I'm not a loner, I'm just picky

(Overleveled, huh?... That's perfectly in line with my style, I believe you'll bring me more than enough benefits, but now I have to understand what kind of abilities I have, and then I'll have to go look for appropriate adversaries to test my strength against.) Nihil said after hearing what the system had to say, though he was now more interested in understanding his abilities and standing in this new world.

Amid the crowd of people trying to figure out what to do next and or how to live with themselves in their current situation, Nihil didn't have time to pay attention to any of that and just decided to focus on what he can control.

(System, tell me what my skills can do.) Nihil commanded after reflecting on where to start for a few moments.

[Report. Host's skills have the following effects:

: You can change your form to match another individual of similar physical characteristics, but you will not inherit their abilities.

: You can see in darkness as well as see invisible creatures or objects as long as they are within your range of vision, not only that but you can also see through illusions, transformations(magical and non-magical), and even look at other planes of existence with enough training.

: Death is the only true fate of a mortal. Those that possess these eyes can see it whenever it gets too close and maybe even avoid it. Aside from that, with enough practice, you might be able to see 5 seconds into the future.

: A being that hungers over the omniverse, with this skill you might one day be able to consume it all. You will gain appropriate skills and even mutations upon consuming enough of something.

: A strong and heavy blow delivered with the chain, this skill helps the user adjust and use the proper movements to hit and deal the most damage.

: A skill that helps improve one's control and usage of the chain to a certain degree, the higher the level the better the correction and bonuses provided.] The system reported giving enough detail for an understanding of what each skill could do, but not enough to make it clear how to use and or improve the usage of such skills.

This had Nihil ponder on how he'll be using his skills from now on, though, other things intrigued him about his status, he had already decided that his priority, for now, was to familiarize himself with his powers and how to better make use of them. One example is his ability, in which the description said that it allowed him to turn into something similar to himself, did that mean he could only turn into humanoids? Or was it something broader like being able to turn into animals only? He didn't know for sure but was interested in finding out.

Though that too was not his main focus at the moment, since what he was the most interested in experimenting wasn't any of his skills, It was instead his knowledge he acquired from N.T.R. Online, could it be applied here in any way? his current focus being mana control and magic. Could he use magic? In the system of N.T.R. Online, only those with magic-related classes could use magic, while others could only use some elemental powers once they were strong enough, and even now, Nihil didn't have a magic class, since his class remained chain user and his sub-class Improvised-Fighter, but the status of Iruthra didn't seem to have the concept of classes, so it might be possible for him to still use magic.

Nihil took the basic meditation stance with his legs crossed and his hands joined as if for prayer. He calmed his breathing, taking in the air slowly before retaining it in for as long as he can before exhaling. This process was repeated multiple times without any regard for the commotion around him, and it was only possible for Nihil because he trained mediation not only inside the game but also outside in the real world for almost a year after his parents passed away, it was recommended by his therapist to stop him from distracting his mind with negative thoughts as well as help him stay calm.

Soon he was isolated from the world around him and completely focused on his thoughts, some would even say 'He's in his little world'. Once he felt that he was focused enough, Nihil began to mimic what was done In N.T.R. Online and spread his awareness to try and perceive the mana in the atmosphere, also known as the Manasphere, something that is present in all worlds that are part of the Omniverse's main system, the Akashic Records.

Being able to sense mana was the first step to mastering mana and spell casting.

Nihil keep his breathing steady and kept trying to sense the presence of mana, but was met with failure each time he tried.

(Why isn't it working? Am I doing something wrong? Or does this world not have magic? No, that can't be, if there wasn't magic the system wouldn't show it as an option, right?) Nihil was troubled by his continued failure and couldn't understand what he could be missing or doing incorrectly as at least from his perspective he had done everything properly.

He didn't allow this to discourage him though, he continued trying time after time, believing in the trial and error process, but unfortunately not seeing much success or improvement from it.

