechanisms resemble the auto gates' from my world. Of course, it has ceased to function the way it's suppose to be considering its last maintenance must be thousands of years ago.
Despite the advancement of this civilization, they used wood and steel instead of glass and marbles. Not that I’m complaining. I actually find the designs very much to my liking. A good balance of art of between modernization and traditionalism. A good way to embrace the advanced and traditional culture.
As I am lost in my admiration of such civilization, I stumbled absentmindedly upon on the entrance to a goblin’s lair. The only reason for me not getting lost or tripping at every stubs when my mind is elsewhere is solely thanks to Kai.
Before I advance any further, I hid behind a tree where it provides the best view of the vicinity around the lair's entrance. I saw two goblins coming out from the hut and another pair going in. They are switching shifts. Before any alarms are raised, I decide to quickly and quietly dispatch them.
Without a single sound, I move near them.
Hmm, my footsteps are lighter than before.
"Eeek?" Was all they can utter before falling prey to my tail, decapitating them in one fell swoop.
On closer inspection, my tail looks like it is fitted with a blade on the tip like some makeshift weapon. No qualms about it since it resembles the tail of an alien with acidic blood. It looks fucking dope if anything. I even stroke my tail and wipe off the blood after beheading the four goblins.
[Creep.]
Shut up, I like my tail.
Anyways, I wasn’t aware of the amount of goblins here but when we did another preliminary scan before descending the stairs hidden by a small straw hut, we discovered multiple life signs of monsters in the inner descend. They number to about fifty. Further analysis by Kai have led us to believe that these monsters are indeed goblins and they are all affected by Aedrox’s presence.
When we descended down the stairs and into a long corridor, we sort our plan of attack and rescue. Kai will be in charge of scouting and surveying while I will handle all the combat details.
[Keep your cool. Don't be impulsive.]
I know.
[I know you better than anyone else. I doubt you could keep your word when the situation calls for it.]
.... I wasn't aware that my subconscious has so little trust in me.
[What did you think happened all the time before? You were careless. You were ignorant. You jump into things before taking a good look. You leaped over gaps without any hesitation. Now, you can't do that. You're friends' lives are at stake here.]
Damn it, I know. It's.... it's easier said than done.
I look at my hands which still have intermittent tremors. No matter how hard I bury it, there would always be a little amount of fear that shows.
Deep breaths, Hyx. Deep breaths.
And why are we strutting slowly towards the place?
[I can detect magical traps from miles away but not physical traps. You seen those four, they are wearing leather armors. The goblins we fought don't. Which means these goblins possess a degree of intelligence that needs to be taken into consideration.]
I see your point but.... the traps.... aren't they already dismantled?
I said as I saw the disassembled traps laid on the floor.
[It could be Lubac or Tom.]
Well, whichever the two, it's impressive.
Then, screams and cries reverberated across the corridor.
My slow walking pace took off into a sprint upon hearing the urgent sounds.
[Master? Don't!]
I push Kai's warning out of my mind and rush ahead.
At the end of the corridor, it is an entrance to the lair but it is cut off by walls of fire. Through the blaze, I saw Tom being burned alive while Lubac....
....god damn it....
I was too late.
These fuckers have feed Lubac to the dogs....
[Master!]
Fuck! Fuck! I am too late....
[Hyx! Please calm down.]
I know! I know..... Lubac is.... Lubac is....
[Get use to it. This is such a world. A world where lives are little of value and it can be taken away at any moment’s notice. Stop being naive. The mourning can be done later. If we don’t act now, we will be mourning for two person.]
What? Two person?
[Tom is not dead yet. His Mana Vessel is still resting in the body. Focus on clearing the enemies. Orcs have an above average amount of life force compare to your normal goblins and Tom's a mage. He won't die that easily.]
Okay. Okay. I get it.
Deep breaths.
Shoving my naivety into a dark corner, I extinguished the flames in the doorway simply by exerting my pressuring aura.
[Mana Overseer (Unique): Daunt - Acquired]
I received this message in my head.
