"Where... the fuck am I?"
Steve muttered under his breath as he stood in the middle of a grassy plain. Surveying his surroundings, he found dense forests surrounding the plains and a mountain ridge that almost enclosed the whole forest except for one side where an ocean can be spotted.
Steve was in the middle of nowhere and the last memory he had was the thunderous sound of lightning striking nearby and a white flash while he was in the middle of playing a game.
After remembering his last moments before blacking out and waking up to this strange place, Steve then made a crazy assumption.
"Don't tell me I got transported to a game world..."
He had read many web novels about these type of stories and he enjoyed reading them, as a matter of fact. But he would have never even thought something fictitious like transmigrating to a virtual world would ever happen to a normal person like him.
"Well, it's not entirely fiction. Remember that company that was developing a full-dive system back in 2023?" A voice in his head said as this voice tried to find logic in their freaky situation. This was Dexter, Steve's imaginary voice of reason. "Maybe they were trying to find test subjects and found out about you?"
"Yeah, which we don't have a relation with. I mean, this company is based in the US. We're on the otherside of the world and I didn't sign up for any sort of testing for that company. Plus, I'm nothing noteworthy. It's not like I'm a god of games or anything." Steve rebutted, trying to find another reason for their situation other than transmigration.
"Okay, while you nerds figure out how we got here, how about trying to progress with the story and do shit. It's not like trying to figure out how we got here will immediately bring us back to our world."
Another voice, different from the one before, said in an impatient tone. This was Darius, and was Steve's imaginary voice of instinct and 'gut-feeling'.
"Fair point." Steve shrugged as he agreed the what Darius said. It was true that no matter how long they think of how they got here, nothing good will happen to them as they stand idly. It was better to do something than doing nothing.
"Okay, since we got transmigrated while playing a game then logically speaking, based off of LitRPG stories Steve has read, this world should be based on the game that Steve was playing." [Dexter]
"And the game he was playing was..." [Darius]
"...Minecraft." [Steve]
"..." [Darius]
"What's with those reactions? It's not like Minecraft is a hard game. In fact, we're lucky if this world was based on Minecraft. Steve has been playing this game for 16 years and with mods even. We should be fine." [Dexter]
If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.
There was truth in Dexter's words. If this world was indeed based on Minecraft, then living in this new world should be easy.
"Emphasis on 'should'. After all, my body isn't blocky and this world isn't made out of cubes. Maybe this game isn't based on Minecraft at all." [Steve]
"You do have a point..." [Dexter]
"Anyways, just check if you have a GUI or something. It doesn't matter what game this world is based on. All games have interfaces. See if you could make one appear." [Darius]
Steve nodded in agreement and tried to think of ways how to make an interface window appear.
"You know... there's also a chance that we are not in a game world and we may not have a system like those MCs in the stories." [Dexter]
"Yeah? Then what's that floating window that's in front of Steve then?" [Darius]
"..." [Dexter]
In front of Steve was a blue holographic window. The window was made up of bunch of slots. On the lower half of the window was a grid 4 rows with 9 slots in each row. The upper part consisted of an image of Steve with slots corresponding to each of his limbs, and beside the image was a 2x2 grid and an arrow pointing towards an empty slot.
"..." [Dexter]
"..." [Darius]
"No matter how you look at it, it does look like the Inventory interface for Minecraft. It even has the crafting grid." [Steve]
"Well... there's one thing left to do to really solidify we're in a Minecraft world." [Dexter]
"And that is?" [Steve]
.....
"Do I really have to do this?"
Steve said as he stood in front of an oak tree.
"If this world really works like Minecraft, then punching a tree would get you a log." [Dexter]
"Yeah, but in the game when you punch wood you only get a block. How the hell am I suppose to get a block by punching this whole thing?!" [Steve]
"It never hurts to try." [Dexter]
"It probably will." [Darius]
"Thanks, Darius. Really reassuring." Steve said as he readied himself.
"Just think of it like your practicing your punches against a wood, like those MCs did at the beginning of those xianxia novels." [Dexter]
"Much better." [Steve]
He steeled his mind. It was now or never. If this worked... well, nothing major will really happen other than to prove a point. Nevertheless, he still had to do it.
'I wish I could make these two swap minds with me.'
Steve wound up his fist and let loose a powerful punch upon the trunk of the oak tree.
The tree shook from the force and leaves fell down above.
"Nothing's happening." [Dexter]
"Hahahahaha! You just punched a tree for nothing!" [Darius]
An indent appeared on the bark of the tree in the shape of a fist, and there was blood in it.
"It really fucking hurts, you jackass!" Steve groaned in pain as he held his bloodied fist to stop the bleeding. He then discovered that the wound was startin heal slowly.
"Well, at least health regen's a thing." [Dexter]
Summoning the Inventory window, Steve tried to check if a piece of wood was added to his Inventory. To his dismay, not even a single piece of bark was put in his storage slots.
"If punching wood doesn't do anything, what do we do now?" [Darius]
Steve bit on the tip of his thumb and walked back and forth repeatedly, a habit he does whenever he thinks. 'Think. Clearly we need a tool to chop down a tree. But we need oak logs to turn them into planks, then turn them into sticks to make a wooden tool.'
Just as he was thinking, he stepped on a twig that broke in half easily.
"..." [Steve]
Sticks!
He doesn't necessarily need to chop down oak tree to get sticks. He can easily get them from the environment!
"That makes sense." [Darius]
"Yeah. Why didn't we think of that?" [Dexter]
"Probably because you're a nerd that's to attached to game mechanics that you didn't think of other ways" [Darius]
"Yeah? Well why didn't you thought of it in the first place?" [Dexter]
"Huh? Why the hell would you expect me to think? I'm an idiot." [Darius]
"..." [Dexter]
"..." [Steve]
