[Growth Weaving has reached Level 2]
“NYEEEEHEHEHE!”
My roar is that of the tumultuous ocean, my opponent completely submerged within my prodigious mass. “Let’s see how you like this!”
Finally able to use the Skill for its intended purpose, I roil my body and twist my currents in such a way that Vine-demort can’t swim through me, a task already made difficult by their tubular physiology. Whoof, those Regenerative Molecules really take it outta you, huh? Seems like that energy I draw on for Slam- ‘endurance’, I believe -also powers my Regen. So many Slams followed up by my new big gun have left my currents a little thready, like I just ran a block.
Of course, to make matters even more interesting, this bastard ain’t no normal snake. In demonstration of this fact its body begins to unravel into two, three, four collections of vines which each attempt to reach straight through me for the ground below. Vine-demort was already thick with Growth Aspected mana before, but now the quantity and direction of it surges, the vines growing so fast I’m having trouble holding them back.
“Oh no you don’t!”
Two seconds have already passed, my weave rapidly chewing through its oomph. I’ve been working on digesting the monster from the very moment I could but I’ll never finish before I shrink, so I need to find a way to make this count!
My former field-medic self leaping back into me, I add another sixteen HP to my mass, the bubble inside {Mask} swimming around in circles.
“{MASK}! Shoot me!”
The little slime glimmers happily. “Okay!” Pushing themselves up to the surface only takes another second- damn, I’m really getting slapped in the face with repeated reasons to invest in my Motive Molecules after this -their currents already gathering up and coating me in a protective membrane shell. Despite not seeing it, we know when they reach the surface because their leading edge spills out of the ground like a muffin, my little bubble arcing through the air a moment later to reintegrate with my main body.
Now, with all three of me here…
“How do you fancy a game of Twister: God Mode?” I spark, my slimelight a sharp current of electrifying, vindictive glee.
Spacing the three conceptual bubbles of my selves evenly along the vine serpent’s length, I compress myself down with all my might-
The first few inches of the snake’s reaching vines, almost to the edges of my membrane, are crushed instantly. The rest of the monster is bunched up in my core as a messy, oozing tangle of plant fibres, its impotent struggles about as impactful as a kid flailing around in a hessian sack. Woah, why am I strong?! This isn’t nearly as hard as I thought it would be…
Oh, duh! My Compressive membrane increases my physical traits as my mass increases. The weave increased my overall mass, so it buffed my Physicality and Fortitude! “Damn, that’s…”
Wait, I don’t have time for this!
Bloomping into the ground for a little added width, I set each of my selves to twisting in a different direction, pinching down on the three points in between like I’m separating dough.
I can feel the resistive tension in the snake monster’s vines as I attempt to twist it apart but the density of my mass and my increased strength simply outmatch its own.
RRRIIIIPP!
[Malleable has reached Level 2]
Gathering myself for one final trio of twists, my flex splits the monster in three; head, midsection, and tail each now clasped within their own self-contained, slimey prisons.
Pushing my molecules to digest as fast as possible, the monster’s flailing nonetheless begins to gain some traction in my trio of now smaller- and therefore two-thirds weaker -bodies. Fuck, that’s a problem, I can’t let it escape!
My centre bubble flattening out, the me on the right with the head inside goes first. “Kawabunga!” I holler as I leap onto my improvised jump pad and propel myself into the air, already glowing with the power of a Slam. Said centre bubble follows my own example by jumping off the already flattened bubble to the left containing the tail, also glowing with the power of a Slam.
[Bounce has reached Level 5]
[Bounce has achieved max level. Advance Skill to-?]
“Uuugh, so tiiired,” I glow, my membrane dull as a wave of aching lethargy rolls over me. “No, come on Luke! You’ve worked doubles after a night shift, you can tank some lousy exhaustion!” Redirecting my focus onto the monster before me, I start moving in a spin cycle around my quarry to get my currents flowing again. I keep up the motion, the wiggling head inside my body picking up speed.
Just as I’m about to hit the ground I go soft, peeling my body away from the spot where the monster’s head is going to make contact-
-only to re-compress all that mass as a pseudopod and bring it down on top of the monster’s head like a sledgehammer a moment later.