Really? Do you really need to preset that?
[I don’t see why not? It’s handy. It coerces, it terrifies, it extinguish flames literally and metaphorically. Why not?]
Hmm.... it does sounds very awesome when you put it that way. I guess it’s fine then.
With [Daunt] activated, I became the focus of the scene. All spotlights on me with the spotlights being the goblins’ gazes.
In my view, information of all the goblins appear. An appraisal skill. Neat. Well, I did appraise that himedere, Nilin after all.
Not much of the goblins in this room are noteworthy but three of them are. Two goblin variants and an ogre variant. These three has a grade higher than the average F among all the other goblins.
The tall goblin is a Hobgoblin. Rank D. Above average stats. One Arcane Art, [Zero Field (Unqiue)].
Hmm? [Zero Field]?
Okay then, show me what you got, appraisal.
Zero Field (Unique): Lv. 3
- A magic that creates a field which suppresses a certain amount of Mana in the vicinity.
I see. A magic nullifying spell. A magic that nulls other magic. I have to lookout for this.
The goblin in black robes is called a Shadow Goblin. Rank C. One Arcane Art, [Shadow Magic].
Shadow Magic: Lv. 4
- A magic that manipulates shadow to the user's will. A variant of dark magic.
Basically, an inferior version of [Abyss Magic] which also falls into the dark magic category.
And the ogre, it’s called a Red Ogre. He has one legacy Arcane Art, [Crimson Lord]. His rank is B. Higher than mine. There is no ECP since they are all considered as monsters and magic beasts but the Red Ogre has several titles,
[This will be good for measuring your strength. We could take it slow with them and we can see how reliable the information from the appraisals are but now is not the time for that. We have a bigger priority.]
Agreed. Tom's life comes first.
First, let’s get rid of the small fries. Before I finished my appraisals, the goblins have already geared up and begin surrounding me. They are positioning themselves. They are different.
When I transform only my right arm into a claw, the approaching goblins halt. My jittery right arm of a claw planted doubts in their mind, doubts of whether I’m some mere simple prey.
My mouth curls into a smile when I inspect my right arm. It wasn’t the black skin nor the thick claws that terrorized their mind but the realism of my right arm’s existence. I guess from other’s perspective, it does look intangible and resembles something like a mirage.
When I gaze back at the frightened goblins including the three big shots, Tom falls into my sight. He is looking back at me with eyes as terrified as the goblins. Even my allies are affected.
The fire that was searing through Tom’s flesh has died and left its victim exuding smoke from the charred flesh and skin. His status reads, Dire (Near-death).
[Master? Calm....]
I think Kai wanted to tell me to calm down but he was too late. Anger took over me for a second there after I saw the state Tom is in.
No. Not again.
I fire multiple [Abyssal Javelin] at the still stunned goblins. For those that were lucky or I simply missed, I turn them into skewers with [Hell Spike] augmented by [Overload]. The sudden death of more than half of their numbers caused a panic among them.
Even the three variants flinched from my performance but the Hobgoblin recovers from his shock faster than the two. He has a mischievous smile slowly forming on his face.
[Hyx! Calm yourself. This is no time to be rash. Please remember that the Red Ogre is a B rank. We don’t what it’s capable of. One wrong move might change the tide greatly. You should know this after spending a long time in the dungeon.]
I know. I’m alright. It’s just.... I need to let it out. But I’m alright now.
I think.
Hmm? I wonder why the ogre is shocked too? Aren’t you a higher rank than me? Shouldn’t you be able to do that much at least if you have a higher rank?
[Well, either the info of your ranking is defective or you are.]
This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
Considering everything I have been through and me being a very prominent figure that could bring great change to this world, it might be the latter.
As I prepared for another assault on them, a change in texts behind the Red Ogre caught my attention.
Without any gesture or a simple faint smile, Tom’s eyes lost its light and he fell to the floor like a doll cut of all its strings. I have thought he finally succumbed to his wound but from the status, he is just loosing his consciousness.
