Chapter 4: Adam's Decision

Under the moonlight, the atmosphere was cold. Adam, who was lying on the ground, shivered and sat up.

Next to him, he saw the corpse of the tree man, Satoshi.

"Urghh..." Although he didn't feel like vomiting or guilty, seeing a corpse right next to him made him feel strange.

Standing up, he thought about searching the corpse for anything valuable, but seeing that there didn't seem to be anything, he gave up on the idea.

Seeing his current state, especially the clothes he was wearing, Adam started to undress right there.

In just his underwear, he took a towel from his inventory. After cleaning himself and changing clothes, putting everything back into his inventory, he sighed as he looked once more at the large body of the tree man and made a decision.

'If it works, it works,' he thought.

Grabbing the corpse by the trunk, he opened the inventory and dragged it inside, making the open holographic page look like a dimensional door, passing the large body of the tree man, soon storing it in one of the empty inventory slots.

'It really worked...' Adam murmured in his mind, impressed.

'Wait...'

It was only at this moment that he looked more closely at the occupied slots in the inventory and noticed two new items and a value of 50,000 yen added to his money meter.

'Where did this come from?' Not expecting this, obviously, he thought that only he would have access, so he didn't expect items to magically appear in his inventory. Adam took these two items out of the inventory.

It was a book and a leaf. So far, it didn't seem like anything special.

He used 'Observe' first on the leaf.

━━━━

[Leaf of Life]

[A rare leaf born from a tree man. A leaf that regenerates HP and MP and also serves as an ingredient in alchemy.]

[Effect: +50 HP and +20 MP.]

━━━━

When he saw this, the previous question from yesterday came back, and his question was answered. 'I didn't expect to get something as a drop by killing the tree man. Even the money and the book must have appeared because of that.'

It was incredible but easy to accept, considering everything that happened to him. Then, he turned his attention to the book, but before he used 'Observe,' something happened.

━━━━

[You have obtained the skill book: [Basic Healing]]

[Would you like to learn the skill?]

[Confirm]-[Deny]

━━━━

"A skill book?" He murmured, asking rhetorically, "And, moreover, one with healing power?"

'Besides, can I simply learn this skill just by acquiring a skill book?' His heart beat faster. Whether because it was a healing skill, something that would make him feel much safer; even if it was described as a basic healing skill.

He clicked 'Confirm.'

"Vrrr!"

The screen shook, emitting a sound resembling a bell, and soon a message overlaid the holographic skill learning screen in red.

━━━━

[You cannot learn this skill. Prerequisite to learn: 10 INT and 8 WIS]

━━━━

Seeing this, Adam pondered for just a moment.

Sincerely, he wished to increase his VIT. The fact that he had almost died just now due to having so little life made him reflect on this. Of course, having high health wasn't everything; he wanted to maintain a balance with a good amount of MP to use his skills.

However, if he learned a healing skill, his chances of staying alive would also be greater...

Stopping his hesitation, he made his decision.

Attributes:

STR: 8 ◄(+0)►

VIT: 6 ◄(+0)►

Clicking 'Confirm'. The 10 points he gained upon leveling up were automatically integrated into his attributes.

Then, he went to the page that asked for confirmation to learn the skill: [Basic Healing] and confirmed.

In an instant, the book was transformed into particles of light.

'Ohh, so that's how it works.' He thought as a new holographic page appeared before him.

━━━━

[You obtained the skill: [Basic Healing]]

━━━━

[[Basic Healing](Active) Lv1 EXP: 0.0% / 10MP]

One of the basic healing skills using MP (you need to touch the target directly to use this skill).

Effect: Heals up to 10 HP.

Effect: The amount of healing increases with each level.

Effect: The duration of the healing increases with each level.

Additional cost: 15 MP per minute while the healing is active (maximum of 10 minutes of active use at this level) and can heal up to 20 HP per minute.

━━━━

MP:[160/160]

Each point placed in WIS increased MP by 5, and each point in INT increased MP by 10.

He thought: 'With my current MP, I should be able to heal 210 HP with this healing skill.'

Of course, this healing value would be the best-case scenario; reality might not be as kind due to various factors. For instance, healing from poisoning or something similar. He still didn't know how much he could heal in different situations, such as the loss of an arm...

If he used this skill, could it reconstruct a lost limb?

Despite his curiosity about the extent of this healing skill's capabilities, he wasn't willing to cut off a finger just to test it.

For now, he could only speculate while waiting to discover more in the future.

One of his speculations was: 'If I level up this skill, is there a chance that it will become useful enough to compare with a superior healing skill?'

In the end, it all depended on whether there was a limit to this skill. If the limit was high, he felt that his speculation might come true in the near future, but if there were level limitations, then...

Well, he could only lament and try to get a better healing skill at that point.

As his thoughts ran wild, he arrived at the convenience store.

The sound of a bell rang the moment he passed through the door.

"Good evening, dear customer."

The receptionist spoke to him as soon as he saw Adam enter.

Adam simply nodded before heading to the meat section with a basket on his arm. He picked up two kilograms of beef strips, soy sauce, sugar, mirin, various vegetables, tofu, and shirataki.

Besides that, he also grabbed other things that were missing from his house.

At the checkout, he took out a 10,000 yen note and handed it over.

The cashier checked if the note was genuine with a friendly smile. After confirming, he gathered Adam's change, put the note away, and said, "Here's your change. Have a good night and come back soon."

"Mm." Adam nodded.

Taking the bags, Adam began to leave.

Only when he exited did he sigh: 'So, it really is a genuine note...'

Honestly, his heart raced as he watched the cashier verify the note to see if it was real or fake...

'If I continue to make money by killing monsters/villains...' He thought: 'I won't need to work as a waiter anymore.'

Of course, even if he didn't earn money by killing monsters, he would still think of another way to make money. Despite almost dying, he still felt incredibly calm while thinking about what to do next.

"Clank, clank, clank!"

As he climbed the apartment stairs, the sound of the steps echoed with each step.

Holding all the bags with one hand, he knocked on Saitama's door.

"Coming!"

Saitama's voice echoed shortly after.

It didn't take long for him to open the door with a bored expression, dressed casually in a white sweatshirt with 'oppai' written in yellow letters on the front and blue sweatpants.

"Oh, it's you again, Adam." Saitama asked, "So, what do you want with me?"

"Mm, I bought ingredients and plan to make Sukiyaki. I wanted to invite you to thank you for giving me those things." Adam replied with a friendly smile.

"Sukiyaki?" Saitama gulped: "You didn't need to thank me for that..." He wrapped his arm around Adam's neck, closing the door behind him, almost dragging Adam towards his apartment: "But since you went through the trouble of inviting me, I'll gladly accept."

"Haha, it's good to hear that." Adam, who was dragged by a colossal force, simply went along until he was released at his door.

"Oh, right." Saitama took the bags from his hand: "They must be heavy, let me carry them for you."

Even if he refused, Saitama had already taken the bags from his hand.

Smiling wryly, Adam took the key and opened the door.

"Oh, it's not much different from my place." As he entered with him, Saitama looked around and added while standing by the kitchen sink: "Can I leave the things here?"

"Yes, I'll start preparing." Adam said, "You can wait in the living room, watch TV or something, make yourself at home."

"Okay." Saitama said casually, going to the table, sitting down relaxedly, grabbing the remote, and turning on the TV.

While Adam was busy in the small kitchen, Saitama's laughter echoed a few times as he slapped the table.

'He really feels at home.' Adam thought.