I refer to this comparison impacting a watermelon in regards to the effect.
The sound of pulping plant matter vibrates through the clearing a second time as my bubble containing the serpent’s centre mass hits the ground in much the same way. My two selves puddling to the floor in gelatinous heaps to try and recover some energy, I wait a moment for the soundless ‘ding’ of a System notification.
Aaaand no dice.
“Weeeeegh! Bah, guess we both got with the same program. I gotta finish the whole thing.” Groaning, I force my membrane to re-establish itself properly despite my lack of ‘get up and go’.
The monster’s tail still writhing away inside my last bubble, it’s gotten so close to escaping- but then the rest of me arrive to pool my HP back to max. And not a moment too soon, because a full eight seconds after it was first cast my weave swirls its last, my excess mass unravelling and spiralling off into a cloud of nothingness. Thankfully, expanding to my true size still leaves me big enough to keep the third-of-a-snake trapped inside with little to no fuss, my currents fighting against it while I slowly strip it down. It can’t do anything to hurt me like this without a mouth or any way to break my membrane, but I still feel the metaphorical burn that says this workout isn’t over yet.
“Y’know, this is actually pretty similar to what I remember of getting dunked by some the bigger waves I’ve had unfortunate experiences with…” Thinking back to those dizzying moments trapped underwater, I try rolling the severed noodle tail like a log rolling down a hill, or like I’m spinning a teatowel into a deadly weapon.
[Engulf has reached Level 4]
[Engulf has reached Level 5]
[Engulf has achieved max level.]
Woah! I haven’t seen you in a while Engulf, not since… wow, that big Hyena that tried to attack {Mask}. Damn, guess it must have been close levelling up anyway. The change is immediate; where my currents were battling with the last vestiges of my opponent’s strength before, now it can’t muster the leverage for even that. “Yeah, it sucks getting rolled, huh? Usually you’d just wait it out, but seeing as I’m the one in charge…”
[Congratulations, you have defeated a Level 6 Vine Serpent]
[You have received XP]
[You have reached Level 2]
[You have gained 1 Skill Point]
[You have consumed 3 Impurities]
[Organism detected. [Initial]Profile: Vine Serpent unlocked.]
“…this ride ain’t stopping any time soon,” I shimmer just under ten seconds later before collapsing into an undefined lump of wiggling slime matter.
----------------------------------------
“Luke okay! Defeat Predator!”
{Mask}, bounding out from their hole in the ground while I attempt to recuperate from running myself into it, leaps into my pool of fluctuating mass, swimming their way through me excitedly in a far more effective manner than I’ve ever exhibited. I’d pay closer attention to their technique but I’m rather distracted by how deeply tired I am, as well as how my new body interacts with lounging back; namely, by how all over the place my mass is. Parts of me are condensing only to loosen again a moment later as my instinct to relax and rest war with my body’s natural inclination to compress.
The result is that I look like a constantly surging patch of ocean, full of swells and dips and layered currents all folding over and around each other. It’s chaotic, distracting even, but in the way white noise is; I’m drawn into it, my focus drifting through the nonsense while somehow growing calmer for it-
“Luke big! Fun, play in!”
That is, I would be if I didn’t have a little tyke skating through me having a grand old time.
Not that I mind, I’m glad they’re having fun! The movement inside me isn’t as disturbing as I would have guessed, their small body slipping through my slime matter with comfortable ease. In fact there’s a distinctly satisfying quality to the sensation, one I don’t have a human-relevant analogue for. It’s just nice, tracts of my slime matter filled with a formless warmth in the wake of {Mask}’s passage.
I see why slimes often carry other slimes inside their body now. I could get used to this.
Rested enough that I’m confident I’m not about to destabilise any time soon, I pull myself together, spinning {Mask} at what would probably be dizzying speeds for most anyone besides us. “You bet your gelatinous booty I beat that boob! And not only that; I got so many Skill level ups!” Glimmering, my satisfaction at the victory is matched only by my excitement at what comes next. “Now, I’m gonna drag those two pieces over to our hidey holes for some chow time!”
Splitting myself in two, I gather up every scrap of the monster’s splattered head and mid-section that I can find- a task made trivial by the fact that I can only see its body parts, {Mask} and myself in all this Nothing -and in the process of doing so, make a wonderous discovery.
