…My Dead Boyfriend.

…My Dead Boyfriend.

Sometimes it’s way easier to hide from ur shit then to admit that yes, you were that bitch.

-Twatter User UwUyourfat while apologizing for saying a racial slur.

Li had never actually thought it’d work. How could some golem thingy recreate a whole person? You’d need their soul, at least.

Any attempt would either be incomplete, or static.

Those were all very reasonable thoughts based on logic, all thrown out the window once he’d heard Jayce’s voice talk to Li.

It sounded like him. It had the same… tone, that smile in his voice when he was so sincerely happy.

It even smiled like him, and it didn’t have a fucking face.

***

The golem glowed a fluorescent blue, no features except a line for a mouth and empty imitations of eyes.

Then suddenly a light came to its eyes seconds after Li’d inserted the Memory Stick thing. It’s features had melted and reformed to match a dead man’s face, much as they’d done to form a height of 6’5.

He had read that saying height before inserting memories was good, as that detail was easily misinterpreted during the implant. Not his fault that Jayce is…

Li looked up at the blue figure, who smiled at Li. It was a smile made of some weird blue energy, but it was his…

***

How could he stay there, after it looked at him like that?

Worst of all, the insertion wasn’t nearly done. It supposedly took 2 weeks to fully internalize all the information. And if it could imitate his demeanor so soon and so easily…

Worse part? It wouldn’t stop talking.

”Li, please come out.”

Fat chance of that.

”I’m not trying to hurt you.”

And yet here they were.

”Please Lily, I just wanna talk”

The golem had learned Li’s nickname, it appeared. A very embarrassing one stemming from the fact Li had stuttered while introducing himself back when they first met, it had stuck ever since.

How remarkable, the rate of improvement was fascinating. To anyone not Li that is, it scared the crap out of him.

It made him wonder how long it’s be before that thing knew Li’s everything.

His favorite flower, his most ticklish spot, with Li’s luck, his favorite sex position is next.

The thing clearly wasn’t averse to abusing this information in some clunky attempt to get Li to talk to it.

”Look, come on back, we can get some food in our stomachs, and talk this all through… say… Pineapple pizza?”

Li gritted his teeth and tried not to tear up as the golem tried humor.

Jayce had betrayed the side of good pizza for a joke, and this thing now knew that too now.

It even laughed at it’s own terrible, stolen joke.

In his laugh, of course.

Then, silence.

Li should have welcomed it, but it kinda set his nerves up to 11. What could it be doing?

What if it could recreate his body, would it need his permission to do so? Li’s already inserted all his memories, maybe it didn’t need his approval anymore.

So Li waited in his bedroom, preparing for some abomination to knock down the door and… he didn’t know, probably some horror movie shit given how much this reminded him of some body snatching movie Jayce had forced him to watch.

So he waited.

and waited…

and waited……

and waited……………

Gosh this is boring, he’d rather get murdered at this point.

What was taking the golem so long?

Ok this is silly, I made this golem. It won’t hurt me…

“MavraCorp is not responsible for any deaths, injuries, or general destruction caused by Perfect Boyfriends.”

Probably. Probably won’t hurt me.

Did… it have his stats? If so Li would be dead, he had seen first hand what that strength and endurance could do to someone. One too many drunks had messed with the pair for him not to know.

A knife rest between his legs, the one that was always hidden in his nightstand.

Li played with his bracket as pulled up his status, the thing he usually ignored, it wasn’t as if it helped him at all.

Useless as ever. Until he got to 100 exp and leveled up he wouldn’t get any skills or stats, not like that was happening anytime soon.

Jayce had wanted to take him into the Wilds again, but there was never enough time…

And now… there was all the time in the world. No job, no school, no Jayce, nothing to occupy Li’s time.

Now Li had nothing.

“We’re going hunting!”

The tears fell defiantly, disregarding Li’s attempts to stay present and focused.

His breaths quickened and his throat tightened.

Li grit his teeth to keep in his sobs.

Why did he do this to himself? How arrogant he must be to have barely been hanging on and think he could handle Jayce’s clone.

Li smacked himself in the face to quell the incoming despair, it stung, but it cleared his frazzled mind.

He forced himself to open the door and walked with some rough approximation of stealth to the living room.

He didn’t dare to breathe as he peeked around the wall, catching sight of the golem still floating there.

However it seemed incredibly restless. It would likely pace if it had functional legs.

For 10 whole minutes it huffed, growing ever more restless each second.

After those very grumpy 10 minutes it finally shouted out, defeatedly.

”Look, it isn’t as if I don’t understand… I’m supposed to be dead, I AM dead. If me being here causes you this much suffering then please just turn off my GRA.”

Li gasped, walking out into the open to gape at the apparently suicidal golem.

The golem seemed surprised by Li’s sudden appearance but, as he had said, turned around and showed a button that had materialized on the back of his neck. His off switch?

”You… want to die?” Li asked, still shocked by the outburst.

”Not particularly, but I don’t want to see you in pain, I love you… Lily.” The golem admitted softly, turning his head to look back at his Operator with a sad smile.

Li had no idea how to respond to that. And at his silence, the golem added:

”P-plus, you can always just turn me on again! I’ll be fine!”

Jayce had shown that false cheer before, that tremor hauntingly familiar to Li. It was scared… He. He was scared.

But… this wasn’t Jayce.

Familiar sure, but not exact.

Jayce didn’t have an off switch, for example. He wasn’t an exact copy, wasn’t… Jayce.

It was like a different person?

The emotions were modeled after Jayce’s but they were different.

It wasn’t static. There was no memory to copy, this was a whole new experience… so it wasn’t a robot.

Li looked down at the knife in his hand, still gripped hard.

As the golem noticed it, he became somewhat nervous, as anyone would be with their back to a knife wielding, grief-ridden person.

”Do you have a name, golem?” It seemed rude not to ask after contemplating the golem’s murder.

”Jayce, I guess… unless you want something different?”

”I’m… not too sure, can’t you pick one?”

”Not really. All my thoughts and ideas are centered around what he would’ve wanted, and he liked his name.”

”Well for now, let’s just call you Gol.”

The golem burst out laughing, Li felt his ears redden at the sound.

”You were always terrible at names… Gol, it’s cute… for now.”

An awkward silence settled on the two.

”So are you gonna turn me off?” Gol asked after a minute of fidgeting.

”Nah, I need someone to cook and clean after all.” That caused Gol to laugh again, it was comforting… hearing it again now that Li’d calmed down. If he let himself forget for a fraction of a second, he could imagine it was Jayce’s.

“For legal reasons I must note that the Perfect Boyfriend Golem must be taught to clean and cook, and does not come with instinctive janitorial/culinary ability.” Gol quoted, a gleam of humor in his eyes that was so close to Jayce’s but also… wasn’t.

That caused Li to laugh, which made Gol laugh once more. It was that breathless kind which made you realize you weren’t sure the last time you had.

It lasted about a minute, only ending when Li had finally run out of breath. Gol didn’t seem to have that issue but was fine to stop when Li did.

Gol then smiled at Li, a half smile tinged with shyness that Jay hadn’t had since his high school graduation.

It didn’t feel as bad as Li had thought it would, it honestly felt nice to have proof that Gol wasn’t just Jayce in blue face paint.

Li flinched when Gol spoke up, forgetting what they had been doing in his thinking.

”Since we’re over all that… would you like to complete my transformation?”

”Lets.”