If I left him as such for any longer than necessary, he would surely die.
I gotta hurry.
Facing the three variants, tens of goblins, and racing against time to save my friend, I decide to use go all in.
[Awakening]
My skin turn as black as the night sky, purple veins spread to my body, my hands become claws, and I grow back out my tail.
The instance my metamorphosis completed, I did a full three sixty spin that sweep away the goblins closing in. Some are swatted away like flies but some met the sticky.... no, pointy end of my tail.
Four goblins left. The three variant aren't moving. They are observing.
The remaining four chose to run instead of fight but I'm not so benevolent to let them off.
[Abyss Magic: Devil's Garrote]
Thin pieces of string appeared from my fingertips. I crack the strings like a whip and bring them around a wide arc, bisecting the four goblins into two.
Cracking the strings, I swing them at the three variants.
As calm as he could, the Hobgoblin steps forward and splay his hand. A reading appears beside him as his Mana glowed in his hand.
[Zero Field]
The strings disappear when they hit an invisible wall. My deflected attack put a smile on the Hobgoblin's face.
It's the [Zero Field] shield. God, I hate him already.
[Be caution. The applications are more than a few.]
I know...
....
No.
No!
I shot out at them like a cannon.
[Master!?]
Kai's advice is already forgotten by me. It left my mind because I saw the state of Tom.
Status: Deceased
[Hyx! Calm yourself.]
The scream from Kai is nothing but a whisper to my enraged state.
The two have recovered from their shocks and their intimidating presence resumed but it doesn't affect me.
I aim for the Shadow Goblin first but he melted into his shadow. The information message reads; [Shadow Meld], a spell that lets the user to become one with its shadow.
Before I can grasp his next location, the Red Ogre attacked. I put [Plane Displacement] in time to block his punch clad in flames.
Surprising.
[Plane Displacement] cracks only a little from the punch. It has also gotten stronger along with my evolution.
A dark patch spawns behind me and out comes the Shadow Goblin. He has a pair of magic blades in his hands that resembles my [Abyssal Edge], [Shadow Blade]. Probably a weaker version.
I was wrong. Kinda.
Instead of slashing, the Shadow Goblin throws the blades at me.
Pointless, nevertheless.
My tail undulates and intercepts the blades. My tail's movement didn't stop there. As if dancing to a rhythm and tune, the pointed end darts at the Shadow Goblin but it missed. The Shadow Goblins has become one with his shadow again.
I clicked my tongue at his annoying technique.
[Hyx! Get out of there. It's an unfavorable position.]
I heard such words but none of it registered in my mind. My desire for vengeance has taken over me.
Right in front of me, the Red Ogre launches a large fireball at me.
[Crimson Lord: Great Flame Bomb]
I invoke [Psychokinesis] and launch the corpses of the fallen goblins at the gigantic ball of fire. I close and turn my eyes away from the explosion but I did not fall back. I brace against the after wave by planting my tail into floor.
When the waves subsided, I launch myself again at the Red Ogre.
This time, he uses an improved version of [Great Flame Bomb], [Quintuple Fire Crash]. Another name that reeks of chunni.
Sizes and numbers doesn't matter when I have the blue flame, [Mana Burn].
Bursting through the blue flames that ate the humongous fireball, I swing my [Sever]-clad claws at the Red Ogre, tearing open its flesh easily.
Right in the corner of my vision, the Hobgoblin stood in silence with a smirk.
[HYX! Get out of there!]
Finally, the voice of my head got through to me.
Instead of spurting blood, the Red Ogre's wound spits out flames.
As I am greeted with a wave of fire, the information texts of the Arcane Art come into my view.
Crimson Lord (Legacy): Lv. 5
Allows the user to become one with flames and able to utilize every possible fire magic. Grants fire immunity to the user. Title:
Crap.
Before the flames could swallow me, I feel my aura being emitted. I understand that Kai has activated [Daunt] for me. My thrilling aura suppresses the rising flames.
I did a flip and landed with both my feet. My right arm is burned but not badly.