I flash. “{Mask}! This thing had a Mana Heart!” Making contact with a familiar object nestled amongst the vines, {Mask} shimmers in cheery celebration. Huh, it looks like the vines are actually growing out of it. How peculiar.
[Mana Heart detected. Convert to evolutionary mass?]
No way! This is {Mask}’s ticket to a Pure Heart to match the more intrinsic one they were born with! Away with you, foul snake; your words are poison!
Dragging everything back is surprisingly easy, given my recently improved Physicality. I don’t even need to subsume and float everything back, simply pulling the head across the ground and laying it on top of my little pal’s hiding spot. Once that’s done, I reintegrate my selves and project a knife made of slime long enough to slice through the midsection. I already ate the tail, so it’s only fair they get the head and we split the rest. Solidifying my improvised blade, I cut down…
...and only barely get past the tough ‘skin’. Hm.
The knife is sturdy, it’s not bending or anything, I just can’t make shapes with a fine enough edge to cut quite as effectively as I’d like.
“I’m really gonna need to ask {Mask} to teach me how to Mould,” I glow to myself. I swear, if I’ve wasted all that evolutionary mass on a dud, I’m gonna be very upset at the deceptive pricing scale of those Structures. “Here you go mate, eat up!”
“Thanking Luke! Will eat. Then Heart,” the little slime asserts, already plastered to the side of the head above them.
I bob, starting in on the rest of my meal. Finishing well ahead of them due to my far more advanced digestion, I net a cool three more Impurities, landing me firmly in the Richie Rich club.
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
[Impurities: 18]
Eighteen! Eighteen Impurities! Look at me go David, I’m raking ‘em in! And as such!
[Mutate Motive Molecules to +5, consuming 12 Impurities?]
[Upon mutating Motive Molecules to +5, you must choose an adaptation. This will modify the Mutation's traits.]
No way will I ever allow a fight like that to happen ever again! I’ve been happy with my native speed up to this point but that’s because I’ve been ambushing my opponents or sticking to them in places they can’t retaliate. After learning it’s possible for monsters to move that fast? I can’t rely on those tactics to protect me anymore; I need something to grease my many molecular wheels!
[Dextrous - Improves fine motor skills]
[Slippery - Your molecules gain friction resistant properties, making your mass slippery and free flowing]
[…]
[Athletic - Improves the amount of motive force your molecules can generate]
[…]
[…]
[Fluid - Your form becomes more fluid]
[…]
As to what kind of adaptation I want… I haven’t got a clue. Flicking down the expansive list, I tut. Once again, waaaaay too many options for something to stand out immediately.
[…]
[Rapid - Improves the speed of quick, short motions]
[Crushing - Improves the crushing force your molecules can exert]
[…]
[Sticky - Your molecules become sticky, bonding to most things they come into contact with]
[…]
Ooo, that’s cool! I could go with Crushing and squeeze things till they kick the bucket! Feels somewhat poetic, seeing this option after fighting a snake. Sticky is interesting, but I think also a little too effective. I don’t want to be bonding to everything as I wander around, or even when I’m grabbing onto whatever I’m fighting; I upgraded my Motive Molcs so I’d be able to move better, not hold onto things better.
Which would make Slippery a solid contender, if I wasn’t keenly aware of the possible drawbacks in being unable to hold onto things.
Oi, you know exactly what’s happening here Luke. Unless I want to commit to a specific style of motion I’ve really got to stop staring at all these fancy Adaptations! I’m far better off sticking to the bread-and-butter type options at this early stage, not least of all because I’ve run myself into way too many dead-end builds over the years trying to overthink the early game in various RPGs. K.I.S.S., we must remember our friend K.I.S.S.!
[...]
[Charged - Motive Molecules can be charged with various mana Aspects to a variety of minor results]
[Sculpted - Improves your molecules’ ability to form precise structures and shapes]
[Rigid - Enables your molecules to lock together, creating rigid structures. The durability of interlocking molecules scales off a combination of your Physicality and Fortitude]
[…]
Oh, but what have we here? Looks like my little moving parts govern more than just how I crawl around. Charged sounds like it has potential once I learn more about the different Aspects of mana. For now I’m kind of restricted to the Foundational Aspects, but I at least know there are a bunch of more element-leaning variants. I wonder what pumping water or wind into my molecular feet would do? Then we have Sculpted-
OH, that might fix my present difficulty with making myself sharp!