How much time passed as Nihil continued to try to perceive mana was unknown, not that it mattered to him how long he would have to be there, but his body certainly started feeling the tool of his actions and negligence bit by bit.

(Ok, let's go over the basics of what I know again. Mana is the most basic form of energy and allows me to manipulate and interrupt other forms of energy to create phenomena, natural and unnatural all the same, as long as I have enough of it and enough control over it. The other use of mana is simply directly converting it into other forms of energy at a higher cost of it.) He retold to himself what he knew about mana and its uses so that maybe he can figure out what was wrong with how he was trying to sense it.

{Wow, you have a pretty decent understanding of the basics of mana for someone who lived in a world without any. I'm almost proud, kiddo.} Lucius who had been silent for a suspicious amount of time finally decided to interject with some snarky commentary.

(You were so much more tolerable when you weren't saying anything. You might be onto something, you should try doing it more often.) Nihil responded similarly before focusing on training his mana again, he would rather ignore Lucius but it's quite hard to ignore something speaking directly to your mind.

{Ah, you should calm down, your inability to sense mana is only a product of your own lack of talent, as a genius, I'll never understand your struggles... No, I was more of a prodigy, so I pity you, dear Nihil.} Lucius said as he touched his chin and with a thoughtful expression on his face while he floated around Nihil.

Nihil understood that not minding Lucius was the best way to find internal peace, so he didn't say anything or respond in any way.

{I was going to ask, who thought you how to be a b*tch, but it's kind of obvious since the apple never falls far from the tree.}, Lucius casually remarked with a tone of indifference and a bit of his usual frivolousness and an expression to match.

Nihil immediately grabbed Lucius and pulled him very close before saying, "If ever again in your existence your dirty mouth opens to talk sh*t about my parents. I'll personally castrate you and find every bit of you in the Omniverse and then turn you into how you said "a b*tch", before letting the most disgusting beasts I can find have 'fun' with you, understood?!" The level of aggressivity with which Nihil threatened Lucius was something he didn't display even when this man tried to kill him.

{Look at you? I didn't know you could act like this, you almost made me worried that I accidentally turned you insane with a single line, but think positively pretty boy, can't you feel all the mana around you?} Lucius didn't seem pressed or worried in the least, despite Nihil's very apparent anger and willingness to act upon his words.

(What are you... How did I?) Nihil was about to disregard everything that Lucius was saying before he noticed a tingle and somewhat numbing feeling all over his body, that was to a degree comfortable but also itchy.

Looking around himself Nihil was already aware of the mana particles as he could see them due to his , but he wasn't sure they were mana particles until now.

{Now, that you've accomplished your tedious objective, I would rather not stay under the supervision of some Deities for longer than necessary, so I urge you to either finish this foolish test and become some 'Hero' or just kill yourself to wake up in Iruthra.} Lucius said pulling Nihil out of his current daze at finally confirming the existence of mana.

(I'll complete this, not necessarily because I want to be a 'Hero', but rather, I want to level up as much as possible while I'm here. Besides, I'm not done here yet, now that I've confirmed mana, I have to make sure of what I am capable of doing with it, and after that, I'll have to find some easy prey to satiate my hunger.) Nihil responded with no intentions of leaving until he feels he's gotten a good enough understanding of mana usage.

If you stumble upon this tale on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

{It's been 9 hours, Do you realize almost all the other mortals have already left with their parties(teams)? You might not find any prey by the time you decide to leave.} Lucius warned him.

(I have to admit, I didn't know it's been that long... I didn't expect to be most revered ever, but I expected at least one or two people would approach me to try and form a party with me.) Nihil was surprised he went completely uninterrupted for that long.

{How would they? No matter how loud they shouted you wouldn't move. Quite a lot of people tried to talk to you, some even tried to hit you, but it seems your constitution was strong enough to resist unscathed. Should I call you hardy boy?} Lucius was, well, being Lucius.

(if that's the case, why didn't you tell me earlier?) Nihil said in response while ignoring Lucius' question.

