Chapter 1 - Hunting prey

"Ten years.", he thought. "Just ten years was all it took for all of this."

Michael Reed rubbed his eyes as he looked around. Trees. Trees everywhere. And all of it just because those idiots in the government did not listen to the scientists.

"You don't see the ramifications of doing nothing. We will lose voters," Michael mocked them in his head. "Damn right, you fucking idiots lost voters. You lost them because they fucking died. And they died miserably because of your stupid decision."

The tall and muscular man moved surprisingly nimble from one tree to another, trying to make no sound.

"Who could have foreseen that an invasive tree would overtake the fauna and mess up the whole ecosystem," he kept thinking, "Whatever. Stay focused Michael, you need to get some game."

In the beginning it was all good. More trees, better emmison. Even the temperature fell a few degrees. Everybody was happy, especially the ones who had fought for the climate. They even cheered and said it was a historical day when the first trees overtook cities. How right they would have been if there were still books containing the history since then.

He had been one of the lucky few when shit went down. Living in a small town in the middle of nowhere was a blessing in disguise. He had cursed his parents that he had to live there. No kids his age. No fast internet. There was not even a football club there. Only an archery club which he had joined to have something to do after school.

It quickly became his hobby and became pretty good at it.

His focus heightened to its peak as he spotted a group of deer. He cheered inwardly but did not let out a sound as he readied his bow. Aiming at his prey, he slowed down his breathing.

Five of the highly sought-after animals were in front of him in a clearing. He could eat well if he managed to hit one just right.

"You can do it. You can do it," he repeated in his mind.

Then he let the arrow go.

The arrow hit its mark, easily piercing the skin of the deer and getting stuck behind the shoulders of it. Michael was sure to have hit its lungs as the five deer scattered away.

It was only a matter of time when the deer would die and he needed to follow to ensure his kill.

After following the bloody trail left behind for a few minutes, Michael arrived at the side where the deer had died. Stepping on it, he pulled out the arrow. He was lucky as the arrow did not seem to be damaged and could be used again. Putting the arrow back into his quiver he sighed.

"I am sorry, but it is you or me. And if have the option - God, listen to me, I am apologizing to a fucking deer. ", Michael laughed to himself.

"Better get going, the smell of blood is already strong. I don't want to become food for the wolves. Or something worse."
