Volume 1: [Masked Ruin] - Chapter 0: [Heads or Tails?]

To toss a coin.

To take action depending on the result.

Heads or tails?

From matters of life and death, to decisions of trivial worth, all constantly shifted in two mere ways by the hands of the above.

Since creation, how many choices have been made through such a faulty method?

How many fates have been sealed?

How many paths have been warped?

And how many minds have been toyed with?

Perhaps, not even all the stars meticulously arranged around the sky might be worthy competitors in abundance...

The possible catalysts from which the idea of granting the privilege of choice to such an insignificant form of existence - one who finds its only value through the use of the sapients as currency - are endless.

This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

From a moment of indecision that can only be aided by the hands of fate, to a time where a small hint of playfulness in one's mood might lead him to tempt destiny, to even junctures where feelings such as desperation or anticipation could perhaps lead one to make giant bets that could either revolutionize or destroy their whole existence.

And there are also some who would only tempt the universe merely to see if their own mind can be stimulated enough to find its own answer before the coin even falls.

Just like a small ignorant child, playing with fire because it shines more brightly than anything else they've ever seen.

And to me, to willingly toss a coin and act upon its verdict is...

One of the greatest humiliations that any sapient form of life might experience in its short, mostly uneventful journey towards death.

They, who are blessed upon birth with superior minds limited only by their mortal body...

They, who are all gifted with the ability to control their own path in all of its infinite ramifications...

They, who are, instead of acting upon themselves - treasuring their priceless privileges in doing so - making bet after bet, leaving their whole destiny to the invisible hands of fate...

Becoming no different than a falling leaf in autumn, leaving both its fall and destination to the casual whims of wind.

Despite being an existence clearly much, much greater than that.

And it's this personal opinion, this unique way of thought of mine, that made me - the one and only me - spare a glance at the unsightly brat currently standing on top of an unremarkable building.

It seems I might have found a way to ease my boredom for a while...

Well, at least until the time of "that" comes...