[You fucking idiot! Calm yourself.] For the first time, Kai yells at me.
He's dead. He's dead, Kai.
[I know. He's dead but know this, your priority differs to mine.]
Kai....? What are you saying?
[You are my priority. You're health is my objective. Not Tom's, Not Cormac's, and not Bartholomew's. It's you. Don't forget that.]
How could you say that....?
[Hate me all you want but I will always put you first before everyone else.]
Kai's answer shouldn't have come as a surprise to me but I still am surprised.
[Plus, Tom's Mana Vessel is intact and have yet to leave his body. I can still save him but it won't be possible if you give in at your every impulse.]
I know.... but just.... shit.... Just shit.
[Master, listen. You have evolved and you are stronger now. Believe in yourself for once. You are basically a cheat in the eyes of everyone we came across. Even Aedrox complimented you and that says a lot. Have faith in that.]
I.... You're right. I'm sorry.
Calm down, me. Calm down. Everything will be alright. Kai's here. He's smart. He can make anything happen. He's a miracle.
[Um.... I did not say that.]
Feeling that my nerves are calm enough, I lock gaze with the Red Ogre but my sight wonders to his chest which I have drew a scar across. It's leaking flames instead of blood. Does this mean his internal are just pure flames?
Only one way to find out but I don't think it would come without me being smothered by his "blood".
"Well well well, what should we do? This boy killed all of our servants. Tsk tsk tsk. Ignorant heretics." Holding his nose high, the Hobgoblin said. "What do we do to the ones who are ignorant of the Great Cinder."
"We burn them. We burn the heretics." said the Shadow Goblin.
"Hmm.... I wonder. Do heretics deserve a quick death?"
How is burning someone alive a quick death? Did the corruption screwed with their brain too much?
"No." The Red Ogre sternly says. "Being reduced to ashes in a flick of fingers is far too merciful for the heathens. The great me has given them the honor of being graced in my presence yet, they trampled on that honor. Unacceptable. That calls for severe punishment."
Honor? Your presence? Another hopeless case. Snobbish, just like Aedrox.
"I see, Great Cinder. We can't allow such mercy now, can we?" agrees the Hobgoblin.
Something's wrong.
Mana is fluctuating around the Hobgoblin. With an imperious smile, he snaps his finger.
[Hyx! Get...]
And Kai is cut off mid-sentence.
I saw something with my Mana Vision for a second there but my Mana Vision deactivates for some reason. I invoke [Arcane Analysis] again but nothing happen. Even my HUD is gone.
Is this [Zero Field]?
Before I can grasp the situation, the Red Ogre charges straight at me with a dash and his fist raised. He's not using spells nor magics. Looks like [Zero Field] doesn't discriminate.
I splay my hands but I can't invoke [Plane Displacement].
Right, magic is nullified.
With no other options, I raise my arm in defense.
The Red Ogre's physical strength is greater than mine. My arm bent along with cracking sounds towards my face as his fist sink into it. My snapped bone protruded out of my flesh. A gruesome sight to behold which I turn away from. Using the Red Ogre's force, I push myself away from him.
When I landed, the Shadow Goblin takes his turn. His attacks lack strength but his speed is something worthy to be wary of. Although, he is nothing compared to Vira. I easily caught his arm in his flurry of attacks. I swing and slams him into the ground. Before I can deal the finishing blow, the Red Ogre ram his whole body into me, forcing me into a roll back away from them.
Although the Shadow Goblin lives, he is out of the fight. When I swung him, I have broken his arm and when I slammed him, his spine is dislocated. I see blood overflowing in his mouth and trickles down his cheeks.
The Red Ogre grimaced at the sight of his ally who is now rendered useless in the fight. Without any care to his own ally, he kicks him aside. I hear few more bones broke from that kick.
I doubt his flaring anger towards me is the result of me killing his men. He's just mad because I trampled on his pride. So easy to be provoke, pathetic.
.... Is this how it looks like? I have been giving into my impulses.
.... It's so uncool. God damn it.