Hmmm, better not though. If Mould works out I can hop that hurdle for free, so I’ll hold off. Speaking of, hey! There’s {Mask}’s Rigid Adaptation!
Scrolling through the list, I’m presented with more upon more esoteric or outright outlandish options. Fluid up the top could change my form into more of a liquid, or I could take Loose and essentially turn myself into a moving puddle!
…
Why would I ever do that?
I can increase different aspects of my movement like acceleration or how quickly I can change direction, or even empower myself with specific types of mana like Charged, but I’m restricted to one and the effect is stronger. There are even some that cost endurance or mana to activate which seem pretty strong, like being able to temporarily change how my molecules behave. But I was already touching on the limits of my capacity in this fight; I think I’ll hold off on anything that drains me like that for a little bit.
Maybe a third of the way down the list, I pause, my eye catching on a concise little entry that sets my currents awhirling. “No, no! Don’t give in!” Straining against the absurd perfection of this Adaptation I’m eyeing off, I force myself to keep scrolling, giving in only a couple more times to flick back up and stare before I’m finished.
[Bouncy - Enhances the natural elastic bond between your molecules]
[You have chosen an adaptation: Bouncy]
As was inevitable, my self-control proves meaningless. Nothing calls to me louder or more clearly than one of the most intrinsic of slime qualities, our bounce! How can I say no to being even jigglier? How, I ask you!? Also, my soft stretchiness is a big part of what makes me so durable; making myself even more elastic than I already am will likely allow me to tank some truly impressive hits, if I’m using that Vine Serpent’s tail attack as a metric.
The notification disappears and-
WOOOHOOO! Damn, a jump in Mutations like that has got some zing to it!
But, we’re not finished yet, oh no! I’ve still got six Impurities left!
- Mutations -
Mana Receptors +5 (Dispersed)
Digestive Molecules +5 (Indifferent)
Motive Molecules +5 (Bouncy)
Membrane +2 (Compressive)
Regenerative Molecules
Solidifying Enzyme
Jumping back into my Mutations menu, I uhm and ahh before choosing to put three resources each into my Regenerative Molecules and Solidifying Enzyme, bringing them both up to +2.
[Regenerative Molecules +2 - Your molecules have the capability to regenerate each other, recuperating your mass over a short duration.]
[Solidifying Enzyme +2 - An enzyme within your body that remains passive until activated, affects a chemical reaction which solidifies exposed molecules. The structural integrity of the resultant solid slime matter scales off of your Fortitude. You possess a limited quantity of Solidifying Enzyme, which your body naturally generates over time.]
I’m happy with my membrane as it is for now, I stood up well against a monster that could attack me freely, and I should hopefully be getting a buff to my durability anyway with the new Bouncy molecules. As for my other two Mutations already at +5, I don’t want to fall into the same trap that left one aspect of my capabilities down in the dirt by focusing all my resources into only one or two. I needed to rush my Mana Receptors so I could see effectively, which I’m well on my way to, but I really should have spread out my Impurities across my Mutations rather than going hard on digestion.
It was useful at the time, but I very nearly died for it here. I need to avoid that in future.
Finally tapped out on Impurities, I look to my Skills. I must have been approaching a tipping point; I’ve only gotten a couple of Skill notifications since {Mask} and I began our journey here and now they’ve all come rolling in at once. Slam, Growth Weaving and Malleable all hit level two, while Bounce and Engulf both hit max! I can’t help it Mr Attenborough, I’m all abubble!
Still, despite being maxed at Level 5, Engulf doesn’t give me the option to advance it into anything else. That’s the first time that’s happened but I guess I shouldn’t expect everything to work exactly the same. It’s throwing me for a bit of a loop though, seeing as I figured out a better way of applying the Skill than what it taught me; you’d think there would be more to it in that case… but I guess not. A maxed Skill is still nice to have, even though I’m beginning to question if it was worth spending a Skill Point on…
Ah, who am I kidding. Engulf was doing work in my early days! I think. Hard to say, seeing as I was never really big enough to use it as intended, but it certainly helped me latch onto things! I’ll choose to be positive about it.