{What do you take me for? Your butler? If anything, you would be the servant, but I can't be bothered to hire someone at your level.} Lucius went back to making his comments.

Nihil went back to his training after ignoring Lucius again. Since he had confirmed that the whitish particles all around him were something akin to mana molecules, thus he decided to call them manacules(mana+molecules).

{That's a terrible name, just don't name ever again, you'll be doing the Omniverse as a whole a favor.} Lucius immediately commented on the name.

(I don't know, I think it works fine once you get used to it.) Nihil wasn't intending on stopping calling them manacules.

It didn't take very long for Nihil to figure out how to move and manipulate manacules to do what he wants since he could see their flow and from that understood how to best control them most efficiently.

[The skill has been acquired.]

(So, I can get skills through practice and understanding... It was fine in a game but isn't that a little broken for reality? Well, it doesn't matter as long as I can also benefit from it.) Nihil thought to himself before focusing his attention on training again.

This training continued for quite a while as Nihil adapted to how to flow his mana while moving which wasn't easy to maintain the focus and steady flow, especially when making abrupt movements, something that happens often during a battle.

After a few more hours of training, Nihil was sweating buckets but had a smile on his face as he looked at the purple floating screen in front of him.

[The skill has been acquired.]

[The skill has leveled up to ]

(Now, it's time for the real training to begin.) Nihil said with a still-present smile on his face.

{Are you addicted to training or something? You did it, you can manipulate mana on a very basic level, shouldn't you be happy and call it a day?} Lucius asked demonstrating genuine curiosity.

(Nope, I'll be in a world full of monsters after I leave this place, heck after I leave this cave room. So, I'll prepare with what I know will be helpful for now.)

{Oh really? And what would that be? more mana control?}

(Can you not be condescending that for 5 minutes? I'm sure it wouldn't kill you. Now, what I'll do next is pretty simple, I've heard in the game and read in many stories that you can use mana to strengthen your body and senses, so I'll do that.)

Not even noticing he had been there for a total of 14 hours now, Nihil went on with his training.

The process of strengthening his muscles asked for a lot of his stamina making him tire himself out quite quickly with each attempt, ending up on the floor sweaty and out of breath 2 hours later.

(Gosh, my muscles seem to have some kind of resistance to Manacules... Is it maybe due to my skill? What a pity... I guess I'll have to continue tomorrow. I'm surprisingly not hungry.) Nihil had a smile on his face despite being exhausted, training was like some kind of therapy for him, even though tired he would feel very alive after each training session.

To help himself recover, Nihil started meditating again, but now with better control and a bit more understanding over Manacules, he began accumulating them differently, this time to heal himself and rest.

[The skill has been acquired.]

While Nihil was meditating to recover his lost stamina and mana, some others hadn't left the cave room as well.

(AN: This / / will be used to signify that the main character doesn't understand the language being used.)

"/What is up with that guy? He was sitting in that position for hours, then started moving around really fast, and now he's back to sitting... Do you guys know what he's doing?/" A fat young man wearing glasses asked as he looked at Nihil's unusual behavior. This young man is one of the people who experienced being of a new race in this new life as he is now an elf, his name is Daisuke.

"/I don't know, but Ena sure does, since he made us wait here for this dude for hours! Man! Do you have any idea how many, pretty girls we could have made a party with though?! It's such a

waste!/" Another young man said this one being Isao, a Human on earth, now an Incubus in Iruthra.

"/Complaining is not going to help us, it is imperative that we stay here, you will later thank me for this. Also, I don't recommend your current behavior, it will lead to your suffering./" Ena another of the young man said, unlike the two before, he didn't experience being of a new race and stayed a human.

"/That still doesn't explain why you didn't let me talk to any of the cuties that were here! I'm an Incubus now, I'm handsome enough to get some, but you had to f*ck me over/." Isao wasn't convinced and continued complaining with a tone of displeasure and wrinkled forehead.

Ena didn't say anything in response, which only made Isao even more annoyed.

"/You little!-/" Isao was about to go on a rant when he was interrupted.

