First Step

I raise my head as I stand still in front of the black gate. “This is where I’ll be studying, huh?” I said in anticipation.

I take my phone out of my pockets and search up the timetable I received from my college profile. “So..I am in section 6? I guess that’s my class.” I figured. “It seems my first class is at level 4.”

Not wasting any time, I slip my phone back into my pockets and went into the college building. I look at the lift, which seems like it is going to consume a lot of time due to the number of students waiting for it. Sighing, I reluctantly take the stairs to level 4.

Level 4 is filled with classrooms and lecture rooms, which is twice the size of classrooms. A few minutes of walking around, I arrive in front of a room. CR4, the writings on the board states. “If I’m right, this should be my class..right?” I said as I take a quick glance on my phone for confirmation.

As I enter the room, I notice that the room is a little smaller than the class we have for high school. Probably due to the class having less than 30 students instead of school, where it can be as high as 45 students at once.

Anyways, a quick count of the heads in the class resulted in 16, including me. Looks like there are still some who aren’t still here. Probably because of the lift is taking too long or due to the class starting in another 10 minutes.

I find myself a seat at the second row because it is the most comfortable row to be at. Easy to focus in class and no pressure from sitting in front of the lecturer.

After putting my bag down, I take a good look around the class. It seems there are a balance between boys and girls in this class. At least, excluding the ones that are still not yet in the class. There are 7 boys, including me, and 9 girls.

“It seems everyone still haven’t interacted with each other.” I thought. Except for a few, the others are staying silent while playing with their phones, doing their stuff or have no one to talk with due to sitting alone.

Oh well. Better ready up my mental state before the class starts. After all, “I have been nervous in anticipation for a while now..” I whispered quietly as I raised my right hand to my chest in attempt to make myself feel relaxed.

10 minutes flashed by quickly. The class with earlier had only 16 students now holds 27 students. Now the class have 12 boys and 15 girls. Props to me for keeping count.

If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

The lecturer is now at the front, putting down her files on her desk. She took a blue marker from her pencil box and stood in front of the whiteboard.

“Good morning, class. My name is Julia Manson. You should refer me as Ms Julia. Understood?” the lecturer, Ms Julia, said.

“Understood.” Some students in the class replied.

“So, since this is my first class with your section of the semester, I am supposed to only brief you of what you will be assessed and also what this subject consists of.” Ms Julia took off the cap of her marker. “So in this class, you will learn of..” She starts to write the assessments and marks for each assessment as she briefs us the subject.

“This class should be pretty easy for you to score as long as you do the assignments and pay attention in class for final exam. You get all that?” Ms Julia asks, to which the class nods.

“Done with the briefing, now let us start with something that you guys love so much.” Ms Julia clapped her hands. She smirked as she says, “Lets do an ice breaking session.”

There it is. Ice breaking session. One of people’s most dreaded activity due to having no idea how to present oneself. Unable to boast oneself too much nor be too humble. And if you are unable to impress the others in the room, you pretty much would be flagged as someone uninteresting or even worse, a creep.

I sneakily glance at the others near to me. Based on their facial expression, it seems they also do not like this activity. Too bad, it seems this lecturer likes to see people feel awkward judging by her smirk that is still hung on her face.

“Let’s start off with the one at the back. Starting with the boy at the far right.” She pointed her fingers at the back.

“Eh..Uh..My name is Kevin. 18. Male. Single. My preferences for a girlfriend are-“

“I said it’s an ice breaking session. Not promote yourself to find a girlfriend.” Ms Julia facepalms as the class laugh. “Just tell a little about yourself, your hobby and something unique or fun fact about you.”

“Ah..Alright. Again, my name is Kevin. I am 18 like most of you. For my hobby, I like to play video games. A fun fact about me..probably that I am able to do calculations quickly.” The boy introduces himself.

“Oh? You can calculate fast? Then what is 7042x137?” Ms Julia smirks.

“638185.” The boy replied nonchalantly.

“What the..Wait..Let me get a calculator.” Ms Julia took out her phone and opens the calculator on her phone. “The answer is 964754. Your answer isn’t even close.”

“But it was quick, no?” The boy snickers.

The whole class laughed. Ms Julia shakes her head as the starts to choose another prey. Soon enough, my turn came.

“My name is John. I am also 18. My hobby is that I like to read novels and do sports. Well, about something unique about me, I like to have a smile on my face.” I endured my nervousness as I introduce myself.

“No wonder you had been smiling since I came in. You sure you don’t have a medical condition there?” Ms Julia remarked.

“No, Ms. I just can’t help but be enchanted by your beauty.” I replied with a smile.

“Complimenting won’t get you extra marks, John. Still, I will take the compliment.” Ms Julia said with a laugh. “Next, you over there.”

This continues on for another 10 minutes until everyone had a turn. Still, it seems the ice breaking session was not that good for me. Because..

Wasn’t my intro too cheesy..?