Bounce however, now that’s a name I haven’t seen in a long time. So long in fact that I can’t even remember the last time it levelled up! I wonder why that is? It’s not like I haven’t been hopping about… though, I guess hopping isn’t quite the same as bouncing, and I haven’t been applying it as much in combat with Slam in my arsenal and {Mask} to help me up here…
A thundering cloud of realisation rolls over me. “I’ve been neglecting my jiggle! What kind of slime am I?!”
Here I was, unable to pass up a chance at elevating my slimiest qualities, when I’ve been more focused on hunting monsters and magic than I have bouncing about with a zest for life! Well, never again! Come on Bounce, what’ve you got for me?
[Bounce has achieved max level. Advance Skill to [Bounce II] by spending 2 Skill Points?]
…ah.
Noooo, you’re taking me for all I have! I swear I feel a physical pain in my Heart at the decision I’m faced with. After all that talk am I really going to fold to the pressure and pass on every slimes’ birthright?
…..
“Let’s take another look at those Skills,” I grumble, my membrane painted in splotchy, desaturated bursts.
- Available Skills -
[Bounce II - 2 SP: Further assists with co-ordinating the skill-holder’s mass, and provides insight into the path and trajectory of bouncing motion
Grip II - 2 SP: Assists with technique and fine motor skills required to maintain the skill-holder's grasp on surfaces, objects and other entities.
Swimming - 1 SP: Imparts basic knowledge on techniques suited to the skill-holder's physique for the purpose of traversing liquid environments.
Division - 1 SP: Enables the skill-holder to split off a piece of their consciousness, which may then operate independently of the skill-holder. Maintaining the skill requires a degree of continuous concentration.
Tandem Consciousness II - 2 SP: Improves the skill-holder's Tandem Consciousness' capability to collaborate. Minor improvement to the ratio which determines how many consciousness' the skill-holder can maintain relative to Thought.
Chaos Weaving - 1 SP: Imparts knowledge on how to weave Chaos Aspected mana.
Matter Weaving - 1 SP: Imparts knowledge on how to weave Matter Aspected mana.
Null Weaving - 1 SP: Imparts knowledge on how to weave Null Aspected mana.
Intuitive Weaver - 1 SP: Your understanding of the nature of mana is not bound by conventional wisdom. Imparts knowledge on the nature of Foundational Aspects and gently refines attempts to interact with mana when following your intuition.
Tension - 1 SP: The skill-holder can empower the tension held across their body. Effects vary dependent upon physiology.
Writ Initiate - 1 SP: Grants the skill-holder basic System Writ permissions.
Slime Shot - 1 SP: Imparts knowledge on the basic techniques and bodily control required to eject projectiles from the skill-holder's body.]
Wow, look at all those Skills! And I can only have two of them!
…
This sucks!
“Come on Luke, it’s really not that bad,” a part of me tells myself. “Let’s do what we always do; make a shortlist and go with what’s interesting and fun.”
Yeah, I know. It’s just annoying. I want them all, but-
“Well then, let’s cut anything we think we can learn from the other slimes off the list!” I suggest. “That will narrow the choices down and I’ll have material to help me learn how to learn Skills, which is gonna be awesome!”
Wobbling slightly, my spirits lift from their temporary slump. I have been looking forward to figuring that out and it makes sense that the more Skills I can see the descriptions of the easier it should be to learn them.
“Alright, let’s do this!”
[Division - 1 SP: Enables the skill-holder to split off a piece of their consciousness, which may then operate independently of the skill-holder.
Imparts perspective on the nature of Foundational Aspects and gently refines attempts to interact with mana when following your intuition.
Writ Initiate - 1 SP: Grants the skill-holder basic System Writ permissions.
A minute later, I’m pretty sure I’ve narrowed down the list of options I’m willing to spend a Skill Point on right now. All the others are things I either think or know I can learn from my new compatriots. Passing on Tension was a hard choice but I think it’ll be an even more valuable learning opportunity. I want to know whether or not Skills that use resources like endurance can even be learned the way others can, and if they can’t it’s not like it’s going anywhere. I’m not about to stop levelling up, so I can always just buy it if picking it up for free is a bust.