"/Stop! You don't need to fight over this, I'm sure Ena must have a reason... Also! Isao, what was that about all the cute girls leaving?!/" A young woman named Hayami said with an ominous smile and coarse tone of voice. Just like Isao and Daisuke, she was no longer human, it said in her status that she was something called a Proelia.

"/I regret nothing, I'm a man of the truth!/" Isao didn't back down despite Hayami's very intense aura.

Hayami pulled out a very sharp-looking kitchen knife before pointing it at Isao and saying, "/Let's see how far your honorable behavior gets you./"

"/Wait! Wait!! We can talk about this like!!-./" Before Isao could finish his plea Hayami had her knife on his neck and He fainted out of panic.

"/Hayami, you've gone a little too far, can exempt from doing that?/" Ena said calmly.

"/He was the one who called me ugly, it's his fault. I didn't even go that hard on him./" Hayami believed herself to be right, 'Not that I was planning on actually hurting him' she thinks to herself.

(/This girl is a psychopath, why did we have to team up with her?! Was there really nobody else who could speak Japanese to party with us?... Just what is Ena's plan?/) Daisuke who had just been watching thought to himself while shivers went down his spine thinking that he might be Hayami's next 'victim' with a single slip of the tongue.

-Later-

Nihil woke up from meditation feeling rather refreshed and ready to finally finish his training.

He began spending his mana onto all of his body to strengthen it as well as its 5 senses. The flow was steady and slow, not missing a spot. After some time he began to feel some pain in his muscles and internal organs, increasing the pressure and toll of maintaining the reinforcement process, but not willing to give up that easily, Nihil persisted and took the pain.

The intensity of things didn't go down and only escalated, all over his body waves of pain could be felt, it was as if multiple ants bite him continuously all over his body.

"Aarrghhh..." muffled groans of pain escaped Nihil's mouth as the pain grew stronger.

His muscles began to spasm making it harder to stay put and finish the process, but Nihil could only sit down and take it.

These efforts were proven to have served him, as once the pain and the spasms stopped, he felt amazing and almost anew, there were even a few changes on both his status. As we as the acquisition of two new skills.

Looking at both his status screens again, Nihil just could help but smile, 'this is going to be quite the journey', he thought to himself.

After closing the status screen, Nihil was met with a young man looking at him.

This young man was about 170cm tall, he had a white tall collared shirt under a black jacket and black pants on with brown shoes. Both his hair and eyes were black, his hair was short and a bit spiky on the lower end. He was rather slim with an average physique.

"Hello there, I'm sorry to interrupt your meditation, but it seems you're the last person here aside from us, so you might want to join our party, oh and by the way, I'm called Yozuro Ena." The black-haired young man said with a friendly smile.

Nihil looked at the young man and then looked around and saw three other young people behind him.

(It would be good to join a party while I'm still getting the basic understanding of where I stand and what I'm capable of doing, but I can't just group up with anyone, it would be useless if I got with a group of beginners and had to keep saving.) Nihil thought coming to his conclusion.

"I'm Nie-, no, I'm Nihil and I would rather not joining, I'm doing just fine by myself." Nihil refused not believing the people in front of him have much experience.

"So, you're the loner type, I understand you would prefer to be alone, but you might want to reconsider, there are actual monsters out there. Any of us could die if we are not careful." Ena insisted while reminding Nihil of what type of situation they are in, death being a very possible and even likely end for those not cautious and or strong enough.

"I appreciate your concerns, but I believe I'll be fine. I wish you luck in finding another member for your party, though." Nihil responded before getting up and starting to walk towards the door to finally leave the cave room.

"Lucius Omega!" Ena exclaimed loud and clear.

Nihil stopped and turn to look at Ena surprised to hear him say that name, even Lucius himself had a wide smile having heard his name.

"How do you know that name?" Nihil asked obviously curious.

"If you want to know more, I'll have to welcome you to our party." Ena smiled having gotten Nihil's attention.