Focus now, Hyx. One thing at a time.
Even without Kai, I can do this.
I snap my bones back into place and the auto regeneration takes over. High speed healing factor. Not a magic ability but a physical trait. Nice.
Now, who's next?
Well, obviously the Hobgoblin has to go first. Without my magic, I can't win against the Red Ogre.
Or can I?
"How pitiful. So weak without magic." With a wide grin, the Hobgoblin said.
It's hard to tell which one is the leader with the Hobgoblin conducting in such manner. I have thought the Hobgoblin is actually manipulating the Red Ogre with magic but that's not the case. The Red Ogre is just a muscle-brain.
Good thing [Zero Field] does not cancels out my [Awakening]. I wonder why.
Still, if Kai is here, maybe things wouldn't be so hard.
No. I can't keep relying on Kai or my magic. Situation like this could happen again and I might be up against a stronger opponent next time.
The Red Ogre once again come at me. I challenge him head-on but that is a ruse. I flip over him at the last second before we clash. I elbow him on the top of his spine. With the additional help of gravitational pull, my attack managed to drop his whole body to the floor. I'm not planning on killing him. I'm just incapacitating him for a mere moment. My aim is the Hobgoblin.
With the back of the Red Ogre as a foothold, I leap at the Hobgoblin. The Hobgoblin receives me with a smile.
My instincts shouted.
The Hobgoblin, fully compose, he tosses out a glowing yellowish white gemstone. The light is only getting stronger as it nears me.
Although I have never seen the ore before but judging from how the Hobgoblin turned away with his eyes closed, I can figure out what the gemstone is from his reactions. I curl up with my strangely flexible body as the gemstone explodes into a blinding flash.
I suppose flashbang is all the rage now.
When the lights faded, the Hobgoblin has created some distance from me.
My instincts sent a warning.
I spin and bisects a corpse flying at me, thrown by the Red Ogre. After throwing more corpses at my way but I cleanly slice all of it into pieces and finally, he deemed it futile with such tactics; he resorted back to his classic and impetuous charge at me.
I flipped over his swinging fist but I was caught by the tail
Oh, come on!
He did the same thing I did to the Shadow Goblin, he slams me into the ground. Unlike the Shadow Goblin, I'm not that frail. I bounce from the ground and swipe at his face. I missed his eyes but I got a slash across his nose. Fire spews out but not as much as his chest did.
His grip only tightened with that attack.
Shit.
He swings me again but he slams me into a pillar this time. I thought my spine would break from that but it didn't. I'm more sturdy than I look.
I reach out and grab one of the falling piece of rock from the air. I throw it right at the Red Ogre's face. He flinched from the rock but he didn't let go of my tail.
Tsk. Fine then.
Straightening my fingers, baring my claws, I cut off my tail with a one single swipe.
I then caught the surprised faces of the Hobgoblin and the Red Ogre.
I have only cut off the right at the point where the Red Ogre has a grip of, so I still have three fourth of my tail left. Blood is spurting out like gushing water.
The Red Ogre drops my severed tail and rushes at me.
I flail my tail at the Ogre, blinding his eyes with the blood spewing from the cut-end. I move low, twist my body, aim my claws, and with a single fluid motion of me spinning like a ballerina while sliding over the Red Ogre's blind jab, I dismember his right leg.
"Arrrgh!" The Red Ogre lets out a cry when he felt his limb got disconnected.
I coiled my tail at his left leg and pulled, ensuring his fall. He went face first into the floor and I make sure he stayed down by landing on top of him. Before he could even comprehend what just happened, I stick my fore fingers into both of his eyes.
Ouch. It burns my finger but I can take it.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!" He screams as loud as he could. He flails and struggles but I only plunge my fingers further in.
Closing in on one of his ear, I whisper "Not so tough are you know? Know your place, goblin." This is for Tom and Lubac.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!!!!!!!" He keeps screaming. I doubt he heard me but it doesn't matter. Before I can deal the finishing blow, I have a mild case of dejavu. My kill is interrupted by the Shadow Goblin who is suppose to be incapacitated. I leaped away from the Red Ogre to avoid four throwing knives.