“Now! What to pick, what to pick…” The list can be broken down into two parts, plus Writ Initiate. In fact…
[You have successfully purchased Skill: Writ Initiate]
I’ve ruminated on this long enough. I keep coming back to how interesting yet unknown this Skill is, so I’m going to pick it up eventually; I may as well do that now. Who knows, maybe I can learn more about the Nothing by interacting with the System in some way?
I’ve still got more choices to make so I’m about to allocate one of my selves to the task of familiarising me with my new knowledge, but I’m pleased to discover there’s a kind of ‘hold’ in place on the new Skill; looks like if I’m still in my menus I can postpone receiving any braindumps until I’m done. That’s super convenient Mr Attenborough, you’re so right! I don’t wanna be distracted while making such important decisions.
“So, one SP left,” I wibble. I’m split between improving my minds or my weaving. The main difference here is that, according to the System, I have zero Skills actually interacting with my consciousness’. I don’t know what the benefits and drawbacks are of leaving a Skill like what I assume is Tandem Consciousness ‘unofficial’, as it were. “Let’s walk this through. Skills teach me things, either instincts or otherwise. Also, a bunch of my first Skills talked about helping me co-ordinate or ‘manage’ my movements.
“On the other hand, they seem to level up way faster when I do things a different way to how I’m taught. Soooo, they’re kind of like training wheels?” No, that doesn’t seem right. Using Pound a bunch eventually let me turn it into Slam, so maybe it’s better to think of Skills like… like employment? You start at the bottom, work hard, maybe skip a couple positions up if you’re really good at it, then just keep climbing and learning how to do more of the job and do it better? That’s also a neat little explanation for how related Skills pop up; they’re like similar or related jobs you get to learn because the jobs you started with cross into a bunch of different fields.
Or, at least, that’s how the concept of employment was presented to me by the company I fried chips and served customers for.
In which case, I shouldn’t think of Skills as ‘unlocking’ something new I can do. “They’re more like those training manuals we were required to fill out once or twice a year, or those online courses we had to complete because someone cooked their finger in the fry oil accidentally. Poor Casey.”
Most of the stuff I can learn right now is almost certainly entry level info or, in the case of my split self, something I can figure out on my own. So what’s the metric? What am I using to weight my decision in either direction?
My mass spirals slowly through me, a river of thought carried on steady, looping paths. This… is hard. I’m usually fine making decisions if given enough time to get fed up, but I have, like, zero context and this stuff is really interesting to think about! How am I supposed to choose between learning more about doing a thing I somehow did to myself, or basic knowledge on how a magic system I don’t understand works?!
…
“Oh, well when I put it like that.” Glimmering, I happily drop Division and T.C. II from the running. I’m not about to run into a kindly witch or warlock willing to while the hours away waxing on about the wonders of weaving any time soon. On the other hand, I can always try self-reflection or retracing the steps that resulted in my new and improved mental state if I want to learn more about that. “Why get the System to tell me about my own mind when I can get it to tell me about how the world around me works instead!”
Which leaves me to decide between Chaos, Matter or Null Weaving, or this new one, Intuitive Weaver. Honestly, taking into account the arguments I made to myself to get to this point, I think the last is the obvious option.
Intuitive Weaver - 1 SP: Your understanding of the nature of mana is not bound by conventional wisdom. Imparts perspective on the nature of Foundational Aspects and gently refines attempts to interact with mana when following your intuition.
The Weaving Skills will almost certainly be like the Growth one I picked up; they’ll give me a better understanding and control over that particular Aspect plus one or two new weave patterns all ready to go. Conversely, this will teach me more about all the Foundations and the System will help nudge me in the right direction while I keep doing what I’ve been doing this whole time; making this shit up as I go. Also, I can’t lie that the little tidbit at the start about my knowledge ‘not being bound by conventional wisdom’ is intensely gratifying. I’m a slime! We aren’t conventional in the least!
[You have successfully purchased Skill: Intuitive Weaver]
“And with that done, let the online training commence!”
At least this time the estimated time to complete isn’t ‘half an hour if I completed the pre-readings.’
