“Damn this day has sucked to no freaking end.” Mumbling to himself as he opened the door to his apartment.
Michael’s day had gone from bad to worse and then ended in freaking stupid land before ending. First off as he left for work in the morning he lost his wallet on the subway. Of course, Michael was more than sure he had been pickpocketed so he had reported it to the police, along with taking the proper steps to secure his money with his bank.
Later in the day while working in his stupid nine to five job he found out that he was being let go because of financial circumstance the company was having.
At this point, Michael could not and would not even guess his day could get any worse, yet life loves to kick you when you’re down and so it did.
When he was returning home he received a call from his buddy that he had seen Michael’s girlfriend on a date with another guy. His buddy even sent him a photo as proof, needless to say in the mood he was in he had no patience or care left. Not even giving a second to think about it he called his girlfriend up and ended it.
Michael crumbled onto his sofa as he replayed the day’s events over and over in his head. Taking a gulp of the beer he grabbed on the way along with more gulps that followed. Quite a few beers later and Michael was out for the count.
In his drunken stupor, a dream of a world with monsters, hero’s and so much more took him on a fantastical trip.
…
A week had passed since that awful day and other than getting his new cards along with new identification. Not much else had changed, he was having no luck with finding a new job and was in no mood to find a new girl any time soon.
However, today was a different day for Michael today was the day anniversary of his great-grandmother’s passing. She had died five years ago due to old age, living to be a hundred and three was definitely an accomplishment in Michael’s book.
Michael loved his gran-gran a lot probably a bit more than his grandmother, his gran-gran had been a well-known writer in her youth. She had written amazing fantasy novels and they had been sold all across the world. Awards flowed her way constantly for her writing as it was hailed as simply magical to read no matter who read it.
Usually, on this day Michael would pick out a book his gran-gran had written and sit down and just read it in remembrance of her.
Though as he got up to find a book to read a thought popped in his mind or maybe it was more of a memory. The dream he had a week ago magically resurfaced and teased his thoughts with ideas, pausing in his stride to his bookshelf Michael had a wonderful idea.
Today he planned to try out writing in honor of his gran-gran, “maybe I have some of her talent.” Joked Michael as he found his laptop.
Though before he pulled up his word document a sensation passed through him, it called him to write his story on paper. At first, Michael planned to ignore the feeling because it was too much work to write on paper. But a new memory entered Michael’s head this was of the gift his gran-gran had given him on his birthday a month before she passed.

At first, Michael was sort of disappointed not because he did not like the gift but because it was just something plain. Usually, his gran-gran would give him amazing gifts but that years she had gave him a pen, it was sort of fancy for a pen sure but it was pen none the less.
Though as the thought of the black pen with golden markings on it played in his mind, a desire to write with it grew stronger.
After an hour of searching old boxes, Michael finally located the pen, looking at it once more Michael began to appreciate its beauty. Looking at it for a while he felt it was special in some way but shook off his thoughts before returning to his desk.
After pulling the pen out of the box Michael saw that there was a note hidden underneath the pen written on the note were just a few words that read, “To my greatest fan!”
Tears fell from Michael’s eyes as he read those simple words, he realized how stupid he was for not cherishing this gift.
Once he regained his composure Michael became more determined to write, with that determination he set off to create a story worthy of his gran-grans name.
Lost in the world he was creating Michael frantically wrote word after word, hours passed in chapters began to build upon the side of the desk.
With each new page, a slight glow from the pen grew brighter and brighter, drawing Michael into a trance that caused him to be lost in his writing.
Three days passed with little rest for Michael as he wrote like a mad man who had been hypnotized by a devil.
But today the last sentence was written and ended with a period, with a great sigh Michael leaned back in his chair drained of all his energy. Inside him though was excitement that dared to burst out his body at any moment.
He found that as he wrote the story a world so amazing that he could hardly imagine it was being created. Not only that but he was the author of this world, Michael even felt slightly that his story could even hold up against his gran-gran’s. Shaking his head of silly thoughts Michael went to set the pen he had held for days down. Yet to his surprise the pen was glowing bright and pulsating like as if it had a heart.
Before Michael could contemplate the weird situation, the pen lit up even brighter as the golden markings burned across the pen. Shielding his eyes from the harsh light Michael dropped the pen in fright, moments passed as he held his eyes closed. After what seemed like ages Michael opened his eyes carefully to check out the situation of the pen.
However, to his amazement when his eyes opened he realized he no longer cared about the light from the pen. No now he had bigger problems to deal with for he was not in his little apartment in front of a desk. Instead, he was standing on a hill that gave him a view he could never forget before him was a world that could only be described as beautiful.
In front of him was field that opened far into the distance, while off past it stood mountains that climbed high into the sky piercing the atmosphere.
Looking the other way Michael could see a river that snaked through a forest that was grander than any on Earth.
Near the river stood a city straight out of a fantasy story, though from the distance he was he could not make out to much detail.
Taking in a breath Michael checked his surroundings once more to find the pen, though instead of a pen he found a black sword with gold markings on it.
Grabbing the sword Michael felt a jolt run up his arm and through his body. Checking himself to ensure he was alright, Michael froze at what he discovered. His clothes had changed into leather armor and his body had developed muscles he never had.
Shocked at all the weird stuff happening Michael glanced at the sword in his hand and realized it had words engraved on its blade.
The words stunned Michael for a few moments.
“Enjoy the pen Michael let it take you to worlds not your own and adventurers you could only dream of. Love Gran-gran!”
That was the day Michael learned about the magical pen and his magical gran-gran! From that day on he fought against dragons, destroyed alien ships and cultivated to the point of immortality.