"You insolent swine. How dare you laid a finger on the Great Cinder!?"
Swine? There are pigs in this world. Ha. Looking forward to some pork chop when I get out of here.
The Shadow Goblin wipes the blood from his lips and drops a glass vial he was holding.
Is that a potion?
Why do they have potions? Could they have made them? No. Not possible. They must have found it somewhere in this ruin.
The Shadow Goblin came at me with zig-zag hopping movements. Such template. He then leaps directly at me.
The lure in his movements are too obvious but I have no idea what kind of trap he has set up for me. Only one way to find out.
I spin and whip my tail at the plunging assailant. When my tail neared him, he pulls out a knife. Ah, I see. You knew I would do that so you planned to cut my tail off. I see.
But --
-- It's futile.
His knife met my tail but the thin carapace that covers my tail broke the blade. His eyes widened as the tail hit, cracking the air and send him crashing through two pillars. When he went sprawling across the floor, I see his organs splaying out. My tail's strength is too powerful for him.
I turn my eyes to the last standing goblin in the room. I strut towards him like I have all the time in the world.
It's funny. The way the Hobgoblin tripped as he step backwards, the way he crawls back pitifully from me, the way he looks with his eyes agape as wide as possible, it reminded me of the time when I just woken up in the cell and attacked by a Wight. Now, I'm doing the same thing to the Hobgoblin, taking my own sweet-ass time walking towards him.
"Curse you all! Fucking useless, every last one of you. Insolent." He drops his pompous act and screams and curses at everything. From his satchel bag, he took out another gemstone but it is of light blue color. He raises it overhead as the gemstone glowed brightly. Blue energy surrounds him and after a few swirls around him, the energy closes in on him and he disappears from my sight.
Huh.
A teleportation item. A magic item? But if it is, how could he have used it when his [Zero Field] was up? Does it not affect magic items?
Hm.... Well, I'll find out the reason sooner or later.
Now....
Kai, you there?
[Yes. I'm here.]
You may be my subconscious but you are still a product of magic. When magic nullification spell is used, we will be cut off.
[Yes, I'm aware. I will prepare the necessary precautions next time. If I'm given the chance to, that is.]
Yeah.... sorry.
[But at least, you managed to handle the situation yourself. I won't say perfect but you did great.]
Thanks. I was scare but.... knowing that I'll loose Tom if I don't persist on gave me the necessary push.
[Glad to see you have truly grown, Hyx.]
I did now, didn't I?
Now, what can you do about Tom?
[Hmm.... Well, in a short and simple brief, you will need to give a portion of your life to him.]
Say what?
[But first.....] Although Kai stops his words halfway, I understand what my subconscious is implying.
I look to the Red Ogre who is flailing and writhing in pain on the floor. He has lost his eyes and his right leg. Pathetic sight, this is.
His HP is only halfway down but he is already unable to fight anymore. His MP is also near depletion.
"Goblin." I said.
He stopped his squirming when he heard my voice. "You!! You will pay...." The words that were to follow are stuck on his throat. I put [Daunt] into full gear when I'm only a foot away from him.
He is now gasping for air in a very miserable manner.
With his title
His pathetic gasping stopped. He looks confused at my words.
I gather the scattered parts of the Shadow Goblin with [Psychokinesis]. In front of the Red Ogre's eyes, I stuff the flesh of his fallen comrade into my mouth.
He is now sweating so profusely that he is glistened with it.
"What about your own flesh? Have you tasted it? Aren't you ever curious? Well, don't be. Cuz I'll let you know once I have a taste. Don't worry, I will not leave even a tiny bit of you behind, goblin."
I said to him while the bits of his comrade's flesh dangles on the corners of my lips.
Cowering in fear and sobbing like a little girl all curled up, the shadows of black tendrils loomed over his, my fangs grew to the maximum extend, and I licked my lips with anticipation.
[Bon Appetit.]
